Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I'm still out in the boonies. I decided to fly up the galactic plane a bit and see what I run into. It seems that there are more undiscovered systems up this way, although I'm still finding ones that are already tagged.

I found this interesting item, called a "Fumerola Nitris", which appears to be a combination of a fumerole and some plant life. It scanned as a biological, though. I could not shoot the flowers off, so no mats.

The planet was really cool looking, too.

Covert theft three.

Scanned the man for level three access. Found the locker I needed and its code. Opened it. Grabbed the documents and was immdiately shot at by a tech. I suppose I was seen - be more careful next time!

Good fun though. I was hating these after failing them so many times but I know what to expect now and how to do stuff. Not exactly easy so I need more practise.

Wasted quite a lot of time on this very volcanic planet where the scanner assured me there are bark mounds.

no bark.jpg

There really aren't. Or at least, not in the places the scanner says. I even tried the twin planet over on the horizon there; same story, just less geological. As far as I can tell, there are no bark mounds here.

still no bark.jpg

Shame, I was excited for my first find of old-style biology, but if it only exists in 2-3 spots of the planet as per Horizons, I'm not sure it should even be listed on the Odyssey feature list.

But had to be done :ROFLMAO:

Can... can I recommend 50% and 25% throttle as well for the blank spaces? It's surprising how often those are useful 😹

Introducing Cerberus' Reach, Swuejua DL-Y G6

Greetings!

I give you one of the 3000ers that are among the most difficult to reach AND return alive from. I gave it the name of Cerberus' Reach (the data has already been turned in so here I post the details). I came up with the name-it is not part of the EDSM map names of anything like that. I gave it that name for the reasons I will explain below.

At 3172 LY below the galactic plane, it is by no means the deepest system but it is, in my opinion, among the most difficult to reach by conventional means (i.e. no fleet carrier). It takes a specially modified starship, careful fuel management, and the mandatory use of a 1D rail gun G5 engineered for light weight and the experimental plasma slug. In this case, the rail gun, usually meant to destroy other ships, will literally save your life.

The system is in the middle of a T Tauri area, and there are no neutron stars nearby to save on fuel to reach this system or the three others that form the way to reach it.

The following is the build you will need to reach Swuejua DL-Y G6. Yes, even the life support will need to be G5 engineered for light weight and yes, it's shieldless. I have been in systems in which I have had to do 177 LY premium jumponium jumps. Oh, and you will need the 6A double FSD that was given as a reward during the Alcor/Colonia CG. Sorry, AspX, DBX, and Krait Phantom fans, but this system is reachable only with a heavily G5 exploration engineered Anaconda or a carrier.

Why Cerberus' Reach? As we know, the mythological Cerberus, guardian of the underworld, has 3 heads and is tasked with guarding the gates of Hades and to prevent the dead from leaving it. In the case of this system, you will need to pass through 2 other systems before reaching your final destination. Therefore, we have a triad of systems-just like Cerberus' 3 heads. And in addition, each of these systems has 3 stars. And finally, in Swuejua DL-Y G6, the two most distant stars of the system are nearly 401,000 Ls from arrival to the system.

Here is the route. Begin at Swuejua JH-V F2-24, 2897 LY below the plane. It's a T Tauri system. You can reach it by conventional means.

From there, you will need to make a 171.14 premium jumponium jump toward Swuejua AA-A H1 (3064 LY below the plane). H1 will be your final chance to make sure that your fuel is nearly full as explained below. The rest of the journey will involve T Tauri systems.

Here is where the railgun plays a key part in your quest to visit Cerberus' Reach and return alive.

You will need to make sure that your fuel tank is just full enough for a 175 LY jump-no more. If you scooped a full tank at AA-A H1, this is where the rail gun comes into play. Drop to normal space and start shooting. Keep checking the galaxy map and the stats that show your jump range with premium jumponium. With this Anaconda build, a full tank will give you about 173 LY premium jumponium. When your LY jump range with premium is at about 174. 5 or at the most, 175, you are ready to continue the journey. Dump no more fuel. The rail gun is there so you can accurately dump your fuel to have a jump range of 175 LY, no more. If you dump more fuel and continue the full journey, you are risking not completing it alive.

You are now ready to perform the next jump: a 174.45 LY premium jumponium jump to Swuejua DL-Y G0, located 3195 LY below the plane. 3 T Tauri stars await you.

