Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

The thing to do when you get to where the stars get as far apart as your jump range is to make sure you don't jump anywhere without the fuel to jump back, especially if you are doing a boosted jump.
If the system is only reachable in the longest jumping ship in the game using no internals and a small fuel tank that is nearly empty then no one can rescue you.

Definitely. I'd only jump somewhere with 2 times the mats for the relevant jump boost, and knowing the destination was scoopable / have more than twice the amount of fuel for a jump back. I don't do suicide missions :)

It's probably the mountain-man part of me that does that. It's not about being overly cautious, it's about making sure you don't over-extend yourself unnecessarily to a point where others have to risk themselves to get you home. Knowing your capabilities and your kit is key to that :)

I've been to the bottom of the Perseus arm, and seen nothing below me, with the system I was in being the last point before the Magellanic clouds. Quite a sight, and quite a profound feeling of being on the edge.

I love the Clipper. I have one partly engineered. Gotta finish it sometime soon :)

I have only just got into engineering, yesterday. Left my Clipper parked just outside Maia, flew back up to Felicity in my T6 and engineered it a bit, now love the T6 and can hardly wait to see what she can do with my Clipper. T6, T7 and Clipper are my ship podium so now just want to engineer the heck out of all three. Then mothball two and fly around posing in the Clipper.

G5 FSD FTW. Does the Kessler run in blah blah blah. My T6 will do 36ly without being stripped down.

But look at the internals! And the option for SLF (no Alternative Ulster option though ;) ). And the power available... And the coffee machine on the bridge :)

It's a true multi-role vessel: I've messed about in Coriolis and built a decent miner, a good explorer, and an (on paper) astonishing combat ship, all inside that one hull :)

This https://s.orbis.zone/cz2 is a quick explorer build that I knocked up, gets a 50ly jump range if you don't carry toys like an SLF hangar. I'm sure it could be refined better too :) Even without the guardian tech, it's still a 40ly range ship, which is definitely good enough for the sort of stuff I've been doing, though perhaps a little dicey for the extreme edges of the galaxy.

I'm biased, though. I think it's a gorgeous craft :D

Had another look at thst build and, apart from the G5 thrusters, I think that may work for me! The only changes I think I woukd make would be to ditch the lasers as mining doesn't appeal at the moment and add some shield stuff to help protect my cowardly behind. Virtual rep only though - sorry!

Left Outotz ST-I D9-6 (Gnosis) yesterday as I was fed up with running the Thargoid blockade every time i wanted to dock and currently heading out on a bit of an exploration along the Perseus Arm , might see how far along i can get but as i reach the end of the Perseus Transit , an attempt to cross the Perseus Fade is feeling quite tempting , not sure what I will find out there , The Outer Arm Vacuus looks pretty sparse, but if i get there I it will put me roughly 28k ly from Sol and right on the south eastern edge of the galaxy, somewhere i haven't been before . I have sandwiches , biscuits and tea , and will send a postcard when I can .

Congrats!
Put on the desired special effect first and pin blueprints as you go.
That way you can do most of your engineering remotely and as you acquire mats.
For increased range FSD, that would be mass manager for c5 and above, deep charge for c4 and below.

Fyi, Professor Palin can get that Clipper to do over 600m/s.

;)

I've moved into an Empire station for a change of scenery. Going to see how quickly it takes to reach Baron and grab a Clipper. I'll see how long this novelty lasts :D

Don't overlook the Courier!

Hmmm. Checked out a Krait build on Coriolis but found it difficult to obtain a decent jump range without Guardian tech. Was hoping to get a replacement/upgrade to my AspX but to no avail. Probably missed the bleeding obvious so I'll look again later.

My Asp will do a 50ly max jump and is not stripped down to its minimum. The Krait build came on at about 38.

I think I'm expecting too much!

>50ly with 2 SLFs and 2 SRVs, boost >500

Yes I'm into the thirties in terms of FSD range in my T6 and that is without having finished the engineering (I saw that I need sulphur, assumed that I'd have to mine, groaned and left to gather equipment to fit out my Maia fleet instead), which is great as it means Maia in 18 jumps - took me 55 jumps the first time I went down there.

