Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Are you sure? IIRC they attack even if you have only limpets in cargo.
That may have changed in some recent patch though.
In an asteroid ring, they will scan you and if you have limpets, they leave. AFAIK, I've never been interdicted/attempted with just limpets or just escape pods.

If you have an active cargo mission I can see them coming after you. But if not then I doubt it, not that it isn't true, just that I doubt it.

Pirates won't care, they want commodities, but Thargoids may...though I suspect you're outside their sphere of flatulence influence...
No Thargoid sightings in Suhte and the surrounding area, yet.

On my materials collection rounds, when collecting data and manufactured materials, I usually have my cargo rack stacked with Limpets. Although them pirates quite regularly interdict me, hoping for some riches, they don't seem to be interested in Limpets.
I guess in the black market is no room for Limpets...

Thanks for the info. I'm not really into the PVE foot soldier thing but I'll apreciate the extra features I'm sure.
I have all the gear but only at the buy it from the shop level of upgrading, but have hardly done any soldier stuff but I am enjoying finding strange new life while walking around, I even find the planets less depressing than I used to in Horizons, though I am not sure quite why.

I tried Keelback, Type-9, Python, Imperial Cutter, I don't think there is one ship that really come on top, I'm not looking to stay in the field for hours, and the Type-7, once engineered properly seems to be able to do the job.
My most successful laser miner was my Anaconda unfortunately I didn’t record the build but I think there were 3 size 2 and 2 size 1 lasers, 3 collector and 1 prospector limpet controllers. Ordinary shields as I have no interest in Power Play so I won’t indulge just to get the rewards.
2 X 6E Cargo Racks (128 Cap). 5A Prismatic Shield GeneratorThermal resistant ︎︎︎︎︎. 1I Detailed Surface Scanner. 4B refinery. 2 X 5A Collector Limpet Controlers. 4 X 1D Mining Laser [Fixed]. 2 X engineered Shield Boosters, I'm at 32.38MW, of 22.85MW deployed.

The ship is nimble and agile enough to defeat interdictions, was easy to engineer with parts from previous ships and new one and cheap (17,472,260 Cr), for what I do it's enough for me, for heavier load I have a well armed and well shielded Imperial Cutter, I don't even try to evade interdiction with it, I get a bounty instead.
Yes it is a great ship in many ways.

Are these upgrades for the Scarab?

Which station would equip one on my Scarab?
The one on Raxxla.

The one on Raxxla.
Oh, that one.
Well...

Raxxla, here I come!
Now, where is the next Guardian Galactic Information Desk?
Nope, the Scarab cannot be upgraded. I used to love that fact, back in the beginning when I had lousy ships.

I could always take a mission that required the SRV, and know that I had just as good equipment as anyone else :)
That is comprehensible.

Does not change my wish for a rollcage for this thing...
SRV sitting on its roof, wheels pointing towards the sky...

But the more of that good good EX7 fertilizer I eat
Wait... Are you a plant?
Chalk full of vitamins and minerals, eh? Everything needed for growing bones and muscles, yum!
That sounds kinda off for a fertiliser.

Or...

Does that mean that you too are a humanoid plant?

I have met quite a few humanoid planks, indeed. But humanoid plants? That is new.

...I reached Tripe Elite but I don't play PvP, so some might think it's too easy, understand, I'm gonna be 64 in 7 days, a bit too slow for PvP now...
Aye, tell me about it. I'll be 73 in a month from now and very nearly extinct, but somehow I've still managed to blunder my way around planet
surfaces, using a zimmer frame doing exobiology and whatnot. PvP is right out for me as well, for the same reason as you so I only play in hide-behind-the-sofa mode also.

I'm almost back at the bubble right now, in my Asp Explorer where my other ships are (so far a Mamba, Type 6, Sidewinder and trusty old Cobra MkIII.) I've almost completed a 10,000LY round trip to do some exploration and plaster my name on a few things here and there.

I've also spent quite a bit of this trip trying to get the hang of prospecting on planet surfaces in the SRV, as amongst other things I need
phosphorus and sulphur so I can get to level 5 with Felicity Whatsname and upgrade jump ranges and power plants etc on my fleet. I also need
those materials so I can refuel my SRV when I'm out in the middle of nowhere. Believe it or not though, I've only just now had some success with that, as the prospecting aspect had held no prospect whatsoever for me.

I'd been wondering if I was doing something wrong, but yesterday I landed in a crater on one of those creamy-coloured with reddish-brown blotches on them rocky ice planets and BINGO! Managed to find and scoop quite a bit of what I need.

Somebody somewhere said the best ship for exploration is the Anaconda, but I'm pretty sure it would be no good for exobiology as it's hard enough
trying to land in mountainous areas in the Asp, never mind a gigantic great lump that's much bigger. In fact, I'm thinking of trying my Sidewinder out for that.

If you want a small ship for exploration that lands anywhere* and can get good jump range - not the best but good - try the Dolphin. It has enough room for everything you need and engineering it makes it extremely viable.

Here's mine for comparison:

* Relatively :D

Ah ok cheers. (y)

Maybe I'll make that the next ship I buy then. I'm a bit of a hoarder anyway and my aim is to own one of every ship out there, including the good for exploring but as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike for exobiology Anaconda. :D

I have my Stargazer equipped for material collecting, which includes an SRV bay and a DSS to find those elusive geological sites and harvest them. I think this would suffice to get exobiology under way. Still has some room left for whatever you might need to get the job done.
And I am able to land that triangle in spots where I have to dismiss the ship after deploying the SRV to be able to get out of there...
Haven't parked that ship on a plateau, so far, mainly because I fear that I would drop down a cliff when taking off with the SRV.😅

Some of the recommendations for the Anaconda as an explorer come from a while ago before Odyssey and Fleet Carriers, when if you wanted to explore something a long way away its superior jump range even with a lot of equipment was a time saver. But even then its supercruise handling and large landing footprint counted against it.

Nowadays with much more to do on a planet the size issue is more significant, and with Fleet Carriers to get a ride on to the remote corners of the galaxy extreme jump range is also less important.

Personally I think the greatest asset for an exploration ship is you like to be in it and fly it for a long time.

Think - and, of course it's all down to personal preference - the Dolphin is quite a fun ship to fly. But, as with all things Elite, there is a compromise and that, for me, is the somewhat restricted cockpit view.

Of course, if that really is an issue, one can always build a T6 explorer. Its viability was only recently pointed out to me and I have to concur... although jump range is somewhat reduced and that may be an issue if the FC is out of one's reach.