Swuejya DL-Y G0. The third star is 1605 LY from the arrival point (the small dot at the bottom of the photo)

You will then do a 112 LY standard jumponium jump to Swuejua DL-Y G5 which is 3143 LY below the plane-yes, another system with 3 T Tauri stars. Finally, a regular 42 LY jump to your destination:

Swuejua DL-Y G6. The two other stars are over 400,000 Ls from the arriving point.

Now comes the tricky part of the journey. Remember the use of the railgun? If you dumped your fuel correctly at AA-A H1 you will successfully escape. If you did not chances are you will not leave the T Tauri systems unless you ask your friendly fleet carrier to rescue you.

When you successfully return to AA-A H1, your fuel gauge will look something like this (look at the right side of the cockpit). As you can see, there is pretty much no margin for error.

Th is how much fuel I had left upon returning to AA-A H1 from Cerberus' Reach. And I dumped just enough fuel to have a 174.5 LY jump range)

Now go ahead and top off your tank. You now can do the 171 LY jump to Swuejua JH-V F2-24. From there, there is a nearby star system, Swuejua RO-Q e5-2 (29 LY away) which has a scoopable star. From there, you can go pretty much anywhere. You have successfully escaped from Cerberus.

Again, this system is not the deepest but its location among a sea of T Tauri systems, the very large jumps required, the precise amount of fuel required, and the use of a very specialized build (short of a carrier) make it challenging to visit and to return alive from. In addition, it is still a 3000er-and all 3000ers require careful planning to visit them without getting trapped.

Are either of the Magellanic Clouds reachable with Fleet Carriers or do they not exist in the game? I was reading about the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy in orbit below the Milkyway about 30,000 Ly distant that it had passed through the Milkyway 300 to 900 million years ago leaving a string of stars behind it.

It would be fascinating to explore something like that, I'll bet the view is incredible.

All right, exploration is now going swimmingly except for ONE mechanic that I just cant seem to nail down.
Notable signals: Geological
Oh my goodness, this feels like a broken mechanic. I've succesfully scanned a planet and my scanner says there are geological signals here. Great! So how do I find them?

Biological is easy. Blue area, land in it, youl see biological things, scanny scanny
Geological. Blue area, land in it, you'l see-... Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Used filters, but still.
Follow the sensor on your SRV, I think. I do that. Sensor suddenly goes blank and stops detecting stuff.
I dont suppose anyone with experience knows if there is some hidden trick to this, or something I am missing?

Behold, all of the geysers and fulcrums the scanner tells me are here.

Is there a "best system type" for covert theft missions? My current thinking is low security type ones but a bit of me is thinking RNG...

EDIT Damn. I've just found out thefts are not the unlocking the engineer. And I just did theft four - first time I managed to do one by disabling the alarms first.

Not always true, but sometimes. Blue areas indicate where geological features may be found - but it isn't a guarantee that they definitely will.

My personal tactic is that when coming in from orbit with the blue overlay active, there are always several shades of blue which indicate different types of surface; biomes if you will. I like to land on the border of two shades, because it's likely that geological features only spawn in one of them, and I might get an idea of which side to veer towards as I descend.

But if you can't see an obvious steam vent, geyser, or lava spout, it's not time to get in the SRV; keep flying. If you skim over the surface at 50-100m altitude, you're likely to start seeing features at some point. Make sure you have vertical thrust bound to something sensible (mine is W) so you can comfortably manoeuvre around without bumping the ground or constantly adjusting heading.

Also, some planets just suck for it, even with triple geology and a lot of blue overlay. If you really can't find anything, go somewhere else and you might find it's super dense the moment you drop out of glide. Or one planet might have all its geology on rugged terrain that's a pain to access, where the next will just have it out on the smooth plains. Sometimes you just get unlucky, but awareness that you can be unlucky helps you cut your losses and move on before you waste more time 😸

Yeah I have been told by my fellow players that it effectively just comes down to luck and nothing else.
Which is kind of-..Frustrating, to be honest.

You know that blue colour that appears? How intuitive would it be if those would only colour in the areas where the geological signal sources are found? You know, so that you dont have to cover the entire planet and narrow your search down a bit with high tech sensor equipment.

..I know that is how the mechanic is SUPPOSED to work, but it clearly doesnt in a way that very obviously needs fixing to me. I mean, just look at this.

I am still having oodles of fun with this game, but sometimes, frustration does set in...

It helps to know what sort of terrain the formations like, which comes with experience, but no. There is no trick. Fly low and slow and hope for the best. And I mean very low and very slow (sometimes these things take a bit of time to spawn as you go by, so flying past quickly will miss them).

On some planets the formations are everywhere. On others they are sparse. Finding them requires luck and time.
