Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Nothing like trying it for yourself.

I agree that the 1-2% lower "idle heat" of clean drives doesn't really matter while fuel scooping. But the other point stands - clean drives let you stay in silent running longer and as someone who runs several smugglers and even one SR fighter DOES matter.

You can't use SR effectively with DDs, unless you want to be pooping heatsinks left, right and centre.

Yes, but literally no one is arguing against the silent running point.
On the other hand, many people are factually incorrect about some objective truths re: dirty drives.

If I knew how to share my Asp X build... The more I read about dirty drives the more I think I should swap out what I have or rip the clean mods off.

I just wish I could god mode mats :D

Yes, but this discussion started with the statement that Clean Drives are better for explorers and smugglers, which they objectively are. It's just that DDs are better in more ways than CDs are. But they do have their place. I wasn't trying to argue

You can plug the info in manually, then use the short link tool at the top right here:
https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/asp

Afaik, the engineering numbers etc are still more accurate here, but most people find the UI much worse, and no short link tool.

No, that is not true.

Just don't fall into the "min-maxing everything according to the latest "meta"" trap that leads to grinding and frustration. :p

Engineering is part of the game, not something that you need to be done with, first to get to the game.

Ah. Yes. Numbers. They don't lie, do they. Screw how the ship feels, let's play Excel.

What are you talking about?
The OP asked how to link his Asp build.

Exploration is not better served with clean drives.
That is objectively supportable.

I even provided a quote from someone who tried the difference, based on my logical arguments, LOL.
Excel wins!

OK, I think I got it... it won't set the world alight but it's got me a long way :) If anyone has any upgrade tips, I'd love to hear them. This is my main ship (and has had the most work ploughed into it). I use it for exploration and journies just to go and visit systems and ulock engineers. It's not meant for fighting in.

Without changing the level of engineering:
https://s.orbis.zone/a4s

Going down the list:
Changed the PP to OC G2 w/ stripped down.
Remember a hot PP is the worst thing you can do for heat management, so don't use G4/5 OC if you are concerned about heat.
You had way too much power anyhow.
I even set priorities for you.

Thrusters changed to G5 dirty/drag drives, since I know you have them unlocked and that is the best mod for almost all uses.

C5 FSD and above should use the mass manager special effect.

Charge enhanced is the better mod by far, unless you need all capacity for something like a full load of plasma weapons.
You will be constrained by recharge, not capacity otherwise.
So use charge enhanced, with super conduits.
If you didn't have weapons, you could get away with a smaller PD and engine focused for more range, but since you do the choice is clear.

Other than that I added lo-draw to the shield gen, cleaned up the weapons a bit and sorted the shield boosters.
Having too many, different weapons just means you won't be able to leverage them.
It's better to keep it simple when possible.

If you actually plan to fight anything more than very, very low level NPCs, you need more shields.
C3 A class with thermal, at least.

Here are a couple of more advanced Asp builds, for when you get further along w/ engineering and Guardian stuff, should you choose.

(mild profanity)

Sir, I would rep you twice if I could. This kind of info is fantastic. Many thanks! o7

ETA - the video made me snort beer. I've seen this channel before and love the 70's/80's open university/public information tone :D :D :D

If I could make another suggestion, just go for the A class PD and shield gen.
For a general purpose Asp, the marginal gains from the lighter PD and shield gen aren't worth it.
You'll have a tougher, more versatile base to build off of.

Got some great tips for when I go choosing power and distributor options there, thanks Bob :)

Tyres, for what its worth, this is my current explorer build Asp for reference: https://s.orbis.zone/a56

It has done me proud so far, and done all I asked of it. You'll note that it is a bit over-powered in the weaponry dept. ;)

If I ever get back to somewhere with outfitting, I want to get rid of the cargo rack (cargo is just a liability for explorers, seriously. I didn't believe that before I set off, but I do now - there isn't anything really worth picking up out there, and if you do load up with escape pods and stuff, you just become an insta-target for anyone in an occupied system!), replace the 5A afmu with a Guardian fsd booster, and fit a 3A afmu in the slot where the cargo is currently.

I might even lash out on a 6A fuel scoop, as I have wads of cash now :) Though it still seems somewhat frivolous...

Sir please follow me, I'd like you to have a look at this new Krait MkII.

Now please tell me, what can I do, to put you in this fine, modern spacecraft today?

Why, I need no persuading there at all! :D A mighty fine looking vessel indeed!

I am looking forward to that new spaceship smell already... (When back at the local ship yards, anyway.)

Much truth!

If you're an explorer, in my opinion, there's nothing frivolous about a better fuel scoop!
