We need the ability to form in-game clans

It's not like I'm against the idea, as I'd enjoy the game regardless. But I definitely don't think that the game needs it. It needs it for a certain type of player, perhaps.

I played the game back in 1984. And even though I'm not into modern social media (eg facebooks etc), back then my neigbour and I used to put our PC next to one another MSX and C64 version to get a feel of multiplay together. This is what's happening now and it's great.

Tbh every feature added is a richness for someone in the community, hence for the game in general.

It's more a question of priorities (due to limited resources). Right now they're adding chained missions (much requested by many) and planetary landings (very immersive). FD tries to find balance in releasing content. We should all await "our turn" and maybe sometime (indeed maybe in years) the OP will get the outpost building.

For me personally I would like to have group-list (much like friends list) showing all players in green on hud (like wingmembers in blue). Would be very practical and make game less annoying for me, without in any way bothering someone else (unless misantropes who want to pester me :) )

But there's so much still to add in the game!

Just never say never, but be patient. Rome wasn't built in a day.

EVE Online. That's I think.

That has nothing to do with EVE.

Right now people can make player defined subfactions. Also NPC's belong to these subfactions.

So by logic, players should be able to alos "join" subfactions. which then by the fact that players can generate these subfactions do exactly have the purpose of "clans".

So why should Elite not just have a common label for a community of players?

And the outpost idea, well it's a general "economy" and player driven feature that Elite needs because the current elite Universe feels too static.

Some in game group mechanics should be implemented in ED. DB said that it will come however not the way other games do it. So we just have to wait and see.

Like I said: misantropy.

This game can cater to all. No need for any player profile to block features that could make others happy and support the game. Except if it's to troll due to misantropy.
eg. I don't like CQC/POwerPLay - but some people do. So no reason to oppose it.

You don't want an outpost, but the OP does want to build one in one of the 400billion systems? No problem: both can be catered to and made happy, unless you are only happy when the OP doesn't get his toys (=misantropy).

First of all, it's misanthropy, not "misantropy". If you're going to use that word so much, at least learn how to spell it.

Secondly, that word does not mean what you think it means.

Thirdly, the problem with clans is that players who aren't interested in joining one will inevitably have their game affected by them. CQC and Powerplay aren't comparable, as both can be safely ignored if they aren't your cup of tea (the former has zero effect on the regular game world; the latter has an utterly negligible effect). If clans were imposed on us, a huge proportion (perhaps the majority) of the user base would leave, as previous posts suggest. Thankfully that's not going to happen.

I guess I'd have no problem with a separate mode for clan enthusiasts such as yourself - though not if it required major developer time/resources to implement.

Not because I'm "afraid" of the idea, or a "misanthrope" (what an utterly ridiculous thing to say!), but because I want to continue playing the game I (and DB!) want to play, not the game some teenaged basement-dwelling clan leader wants me to play.

So I am ridiculous? You prove my point. No need to be so defensive you can play the game how you want.
I don't understand why people in this community are so hostile and tbh it seems mostly to be the solo players who are so negative towards other people.

Mr I speak 5 languages, maybe not so fine as you.
Thanks for your negativism.

People have discussed this to death and it has ended up nowhere.

My money is that "clans" (or whatever you want to call them) will inevitably end up in the game, under what guise FD wants to dress them in is yet to be known, but it will happen and many people won't like it.

They already exist, if you see me flying around you will see CMDR My Name [XX].
We are also a minor faction.
I think we are also guinea pigs in this case.

The only missing part is automatically making people friends when they join, and removing them when they leave (if you want to).

Clan leaders have to maintain that list, new people joining have to manually add all those people to their list. Major pita with 150 or so names right now, and growing.

So Clan mechanics are slowly coming into game by the back door... the usual kind of back door tweaking of the game which Frontier is famous for. ;)

And I'd very much like you to have this functionality, even though I won't be using it.

