Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Oh, finally~!!

It took me 26 low intensity conflicts to get to this 🤷‍♀️

Mine is 8-6 years old, and does its job (EDH 3.8 @ 4k) fine. :)
Of course it's (badly) outdated! :D
It doesn't really matter for as long as it works for you.
I had to make with a rig I upgraded in the same case I got from a Pentium III until it couldn't cope with the heat of the last upgrade (Ryzen 5 5600X/1080Ti), this time I get years of pension arrears to spend and I've been waiting that long for it, it's not gonna happen again.
I figured I might just as well splash as much as possible to have a proper 4K VR PC, I haven't been playing DCS since my G2 packed up, with the refund, I purchased my first GSkill kit and won 6.04% at 4K compared to the Crucial Cl16 of same frequency and capacity it replaced.
Looking back, it was a blessing because I learned a lot about the Ryzen (Zen 3), bounding RAM to the CPU etc, since Zen 3, AMD have focused on low latency, the Ryzen 7 5800X 3D goes even further with load of cache, this combination Cl14/Ryzen 7 5800X 3D should bring even more gain at 4K, but I needed to learn about it by losing my VR headset...
The good thing is that being in Britain, I can sell what I replaace to CEX if it passes their tests, it will help reduce the cost of this upgrade, I got my GTX 1080Ti from them, with a two yeaars warranty.

Hmmm... I thought all the neutron stars in the Inner Orion Spur had already been discovered by now, especially ones only 3,200 LY from Sol but anyway, I just got a first discover on this one:

It's a lonely one though with no planets to keep it company. (I also said "no thanks" when it asked me if I wanted to take a risk to get the extra jump range. )

Why is it that, most of the time everything runs really smoothly in 4K but, all of a sudden, the frame rate just suddenly goes mental and drops to single fingers?

Bizarre.

Aaaaanyway... I'm putting together another gun. Yet again :D
If this happens to me, it usually means that my system is throtteling down due to thermal issues. And is usually accompanied with an increase in fan noises.
Even though I would not dare to run the game in 4k...😰

Thing is, it happens randomly. It could be the first bit of on-foot run-to-my-ship-from-the-lift-in-the-station-hangar or could be hours later. Then, the very next tme I do that, everything is as smooth as silk.

I mentioned this elsewhere - but every so often moving from lift to ship I get sudden frame rate drop. Other times at the same station it doesn't happen so it is not repeatable for me but it is definitely something in-game, something loading or rendering - temps fine, no throttling, just GPU 100% for no discernable reason. If it was the same place each time I could understand it but no, sometimes smooth others this horrible drop into the 20's.

Settlement fires can sometimes slow me down too. Regardless of whether they are visible or not.

From what I've read, that happens in this game from time to time regardless of resolution.
I've been running msi afterburner and riva tuner for a while for the OSD. Sometimes an instance is using much more GPU than normally (100%) and I get FPS drops. Seems to go away if I relog to desktop or go somewhere else and come back. I haven't counted how often it happens, just once in a while. Still using the OSD confirms what I suspected a long time, that the exactly same place can be either fine or occasionally have framerate drops.. 🤷‍♂️

Edit: Above I mean relog to main menu.

How does the CPU load look in these instances?

I'm not sure it's relevant, but I'll try to keep some notes on it. I still have a 1660Ti but upgraded the CPU to a 12900k with DDR5 RAM, so I don't think the CPU is the issue and it's kind of hard to tell, since I just see an aggregate CPU counter and it's always quite low. But there is definitely some kind of bug that just appears occasionally, and the increase in GPU usage is more than apparent.

Google fed me an article about quark stars and 30 mins later here I am after a while off, 5 jumps out from Shin Dez, on this pleasantly warm (well over boiling) desert world where nobody has set foot before.

It's a big galaxy 😸

(This time I have gone with my DBX, the Kobold Bard. It's a little more frugal than the Dolphin, but it's quite manoeuvrable and fun to fly. If you enjoy skimming low over planetary surfaces looking for a landing spot. Also I'm hoping some of those iridescent paint jobs from last december will show up for it!)

Found this absolutely stunning ice planet with a 100% oxygen atmosphere. Nearly passed over it because it's just bacteria down here, but I'm glad I decided to take a closer look anyway 😸

On the equator at noon, this place heats up to about -40 degrees C... there is a small temptation to take a breath...

COL 359 SECTOR RM-S C5-11, for anyone interested. Only a dozen jumps from Shinny D in any fast ship.
