Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Not that you need all three commodities but a did a few runs for the community goal. I can't see myself bothering with the 75%, but I just checked mid-sentaence and I'm probably only one run from getting into that bracket so I'll maybe keep an eye on it.

And does anyone know a way to see which galactic regions you've explored? It seems like an obvious thing to include.
I think if you select a region from the Codex map you can then look at the categories for that region which tells you if you have confirmed finding things in that region.

I just watched an AI generated video of a car show that had people being interviewed about their thoughts on electric vehicles. The entire thing was generated -- the huge showroom, people wandering around, various cars, and then this interviewer asking people their thoughts. I watched it, looking vainly for anything that was clearly wrong.

Nothing. The voices, the people, their faces, their reactions, the cars, the wandering people in the background, the lighting... everything seemed real to me. But none of it was real.
None of it happened. This is the issue with these tools. Their widespread availability, coupled with our seemingly innate preference for 'evidence' that confirms our worldviews, is what's terrifying. We should be very worried. One important tool we have is scepticism, which, ironically, is what led us to where we are now:
This is scary in a way -- we soon won't be able to believe our eyes and ears. Yikes.
Descartes made this very argument in the Meditations, which were first published in 1641.

I could go into an extended digression on media, literacy and power, but shan't here. Suffice it to say that the only reason the masses can read and write is that it's economically expedient (or at least was during the industrial revolution, and once people are literate, they tend to want that for their children too). Tools like Sora and ChatGPT have, ironically, democratised multimodal media production while at the same time undermining how easy it is to evaluate the media we encounter.
But what about gaming? Will we get companions and adversaries that look genuine, to be part of our gaming worlds? Imagine jumping out of your ship and going to talk to the people in the concourse and they actually can respond? They can tell you about the mission, and explain why they need it done, etc. Stuff like that?
This is on the edge of what's possible now, with large language models hooked into TTS endpoints. Good prompting - with retrieval augmented generation (RAG) to keep the LLM(s) on track and some fine-tuning to get each character to stay in character and not randomly mislead you (aka 'hallucinate') with spurious information - should be able to achieve this now. Despite this, LLMs are trained on written text, not spoken. The two are markedly different. LLM interactions are likely to feel wrong in games because of this. It's not an insurmountable obstacle, just expensive.

As noted above, it's an expensive way of doing things. Not only does the per-token cost increase greatly with TTS and STT, but the preparatory work in setting up the RAG and fine-tuning the model(s) to get them to consistently behave in desirable ways requires infrastructure, training and sophisticated - probably bleeding edge - animation work to make the mouth animations match the text, for instance. Then there are the paralinguistic considerations - gesture, facial expression, and so on. Generating responsive video on the fly is (currently) out of the question.

Integrating AI into games is not impossible; it's just outrageously expensive right now, and may never be economically practical, even if it is technically feasible.

Also, GPUs are basically AI accelerators. A shift to using AI in mass market games is likely to just exacerbate the supply issues with consumer GPUs, making them even more expensive. Be careful what you wish for!
Part of me is worried, and part of me is excited. These are strange times, indeed.
Yes. Yes they are.
I don't - and will never - use X. Can you share some information about the video so that I can search for it elsewhere?

Engineering Complete...sort of!

I now have all the Core Internals Grade 5, except for Fuel Tank and Life Support. That goes with Optional Internals 5H Guardian FSD Booster and DSS Grade 5.

No Life Support because I don't do combat (Lori Jameson - Life Support to G4). Fuel Tank I see no need.

I don't do combat, so Armour is only Grade 1.

Also, I can only get Shield Boosters to Grade 3, but I can just add another booster if it is really needed.

Yeah, neither do I. I was dismayed to discover that the link went to X :)

I found the post on Reddit in the https://www.reddit.com/r/aivideo/ area.

From what I gather, Google released a new AI generator thingy called Veo, which has resulted in a bunch of these almost real videos being created and posted. It is apparently not that difficult to make them. Argh.

It does tell you if you made any new discoveries with a simple click. Unfortunately, all my first discoveries seem to be piled up in the Inner Orion Spur even though I've been out to the Jellyfish Nebula and Colonia. Inara doesn't seem to show which regions you've visited either.

