Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Most people don't realize that it's them that create "the grind"...
Exactly. I've said that since I started playing.

Some games are a grind. World of Tanks, for instance. There is no way to get to the next tank except to keep grinding away at a broken MM that makes you lose 30 games in a row. Rinse, repeat.

In this game, there's so many different things to do that if you start to feel a grind, just go on to something else and come back to it later.

A true grinding game leaves you nowhere to go. You can't advance in any way, shape or form until you do this and we're going to make doing this as long, boring, frustrating and painful as possible.

This game doesn't qualify for that. At all.

I think the only time in all my years of playing I felt like something was a grind was waaaay back when I was first unlocking the Cutter. At that time there were very few options for gaining rep, and all of them were slow as heck.

I remember doing this one mission type where you had to destroy some ground bases by blowing up the generators...it's so long ago now I've forgotten all the details. I did that same mission over and over and over.

Even then, though, I was doing it to myself. I just really wanted the ship, so I stuck to it despite the tedium.

I think that's how grind happens in this game. You get fixated on wanting a particular thing. It's pretty dumb. :)

If you're not interested in visiting a Titan at the centre of a Maelstrom, ignore all the stuff about caustic sink launchers.
As always, videos on YouTube go through the process at a slower pace.
Oh, I'm interested in doing it.

I just didn't understand all you were typing and have sort of blanched at some of all the hoops you have to jump through to unlock it. I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually.

Yep, there're always other things to do in this open sandbox world galaxy!

I guess it's that "to enjoy the journey, don't focus [too much] on the destination" thing - though it's in the nature of ambition to get a bit fixated sometimes? ;]

Sometimes a break needed, or just a few deep breaths... or doing something else less difficult in the game, then back to the grind challenge... :)

...was at the point of unbearable frustration just last week - then decided to just go on a trip into a maelstrom with a much more AX-experienced friend - and had one of my best hours in this game ever.

It was a "spoiler" experience in a way, though not so much after the videos I'd already seen around and about - but really, all the previews did nothing to detract from the sheer wow of being there in-game for the first time - and, like "getting there" ahead of time, did nothing to discourage and everything to inspire interest in getting back to the game challenges, in order to be able to make the journey to the Titan by myself :]

I'd kinda like to see them. It's "new stuff" after all. I'll probably get around to it. :p

It's what Frontier have been working up to bit by bit over the past year and a half, as they get their breath back with Elite, i think - so, now that it's arrived with quite a spectacular opening scene, i'm really interested to see what further layers of this cake boss Titan will still open up, as the game seems to be taking clear steps in forward gear now... ;]

Explaining the process in any detail would take a bit of time. A description like mine gives some keywords to go search on to get the details.
Going through the process is easier when you have a fleet carrier to store cargo. I may write down the process if I get time.

So, this is the most AX-capable ship I have at the moment. I was shooting Scouts in it, some weeks ago, before all the changes, and it worked pretty well.

Would this ship still be OK for going in to get the mats for the Caustic Sink? What changes would you recommend?

:)

Understood.

I just got the corrosion resistant rack unlocked and installed. I just realized I still had light armor on it, so I'm getting that upgraded and engineered.

The needs of a ship for sneaking into and out of the Maelstrom are completely different to something you would do combat in. I'm not sure about Guardian Hull Reinforcements as I've never risked it, but Guardian modules degrade in Maelstrom systems.
You could use a Challenger, but if your looking for something easier / closer to optimal, that grade 5 overcharged power plant is the first problem.
Look the Thermals:

Compare with my Clipper which has grade 5 low emissions with thermal spread and clean drive tuning:

The Caustic Generators in the Maelstrom detect your heat. The hotter you are, the further you have to stay way from them, or spend more time in silent running popping heat sinks, to avoid them exploding causing random malfunctions in your ship that can result in you losing some cargo. You may also have to run from a Basilisk or similar if unlucky.
Even if I change the Challenger power plant to grade 5 low emissions with thermal spread, add clean drive tuning on the thrusters and switch the Guardian Hull Reinforcements (that add a lot of heat each) for human hull reinforcements, the Challenger still seems to be running very hot:

What other medium ships do you have with Military Alloy armour already engineered with grade 5 heavy duty deep plate?
Do you have a Krait MKII or Clipper, and are you willing to engineer some human hull reinforcements and a low emissions power plant?
The Krait MKII I have gets cool enough just with a grade 5 low missions thermal spread power plant.

This is the best I can get a Challenger:
The armour strength is great, but you'll need to rely on silent running and heatsinks near the Caustic Generators which adds to the things you have to do while launching and waiting for a research limpet to do its thing on a moving target.
Also buy an Enhanced Xeno Scanner from the rescue ships if you don't already have one.
