Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Is your Mamba big enough?
I'm not sure. It can carry 14 passengers as I have it set now. But I'm not looking to make money, I just want to experience the new stuffs.

If I decide I want to do more, then I'll have to bite the bullet and build a ship expressly for the purpose.

it was obvious that the Cutter is actually a great choice for the job
I have 2 Cutters as it is, and I don't want to refit them. So...I guess I could buy a 3rd one if I really like the gameplay. I actually don't expect to like it that much, though. So I'm just gonna check it out a bit and see. :)

Well, I decided to just cruise over to one of the attacked systems in the Mamba. Took the passenger cabins out, put in reinforcements, then jumped over just to look around.

I found an outpost that was under attack, with Thargoids swarming all around it. I have to admit it was pretty cool looking.

I figured that as long as I was there, I might as well take a couple of shots at the Scouts. I don't have AX weapons, but what the heck. Shoot 'em and see what happens!

I managed to kill 2 scouts, then got hit with a caustic missile and my hull was dropping pretty fast. My Silent Running key was disconnected some time ago to prevent accidents, and I wasn't even sure where in the Controls setting it is. So, I jumped out to my nearby carrier and repaired there. I had 33% hull left when I landed -- it really goes down fast.

So I don't know now what I want to do. I don't really dig the combat. It's ok, but it's not that engaging to me. And the rescue thing requires a new ship.

I guess I'll think on it a bit! :)

Understood. You might need to do something to refresh the mission boards since you might not always find any missions for that few people.

I just put passenger cabins in a Python I already had, fitted it with military grade armour and did heavy duty grade 3 on it. I recon 650 points on armour is just enough if you take a caustic missile hit on leaving. Gives enough time to get back. I've got 1100 points in armour and it dropped to 39% by the time I landed.

I've managed to avoid the Thargoids so far in my Asp X with no weapons.

Still doing on-foot CZs at Etian - lost a medium and won a medium so far, so I'll do another medium then give a high a go.

Also I left this system for a bit to check out the prospecting to see if it's been improved in Ody after the update. I think it might have in some ways - ie I managed to pick up some high grade stuff from crystalline fragments, which before the update were only dropping the common stuff. However, in some cases the shooting at them has got worse as often you can keep shooting at a target and nothing drops - which is as it was before, but this time even disembarking and shooting with my guns didn't work either.

Another possible bug is I didn't get a first footfall when I should have, even after I exited the game to the main menu and went back in. No message came up when I was on the surface saying "first footfall confirmed etc" but maybe it will show now next time I go back in from the client on the desktop. Trouble is I can't remember where the system/planet was now...

There are 3 ways of dealing with caustic goo eating your ship (4 if you count blowing up)
  • Get to a dock that can repair it
  • Cook your ship using silent running, this will be an issue with a Dolphin and a really cold build ship might also be in trouble
  • Shoot yourself with an experimental Decontamination limpet, use a repair limpet to fix the damage but remember they are both prone to failure if there is shooting going on nearby.

This is a serious question so please don't flame me if I am being obtuse...

What on earth (can we say that?) are F D doing with these Thargoids? I mean, how are we actually supposed to combat flying cabbages whose weapons can destroy station bulkheads and who are not even tickled by station lasers? We can't even scrape a station by ramming it full boost in a fully-laden T9 and our ships melt like butter under station / settlement defences.

The whole thing looks so horrendously stupid and definitely is not at all appealing to me. Is it just some deranged coder's notion of "Hey the game needs a Boss" or what?

What am I failing to appreciate?

Re my comment before this one about the surface prospecting I tried out after the update. The high grade mats I managed to get were from crystalline clusters, not fragments - ie these things:

It still seems to have improved though, in as much as before the update the clusters were only dropping the common stuff, even when the composition of the body they were on included high grade mats.

Fit rail guns or small Gauss cannons if you have them on Dolphin/any ship. Fire them and boost while in silent running. That will soon cook your ship.

Does it show on the system map?
It didn't show on the system map when I was there and checked, including after I'd exited and gone back in (but only as far as the main menu, not all the way back to the client on the desktop.) I don't know which system and planet it was now though as I've forgotten.

I do remember that the planet had already been mapped by another commander, (I also mapped it before I landed) but there was no footfall by anyone so it should have been for me. Doesn't seem like a problem with all landable bodies though as there was another one before that in a different system where I did get the first footfall.

I thought I read somewhere that you could get real close to a star and it would cookoff the goo.
I have made scooping errors, crashed into a star and just sat there stern on to it while a would be interdictor crashed into it trying to get in behind me. None of which got me hot enough to cook the goo.
You could possibly do it during the escape after crashing but it seems unlikely.

I assume it was not in the bubble, cuz those are blocked.
