Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Keep in mind that with a bit of persistence you can get any on foot item engineered to G2 or G3 and with up to two specials fitted from the Pioneer Supplies shops, they get new stock of upgraded items every Thursday, I myself have never done any engineering for the on foot stuff mostly because of this.
Good to know... I guess when I'm back from my trip, I'll go and check some shops. And probably a certain thread in this forum beforehand...

That's done. Now to see how it performs...

Penny's moral fiber is gone to heck - just a very morally threadbare CMDR recently. But it's for a good cause to some day afford an exploration vessel to remove myself from putting their replacements also in danger.

Until such peaceful time I'm up to.. killin em all

And from what I gleaned from the conversations in this thread, getting the necessary materials isn't as straight-forward as getting ship mats
You think getting ship mats is straightforward? Well then you'll have no issue with the on-foot stuff.

It's time consuming. Very time consuming. But it's also fun.

You can get most of what you need from missions and/or data ports during those missions.

It can be confusing at first, but in the end it's not hard to understand.

Probably the weirdest thing about it is how much stuff there is to loot, and how little of it is something you want to keep. Trading it down and micromanaging your storage is required :)

Uncannily (or perhaps very cannily indeed) the AR-50 reminds of one of these:

You gotta get your design inspiration from somewhere...

Well, to obtain ship mats, I rarely fired a shot at a ship. About 99% are either from courier/delivery mission rewards (I guess about 25%) or downright being out there collecting stuff that's "lying around" (signal sources, mining, scanning and so on).
Unless there is a peaceful way to get to these data ports (preferably one that doesn't have a "screw up option" that forces you to fight on foot, there is a problem. That problem would be me. I've never played FPS games, that's not my kind of game. And even TPS games aren't really on my list of games. The closest I would get to that style is in STO and NWO. But in both cases, there is more RPG in there than actual shooter.
My preferring "the peaceful way" also proves to be in the way of getting access to one of the on-foot engineers, which requires you to complete several on-foot CZs...

On a different note, I decided to leave those Fungoida unmolested. There is another planet in this system with at least 6 bios...
Well, actually, I gave it another try. But after driving for about an hour across mountain ranges and rocks, finding meadows of Tussock on slopes so steep that I couldn't even disembark from the SRV...
not Tussock but still.jpg

Okay, in this case it was Frutexa, but still a really large patch of them on this steep hillside. I needed a little ledge to get the SRV into an orientation that allowed my to disembark:

I could actually hear my char sliding a little during the disembarking blackout. And I found myself a few steps below the craft.

Not too long after this little adventure, I decided that I don't want to spend weeks searching for the Fungoida and recalled my ship.
The Star Moth must have had a Troll for breakfast, as she didn't just land on the fairly flat plane in front of me, but somewhere 800m behind me. To get there I had to drive over a mountain ridge and some nasty terrain, only to find this:

I don't think that rock just materialized in the SRV bay...

Now I am on the second planet of the system with 6 bios. I have seen some sort of Stratum Tectonitas and scanned a Tussock Cultro sage after landing.

And on my approach to the planet I noticed some "Guardian Structure" signal - only in my HUD, though, nothing to be found in the left panel...
It looks like the ancient structures are somewhere about 80 Ls behind this planet...

I might be remembering this wrong, but I did find "Guardian Structures" used to cause my game to lock up on approach.

OK... so I think dual wielding Aphelion's is more effective (in a CZ) than an Aphelion/AR-50 combo. For me at least. However, the '50 is particularly destructive against Enforcers who have lost their shield. Their armour seems much tougher than other type's of soldiers' but the '50 rips through that.

Having said all that, my style of fighting is mainly semi-sniping from roof tops. If it's up-close-and-personal then, naturally, the boomstick comes into play. I may do an L-6 next - I already have one so it may turn into a dual-wield L-6 experiment.

The Aphelion/AR-50 combo (typically with a Tormentor as small hand weapon) seems to be the typical loadout of choice for CZ’s - lasers for shields / projectiles for armour, the plasma pistol as backup for close range or OOA moments with the main weapons… that said, a stabilised Aphelion, being a hit scan weapon (no time lag between trigger & hit) is easier to use accurately imo than even the fast-projectile AR-50 - I’m used to using a Shock Rifle primarily from years of good old UT, which is hit-scan and the projectile weapons actually take a bit of adjusting… then again, my weapon of choice in EDO these days is the Executioner, with a relatively slow moving projectile - it’s the most challenging, but I’ve been enjoying getting to grips with it - it encourages a cleaner/leaner play style and is quite enjoyable to use as one gets the hang of it - I also tend to play from a distance, sniping from the rooftops to support my team :]

…here in RL, I have some sad news: old Bong, my ship’s cat passed away last night. He was 16 and been getting increasingly frail the last year or so… in the last weeks his health had gotten worse, leading to a rapid decline in the last days… I’m feeling completely gutted tbh - if I log in at all, it will be to sit somewhere quietly on a mountain peak, somewhere on a remote, uninhabited planet, to stare at the stars… I lost an old, very dear friend last night 😔😿

Sorry to hear that :(

It was behind the planet I was approaching...

I feel with you. 😿

It was about 5 years ago that I lost my best buddy Felix, an ardent rally racer (IRL), trusty ship cat (in STO) and effective familiar for my Tiefling Wizard in NWO.
I still miss him dearly.😿