No AFMU? They don't weigh anything so you could dump a couple of cargo racks if you liked. You never know when a bit of impatient flying may cause heat damage.

Personally, I have to go with a 4G hanger because it'd drive me nuts if I had an SRV accident on a long trip and could no longer break things up with a little surface mining/exploration. Though at least you can still do exo without an SRV. I prefer that method really.

I also don't predominately do combat, but that's not to say I don't do it. I quite often encounter the opportunity when I'm carrying out stacked trade missions though. If I'm in the mood I'll take on those dastardly pirates who are trying to relieve me of my cargo.
I nearly always have grade A life support though. This is mostly fitted on my ships as a safeguard against my own sporadic incompetence with for example, landing on planets, docking at space stations and a tendency to be slightly on the 'robust' side with bio hunting.

In short, most of my ships are engineered to high standards as regards shields, life support, armour and speed, to counter the consequences of slap happy piloting!
I can truthfully say I am fully experienced in the art of piloting my ship when the canopy is missing or shattered, my hud has been obliterated, and my air supply is running out....very exciting gameplay! 🤪

And what am I doing presently....🤔....drinking some nice strong coffee, chomping some buttered marmite toast and slowly making my way back to the bubble, this morning. 😊

I happened to not have reinstalled the AFMU and Repair Limpet Controller after carrying 50 units of Kamitra cigars for the engineer Hera Tani.

When I did the 5K trip, none of my modules got below 100%. I did tap a wing once on a landing and shields dropped to like 97%. All that did was get the wing tip dirty! Buffed right out.

Heat? In a Mandalay? Not an issue. I even dropped the Heat Sink I was carrying. This ship never gets above 53%. Only real need might be to cool down and run from a bad guy, but that's never been an issue when running with no cargo. When fuel scooping it gets to maybe 50%. This ship seems to have ice water running through its hydraulic lines!

The 2G hanger is for weight reasons. Only need one Scarab SRV. I use the low "Granny Gear" and creep along when I use it. I don't do any fast running around. That thing gets a little squirrly at speed. I fly to each bio and drop almost right on top of it, so no SRV needed since Stratum is found mostly in flat open areas. Even so, I don't get out and run around so an SRV isn't really needed. My jump range is right at 77.92Ly with the SRV so no big deal.

Jack :)

Your ship is your friend! Be nice to your friend. ;)

I've done all the engineering I really need, without doing any combat. The Life Support module size is solely for reducing weight. A 4A is 6T heavier and drops range by about 1.3Ly.

I know of no way to increase Armour without doing combat to access the engineer, so it's at Grade 1.

Well, I do ship-to-ship combat, it saved my bacon a few times, I feel your pain brother. It is a MAJOR pain in the but navigating around without a HUD.

Well.... I'd say if you use autodock in this situation, it's your own fault if you get to experience the full range of ED's sound engineering 😁. You got almost full shields, still a lot of hull - boost that baby in and slam it on the pad. If you hit the corner right, you won't even bounce. You already wasted more than one minute with your slow way in - if you request docking at 7500 meters out, you can be on the pad before the timer hits 9:00 left. And you still need to go into the hangar.

Hi All :)

Your ship is your friend! Be nice to your friend. ;)

Awww!....now you're just making me feel guilty!
I do abuse it sometimes, it's amazing though how strong a Cutter or a Fed Corvette actually is (once you've got the critical modules engineered up to the hilt). I've often slammed my Corvette into an asteroid at full pelt when mining, not intentionally, but it sometimes happens, usually my shields get a tiny bit of 'wear' but it's only about 20%, I've never experienced anything as low as roughly down to say 50% though.

Most of my ships I think... ...well as far as I can remember, and the main ships I use for trade, combat and mining certainly have got the (just checking)...25.00 min timer duration Life Support Module. Okay!...I'm a wuzz :D... but whenever that canopy starts cracking I'm glad I've got it!