It could have to do with the fact you're attributing misanthropy to those who have a different opinion.

It could also be generalising a diverse group like solo players as being more negative towards other people.

Just in case anyone is toting up those for and those against - I'm against.

I'm against making this game into some other game that's already out there. That's like making a movie where the ex-military guy has had his relative kidnapped and the police can't do anything so he sets out to do the rescue himself; but there's a twist . . . . .

- a bit like this thread, then . . . . .

I'm not a solo player. And do you classify all people who disagree with you as "negative towards other people"?

Well, negativity.

All we need IMO, is simply better tools for existing player groups.

I run a small "friends-of-friends" group and it's rather annoying that I have to be online to accept join requests.
Thankfully, it's rare that I get new members, but I can only imagine what it's like for the larger player groups.

How will the people be inevitably affected by them? The galaxy has 400 billion systems with solo play as an option at all times?

You don't need to join a group at all, so can be as easily avoided as CQC. You don't like to play in a group with others? Don't do it.

As you can see sourced here btw, I don't need an "h" in my language to spell the word, hence my error. But I have learned now.

Here the English meaning: Misanthropy is the general hatred, distrust or contempt of the human species or human nature.

The groups (or clans as you are referring to them) are already in the game. It would objectively disadvantage no one to add features ingame to help those players out.

Seriously, please stop being so sour people.

You can already add one by deleting your commander and starting again with a CMDR BobSmith UBERLOLS, for example. Not committed enough to restart? Then I suggest you're not committed enough to the whole idea. :D

Problem with that is there are people doing it and adding groups they are not a part of, then hacking to make said groups look bad.

It could also be generalising a diverse group like solo players as being more negative towards other people.

Maybe you misunderstood.

To be very precise and not generalising:
In this context I consider people who object other's people requests, for the sole reason of denying them those requests out of distrust, as misantHropes.

(pardon my English ;-) )

Why should I (and others) have to scuttle off to Solo/vacate the bubble just so that a minority of players can enjoy a game that most of us don't want to play? (Thankfully, as mentioned, this isn't going to happen, so this whole discussion is moot!)

*Laughs* My apologies - I didn't realise we were speaking Dutch!

Again, not being "sour", or "negative". Just expressing an opinion that's different from yours.

I bolded the part where you make the assumption. And you seem very determined to hang on to it, so I won't even start to argue against it. I know my reasons, and I know they're not the reason you stated. That is sufficient for me.

But when you state sentiments like: "tbh it seems mostly to be the solo players who are so negative towards other people.", you are prejudiced.

For everyone thinking this would disadvantage 'solo players'... well it wouldn't.
It would only add to the game without giving anyone any particular unfair advantage.

I'm not talking about researching weapons to be placed on ships that players can use. Only defense weapons for their base. (which would act the same way defense weapons on spaceports do).
Plus, trying to build your bases would act like a private community goal, and the only reward would be to see your base grow....nothing more.

Braben already said that trying to shoot down onto a planet from outer orbit will be impossible. Even trying to shoot players on a planet while flying in close proximity to the surface will be impossible.

Bases would only act as a gathering point for your clan members, or a base of operations. It would give clans the ability to influence the factions and the systems around them (to ally themselves with 1 group over another). It is the same thing players are doing now. In a clan though, it would draw them into a relative closer proximity to their own base planet.

Adding a very very limited clan base gameplay disadvantages no-one at all. It would only add another element to the game for those who want to take it up.
From a programming point of view, it would be like adding all 'clan players' into a private group (single instance). Only limitation with that (as Braben said) would be that the maximum clan could only be 32 players (max limit of players per instance)

I suspect that if this was implemented, it would eventually turn into nothing more than a clan tag on most peoples names.

Just a thought. The most probable habitat like contraption I have heard FD talking about is some sort of inflatable asteroid base.

If you're in a clan, wouldn't it make sense to build these close to one another? In effect creating a clan-based community.
