Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

So, what the heck are they and why are they taking so long to get here? Any thoughts, ideas or rumors?

Oh man, you didn't get any screen shots? Too bad, I've never been hyperdicted.

This is from the time last week when I was chasing a stargoid - I have mangled the image to bring stuff out of the dark (it was in interstellar space) it doesn't look so horrendous normally:

Just wait for the pirate's high-wake signal to appear on your scanner display - once they have gone, nothing else turns up (except if you are near a res site of course).
As I said before, they stayed around for several minutes and only left because their scanning me alerted the system police...
I had this happen the other day, too, when I was out in Khun, trying to mine some stuff from one of the ringed planets there. Four ships in a wing. But there, the police took way longer to arrive after they had scanned me. They were already there when I came out of SC and stayed after scanning me, circling at the edge of my scanner's reach. In this case I left before them, after several minutes of unsuccessful scanning and tickling of rocks because I went in there blind. I forgot to take a DSS scan of the ring beforehand and foolishly forgot the prospector limpet controller.
Last time I was out mining, some time ago, my experience was quite different: a single pirate ship that would scan you, complain about your empty cargo hold and off.

What you saw in the distance was the fourth that should have scanned you, missing the point of entry by a significant margin. And thus somehow unable to find you, leaving his escort in a state of confusion (Where is our wing leader? Does any of us have a scanner installed? What now? - Along those lines).

Yes I think you are correct - it just seemed bigger than I had seen before at such a distance and looked to be like a ring of white objects - but it was probably just the leaves.

1. It is quite normal to have a wing of pirates turn up when you first enter a ring, it isn't just single ones. Pirates flit around after scanning you, even going out of sensor range at times, which is why I wait until I see their high-wake icon appear. Sometimes you get NPCs turn up and start mining too. I always scan the ships that turn up, that way I see the name on the high-wake.

2. Security doesn't turn up because you got scanned - they respond to crimes against you, scanning you is not a crime, otherwise security would jump on any ship scanning you in a RES - they don't - just like they don't jump on you because you scan ships, even security ships. Wanted ships can be flitting about for ages before security decides to take them on. I am talking at RES there.

I'm also having the same issue that @thinder had the other day: no ore of kind in the hotspots.

Tried a little platinum mining in a hotspot and there was none. A bit of everything else, but no platinum after 14 attempts.

Went back to the carrier and got the Python and headed to a monazite hotspot, no monazite. A bit of everything else, but 9 cores later, not a single monazite core.

1: I see. It was a first to me, until now.
I only had single pirates jumping in, scanning me, moaning, and leaving again - maybe a coincidence?
Like, they "planned" to interdict me just as I left supercruise, targeted my wake and followed me this way. Would explain why they jumped in so close to me.

2: That makes sense.
This means it was a random event I witnessed. Just like these two Anacondas in police livery I saw in another cluster after the server maintenance...

This is my first attempt to engineer something for personal equipment, and I'm frustrated by not finding missions offering surveillance log rewards.
Now I'm even more disheartened to learn the only engineering mod I have an interest in right now means 100+ hours of grinding my way through other mat collection, upgrades and whatever hoops those engineers want me to jump through.
At this point, I give up. Night vision would be a nice to have QoL upgrade, but I'm not going through all that to get it.
I shall get back to adding to my ship based combat rank 😁

Thank you very much for the heads up 👍
There's no denying on-foot engineering is really grindy but, like @Codger I find it quite fun. Also as @Teir implies, you seem to find more mats when not actively looking for the ones you need. This seems very true of data.

For other stuff, there's larceny for weapon schematics and everything else is great when you've powered up a settlement and gone on a scavenger hunt.

To be clear: You're not mining in Resource Extraction Sites, are you?

If so, don't do that. That is a no-no unless you're very experienced. You mine in hot spots you find with your Surface Scanner. Never mine in a marked RES spot.

Q: Is it possible to farm materials in Horizon and still use it in Odyssey?

For engineering it would be a lot faster it seems.

I used to do it when I first got Odyssey because of that - how much easier it is.

Then it got to where I felt sort of like it was cheating, so I stopped doing it. I can't actually remember the last time I logged in to Horizons. It's been a few months at least, and I've only been playing the game since April.

If you mean materials like focus crystals, sulphur, anomolous bulk scan data etc. then yes, absolutely. What you won't get in Horizons is the on-foot stuff like circuit switches, SDP's * and compact libraries.

* Some would argue these aren't present in Odyssey either...

I only go into Horizons when I need to solve a "separated from my ship" issue that cannot be resolved in Ody. Doesn't happen very often but it does still happen. I think the last time was on my carrier and my ship was still in space and I couldn't transfer it nor could I choose another ship...There may have also been a server disconnect involved that created the problem in the first place.

I may hop over to Horizons if I need to visit Dav's Hope. Or roam some geo sites as these are much better - IMO - than Ody. Or, indeed, I get stuck sans ship.