Right!....I'm still heading back into the bubble, though I keep getting side-tracked with the occasional unexplored systems and potential future mining spots. One thing hasn't changed much with core mining. Observation:- If you encounter some core producing asteroids in a Platinum hotspot (Metallic rings) they're usually platinum bearing ones (but not always). If you mine asteroids in for example Monazite hotspots there's a good chance the core asteroids can be anything but Monazite. You might find they're for example Serendibite or some other rare metal or mineral. 🤷‍♂️...still, no big deal, it's all profitsiss as an old Teladi once told me a long time ago.😏

I should be back in the bubble by (looks at my space time chronometer) about 9 or 10pm tonight. First stop is to see how my *Coriolis station is fairing, then hand in my mission stuffs for the last CG, and hopefully get the engineered mining laser (I'm not sure if I'm owed one or two 🤔).
I might even take part in the current CG...we'll see how it goes.
*Thinking of player named stations, is the naming feature working okay now?....I seem to remember some hiccups a while back....I've yet to (and pay ARX) formerly name my two, they've still got the game generated ones.

Jack :)

I've have 5 minutes oxygen, I figured if I need more, I'll synthesize it. I was at a hazres on the other side of the GG, the issue was not having a HUD to see where I was going. The canopy is a common failing on those Kraits, I really enjoy hooking the nacelles on the Imperial Clippers and boosting them into asteroids, I guess it's my fault.

I will look at the link though.

I realised that after shutting down a supercharge due to heat warning, I could just just throttle up and ride the gravity wave straight to the target. No need for another supercharge really.

I suddenly realised that my regular Krait had no deep plating 👀 so I was making a 12,000Ls trip to Selene Jean. It was pretty fast.
I might even take part in the current CG...we'll see how it goes.
You may as well if you enjoy mining. I've never tried the abrasion blaster but I was thinking of replacing one of my three mining lasers on the Type-8 with one of those. If only to experiment.

Yeah, I mostly just write off the Krait's canopy if I'm facing something like a threat level 8 or multiple annoying targets.

I could've sworn that night vision gave you some kind of HUD back though. I just haven't noticed it recently. Maybe I'm misremembering.

A successful little trip sans carrier. Thee ELW's, quite a few terraformable WW's and HMC's. All in all, very satisfying.

A nice little find on the last planet. Recepta Umbrux @ 64mCR:

So, now I'm pootling back in a straight line to - but not in any hurry - the bubble..

Barring any accidents, I should be back in about 62 jumps.

Sorry, I meant the most recent CG...Trade wars I think it's called, with rewards for those 6,4 & 3 grade distributors....not that I need them, it's just something different to do! :)

I haven't discovered either of those!...yet . Can I ask what type of planet you found those on? icy, rocky etc. and maybe the type of atmosphere?
I still haven't arrived back in the bubble yet (got side-tracked once again) so there's still time and distance to do some bio / exploration I can do before I get back there.
If I had an idea what planets to look out for I might come across them....or discover something else in the meantime! ;)

I'm presently mapping out a system that's been discovered before, but the commander who discovered it has only discovered the main stars...not the 40 odd other bodies in the system. It's one of those systems I frequently come across that the commander has passed through... probably on the way to more important targets in mind maybe, and has only clocked the main stars. Nothing spectacular in this system, but there's a few ringed gas giants, 3 bio planets and various landable planets.
I'm just landing on the first planet to see what's there, I've scanned and landed on the other most interesting ones, so with that done I'll be moving my carrier off to somewhere else nearby.

Yes get it right and it is a very good way to travel.

That is now (at time of posting) the previous CG. The current one is hauling for Power Distributors that might be niche.

I heard about that but never tried it out, it may have been patched as an exploit.

The 75% tier jumped quite significantly so I had to get back in. I'll make another run to give me a half decent buffer zone. It's the principle, you see.

Aaah, thanks. I did wonder if it was a bug they squashed. I'm just glad to know it's something other people were aware of and I'm not going crazy. Shame though. It was a handy little trick for ships like the Krait.

And yeah, that wasn't Jack's fault. I just managed to confuse myself by jumbled two sentences together in a way that didn't make any sense at all. Kind've sentence reading dyslexia.
