Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I'm just writing some software for one of our clients, while spending a rather unhealthy amount of times viewing these forums :)

Game wise, I'm trying to Explore my way to Elite - but in an enjoyable manner - Currently heading out to the Crab Nebula to get some nice piccys

Opps - just realised this is a newcomers forum - sorry (I've been here since alpha !)

Sorry

Don’t be sorry. Newcomers sub-forum would be useless without experienced Cmdrs sharing their knowledge and experience, it’s also just a nice place. I’ve been using it since I started nine months ago and haven’t been escorted from the premises. Yet.

I don't know if you tried this but using a couple of point defense turrets on your ship will kill all their missiles, if you park close enough.

I then use my parking brake and forward thrust to stay still/upright while they shoot at me.

I fitted them on my Asp when I got the FSD booster but forgot to put them on my DBX for the PD, hopefully that should be a good combo as the DBX can get me in nice and close, though I don’t know what sort of range they have if I’m on the other side of the site.

Thanks for the forward thrust tip, I’ll try that next time I visit. The handbrake alone helps but isn’t enough all the time.

I'm in the general vicinity of the Crab right now. Station X is currently my ops base, whilst I survey the surrounding 1kly. There are some great photos to be had in that part of the galaxy! The Crab nebula itself is very striking, and visible from a considerable distance. (It looks a bit shabby when you are "in" it, unfortunately, the textures are a bit rough :) )

Thanks for the reply - I didn't realise there was a station out there, that will make life easier! You learn something new every day

Cheers

I am now promoted to "serf" in the imperial navy. They seem to think I can handle elite rated missions so ranking up will prove a challenge.

In the dim and distant past we were locked out of missions that wee above our rank but they showed up on the mission boards so a hullabaloo was raised on the forums by those who wanted all the money now and rank locking was removed. Basically you just need to wait till a mission that looks less impossible comes along and do that one.

Enjoy, I loved the Clipper. Just watch out of the drift, just because you have asked it to stop don't expect it to react too quickly! Used to over shoot my landing pad on a regular basis until I got used to it.

Been away for a long time. Stopped playing before Horizons first released. (Nothing to do with the game and everything to do with life.) Now that I'm back I have been looking through the changes, and plan on buying Horizons tomorrow. In preparation I deleted my old bounty hunter commander who was just sitting in a RES aboard his trusty vulture.

Starting new, I decided to forego my kickstarter ...er... start options and began yesterday in a Sidewinder with 1000 credits. Been running missions, and really getting back into the game. Now that I have a handle on outfitting, trading, mission running and combat again, it has begun! I started my Elite journey almost a decade ago with FFE. Ive played all the games, and really... there is only one ship in this series. So a couple minutes ago I purchased a Cobra Mk III. By far my favorite ship in anything sci-fi ever. After applying my kickstarter paint job I am deciding what to do next. More courier runs? Maybe take down some pirates? Maybe start some actual trading? The sky is the limit! After all... this Cobra isn't going to upgrade itself. :)

Good luck commanders!

Splurged about 50m on the Clipper and engineered a bit. Next up, rebuidling my now heavily depleted coffers. Mind you... it IS a nice ship. I need a name for her... I'll sleep on it and see what comes to mind. Perhaps Susan Sto Hellit, Mrs. Cake or Verity Pushpram.

Or Binky? ;)

The Clipper has the lines and air of quiet self-confidence to make a very good "Susan Sto Helit", in my opinion. What else would a "goth Mary-Poppins" fly? :)

Lovely. I love the Clipper. I just managed (finally!) to buy a T9 last night (dream ship for ages), so that will become my trader, so am going to refit my Clipper for exploration. If you're going to head off into the darkest reaches of the black, you might as well travel in style!

Exploration? I interesting. So far mine does a 30ly max jump but there's no stripping down done or experimental FSD yet.

Mine's at just over 40ly but I'm not yet finished with the engineering. Anything 35+ suits me for exploration (there's plenty to see even if that won't get me quite everywhere) so when the Clipper is at 45 or even a smidge more I'll be very happy with it.

I bought my second Cmdr Lig Lury Jr. a Krait whilst I was at Colonia having used the Neutron highway for the first time and discovered that having some extra space for a decent AMFU was a must. There's not enough cash in the account for it all to be A rated so I stripped the AspX of what I could and fitted out the MkII. Before I left for Colonia I went and did the Guardian FSD booster on my way back from sitting on the Gnosis (having hidden from all the fighting!) This account only has access to Farseer at the moment and I don't know if or when I'll get to unlock any others but it's good enough for exploration.

My first ELW with Lig Lury Jr.

....and I've found the radio stations discussed elsewhere invaluable on the journey so far. Boney M, ELO, Steeler's Wheel, Mott The Hoople and Bowie have all appeared, nothing quite beats flying through hyperspace to The Sweet's Ballroom Blitz. I'm worried Lig may return with Dave Hill's wardrobe and no idea it's the 34th century.

Now there is a thought for the suggestions forum, flares platform boots and glam rock gear for the holo me wardrobe.

Great pictures, Rock!! Congratulations! :)

FWIW, I am still meandering back to the bubble...other games and life have cut into Elite time but I'm still enjoying the trip! About 17k LY to go.

Hey Dan, good to see you're still out there somewhere :) Big trips probably shouldn't be rushed, not if you want to keep your sanity.

I played Far Cry 5 the other night, the first time I've played another game since starting ED I think. It was on my list of games to play long before it came out and then I found this and didn't get around to buying it. The problem I have is instead of seeing the issues with this game that everyone points out I noticed all the same issues of gameplay within Far Cry 5. Every game is go here, get that, shoot this.....so I'm going, getting and shooting here in ED as I've got more space to do it all in :D

Just the massive Elton John star shades will do me, in bright green if possible. :)

Oh yes, this has been a very relaxed excursion by my standards. Mixing things up with other games has been good too. I'm having fun :)

FC3 is my favorite, and they optimized it a bit for Xbox One X so it's really sharp and smooth now.

Okay, back on topic :)

Poking around in NGC 1817. Not an easy place to get to, an open cluster that is almost as far "down" as you can go around that part of the Perseus arm. Took me 1 premium, 1 standard, and 1 basic fsd synthesis to get into it - I did spot a neutron star I could have overcharged at, but I haven't done one of those yet, and I am chicken :D

From here, there is absolutely nothing outwards, and the Magellanic clouds glow uninhibited in the darkness. In the other direction, the galactic plane, it's dust clouds, and a sprinkling of nebulae span the vaulted sky, making a stark contrast against the true black. In some directions, the other members of the open cluster make bright pin-pricks of the only stars in the vicinity to be distinguishable individually. I like it here, it's like being on a summit, and surveying the landscape beyond.

I have "a few" pictures, I'll add one or two when I've sorted them out a bit more!

Goodnight from the edge,

Si.
