Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Interesting.

The maiden battle was... a little awkward. The main reason being a PICNIC *. You see, the Corsair, the pre-built one, the one with all the bells and whistles on it (sans engineering though), has gimballed MC's.

My main battleship, the one bristling with guns, the one I've been using for years, has turreted MC's.

So, my fist fight, an Elite Eagle, started off well. Shields were stripped in pretty quick time.

Then I hit the MC fire button. Nothing happened. Um... did they spin up? Why were they not firing? What is going on? So, I finish the fight using lazorz only.

Checked the fire groups. OK. Pressed "fire 2", rattattatatta. OK. Checked ship functions.... ah, forward fire. Wait, I cant change it 🤪🤡

Of course, the penny did drop (eventually) but I now have to learn a slightly different tactic.

* Problem In Chair Not In Corsair.

I thought you, as an old hand would know that.
I never use turreted weapons, they are so much less powerful. I don't own a large ship yet tough.
On my Python Mk2 i have fixed weapons (Pacifiers), and two gimballed beams.

Not really. Damage Per Second is a somewhat misleading measure, in my opinion. Because it is the damage per second while the weapons are trained onto the target. As soon as the target is out of the firing arc of your weapons, you don't deal any more damage. Turreted weapons usually are able to stay on target way longer*, which would make them OP compared to the other types if they all had the same DPS.

Mind you, not every ship is nimble enough to keep those guns pointing in the right direction. And neither are all commanders out here able to perform these manoeuvres good enough to achieve this, even if their ship would be nimble enough.

*: The only way to avoid them is getting your opponent's ship between you and the turrets. Which in most cases halves the amount of damage taken.

I always thought it had to do with the recoil, for turreted and gimbled the recoil is harder on the way they are attached and fixed are so beefy because they are attached directly. Anyway, that's always been my thinking.

That's why the fixed weapons are usually the lightest of the bunch.

The difference in DPS is simply because of balance reasons, as PvP is a thing in Elite.
And even for PvE players, why bother with a fixed weapon if the turrets had the same DPS, but could stay on target way easier and thus destroy your target way quicker?

OK, I once bought ARX for some reason, I've had them sitting there for ages so I decided to spend them on the Type-9 Trading Jump-start, it's got a lot of cargo space, some weapons and a reasonable jump range. My first mission was three jumps and on the last jump npcs attacked me, I couldn't get away and I couldn't turn properly, and the weapons were useless, I died that day.

So right now I'm figuring out the safest system to go to and start my Amazon delivery service.

I got in and did the bare minimum for the CG at a low intensity combat zone. A bit last minute. Except I didn't realised the bonds needed to be handed in at two different locations depending on the faction you support, so I had to go back out. I don't know if it was a bug but none the destroyed ships left any mats behind.

Weird. I Used fixed MC's on my first account and gimballed on my second but I've never seen a forward fire option.
Totally forgot what I initially came here for...

Looks like the CMV isn't available for credits, yet... 🙁
Thanks. I was actually wondering about that before I booted up because I didn't get around to buying ARX in the end.

Weapons are next to useless on a Type 9, except for maybe some shock mines.
The best way is to maximise engineering on the drive and thrusters, and do the stop and go ting if interdicted, and have a good shield.
Or maybe use a ship launched fighter.
You could also consider the Type 8, which is way faster and more manoeuvrable.

Hi All :)

Yeah, was a bit miffed at that myself.;)

What am I up to.......I booted up the game earlier this morning and set my carrier up for a jump to a system that I'd got marked up on the gal map with a bookmark for some reason. Weird thing was I must have visited the area at some time fairly recently as the bookmark indicates this (sub bookmark icon). I can't bring up the system map to see why I possibly marked it as according to the gal map I've not visited it!
I can't delete the bookmark from the Gal map so I though I'd investigate further.
Speaking of the Galactic map in general, since these major updates (BGS & Colonisation) I find quite a few bugs and general updating time for the map to be slow. Not all of the time, but on occasion frequently. My computer and internet connections are pretty speedy with general tasks, and I've got a mid range GPU, so I'm more inclined to think it's the game itself and Frontiers servers. to be fair, some bugs have been recently squashed I've noticed, bugs in the map filter menus in particular. Problem is, as I think some of us realise, every time they update the game with some maintenance, updates and rectifying measures old squashed bugs re-appear! :D...there's some 'flakiness' crept back into the carrier's transfer cargo menus again, not game breaking but nevertheless slightly annoying.

Anyway, after doing that I went down to my vegetable garden and put some temporary netting over some pea seeds I'd planted yesterday. Incidentally, does anyone here (Uk England) miss the demise of the Wilko chain of stores?...I used to go there regularly to shop for seeds, garden netting and various other stuff including decorating materials and other bric-a-brac. Sadly now it's gone I have to go to garden centres mostly now, and pay over inflated prices for some bean and pea nylon / plastic netting.😖
I don't understand why they went bust, probably another victim of online shopping I guess....but their prices were very competitive to start with. Nearly everyone I know used to shop at Wilko's, and it's another store closed down in our fast becoming derelict town shopping centre.

When I came back from the garden I grabbed a :coffee: and sat down at the game, but the weekly server maintenance had kicked in so. 🤷‍♂️

I see there's mixed feelings about the Corsair?...some players are saying they regret getting the Stellar version as it turned out not what they expected, which is the first time I've seen anyone say that on the forum. Still, on the other hand, there's players who do like their purchase so it's all relative.

Edit...The problem with the bookmark solved ...I'd got a players carrier bookmarked connected with some materials I wanted to buy from in the past. When the carrier moves from system to system obviously any of those systems I haven't discovered / been in before I won't be able to bring up on the system map.🤦‍♂️
I've decided to keep the bookmark as is for now, the carrier / owner sells some useful stuff, yep, overpriced but still very handy when those commodities are in short supply.;)
Servers back online btw.

Jack :)