Thank you, and that is an incredibly helpful post so thank you for that, too. Done! Will have to check out this Palin. 600+ is amazing, particularly as I have got used to the T6 recently, which is boosting to over 400 only. Will be great to get back in the Clipper.

Don't overlook the Courier!

Seconded - I did my first three combat ranks in my Courier, great little ship. Made me feel like a rocket man, zooming about the place causing mayhem.

Virtual / "real", it's all good :) :)

The mining laser is only there because I was knocking up an explorer build, and having a mining laser to gather materials from rings can be a life saver in the right circumstances. If you have some spare time and want a truly gripping read of a spectacular tale of derring-do, (and which will explain why I carry a mining laser!), have a read of https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/308075-End-of-the-Road. Real "Boys Own Paper" stuff :)

I went and got all the bits I needed for the Guardian Power Distributor. I love the locations and the constant eeriness given by the soundscape Fd provide......but bloomin' Nora those skimmers are annoying. Not dangerous, not really anything to worry about but just irritating. Every time I'm scanning something one pops up and knocks me upside down, often wedging me between two bits of Guardian Structure, and I'm left trying to boost my way upright as my time ticks down.

I've put one in a Python I've just built as I don't really need a "top end" engineered version, it's running cool as I've built it for a bit of stealthy cargo running and the extra power boost to the smaller power plant is useful, now I'm just left looking at my Inara Fleet page and wondering quite how I managed to spend 77.8M credits on my first Python and only 47.2M credits on my second....perhaps I've finally learned to buy what I need for each job rather than just buy the most expensive of everything I can afford.

.....and yes, I really did write the word 'soundscape' in the first paragraph.:D

Addendum: So after engineering my new Python registers as having a value of 82.7M....I suppose Inara just hadn't caught up. Shame, I really thought I was doing well :)

Was out of the game for a long time (gaming room was occupied, then my throttle died).

Now that I'm back, I'm really enjoying the game again. A break really does make a difference! Doing lots of mission running to rank up (hadn't done that in a while).

Trying to wrap my head around the new Engineers work. The moment I realised I had to work through the grades on each and every module I was **** ***ing *****!! :) Trying to keep track of everything is a head-wreck, though ED Market Connector with Inara is a god-send.

Once I get the Krait and Chieftain engineered, I'll start on the Guardian sites/beacons/modules. If I can figure any of that out.

The Dweller is an engineer you can unlock right away, and he's extremely useful.
I'd put him at the top of the list just for the G5 Charge enhanced (and G5 engine focused for unarmed exploration, trade etc.) distributor.
His laser mods are pretty useful too.

Nice, I still fly mine pretty regularly.
Pretty funny how I crash all over the station, after flying the large ships for a while...

I think Farseer and/or Martuuk are good to do first since they will increase your FSD jump range and make everything else faster.
They also have some other mods that will be pretty useful until you get the rest.

I'd suggest Dweller next, for the G5 power distributor and some lesser laser mods.

Then work towards Palin (G5 thrusters) and Lei Chung (G5 Shields).
Along the way you'll unlock Qwent who does power plants all the way to G4.

That would be enough to transform any ship.

The Guardian FSD booster might be good to get early on too.
It's pretty easy all things considered.

I don't know if you tried this but using a couple of point defense turrets on your ship will kill all their missiles, if you park close enough.

I then use my parking brake and forward thrust to stay still/upright while they shoot at me.

That's kind of you, thank you. And yes I'm always glad I have shields, first time I dock the Courier after a while in my traders!

I'm just writing some software for one of our clients, while spending a rather unhealthy amount of times viewing these forums :)

Game wise, I'm trying to Explore my way to Elite - but in an enjoyable manner - Currently heading out to the Crab Nebula to get some nice piccys

Opps - just realised this is a newcomers forum - sorry (I've been here since alpha !)

Sorry

I'm in the general vicinity of the Crab right now. Station X is currently my ops base, whilst I survey the surrounding 1kly. There are some great photos to be had in that part of the galaxy! The Crab nebula itself is very striking, and visible from a considerable distance. (It looks a bit shabby when you are "in" it, unfortunately, the textures are a bit rough :) )
