Well I decided to go ahead and get myself a Corsair to use for mining. It's a new experience, so what the heck.

I'm doing "merit" mining, so the requirements are a bit different than what I'd put together for a normal mining ship. To get merits for mining you have to mine and sell in the same system. Demand for the various metals and ores tends to be quite small, so you don't really want or need to mine large quantities.

I bought and outfitted a Corsair, and set it up for both laser mining and core mining, because either one will work and I might as well be flexible.

My first mining run went well enough. I found the ship to be rather ponderous feeling, even though it's a medium ship. It's not very maneuverable, at least not with standard thrusters. Maybe dirty drives would help some. But it actually feels a lot like mining in my Cutter.

I dislike the cockpit view. It's not completely terrible, but it's kind of restricted. It reminds me of the iCourier. I suppose the Corsair is more intended as a combat ship. I think the ship is rather ugly, too.

Anyway, it did the job and I returned with a bit of platinum, gold, and silver. I wasn't really sure which stuff I should keep. I guess Osmium would have been good to keep, but I didn't. I'll have to research that a bit more.

I sold the stuff at a local planetary settlement, and was rewarded with some credits and merits, so it all worked. I'll have to refine my methods a bit, but it's something different to do at least.

The initial build I'm using:

Yeah, I'd put it in your Mandalay. My Krait MKII is for mining, still about 24Ly. Of course I'm not mining these days so having a high-end module in a ship that is just sitting isn't practical.
The swap got me a good 5Ly on the Mandalay while only dropping maybe 3Ly on the Krait so that felt quite efficient.
The CGs are of the pick only one variety again, so if picking the “princess” to defend you can only help against one of the attackers but it isn’t a three way fight as the guys are fighting each other.

Apparently it is Power Play Conflict Zones which means no ground forces but the CZs are within friendly fire range of the station which will return fire if hit which is probably going to hurt all the way to the rebuy screen.

Not sure that I am going to fly back again for this one.
It's saying you can attack both Archer's and Rui's forces if you sign up with Aisling. Though I've only tried down in Gondul attacking Rui's guys. Two spongey battles scraped me into the top 75%. It seemed like the best way to play the CG with the least damage to either Fed or Empire rank/rep.

All three systems are medium intensity CZs only. I'm not sure if that differs if you fight the Feds or Empire.

And I'm pretty sure I hit the megaship a couple of times without any dire consequences.
<sigh> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/corsair-coming-out-of-arx-access.638961/
Yesterday morning, I started that thread with the question about the Corsair.
This morning, someone posted the news that the Corsair is available for Arxes Credits now.
This lunch break, I fired up ED to buy and A-rate a Corsair, then I discovered that the only way to get a green paintjob is to buy a ship kit for 10080 Arxes - and I have 10070 Arxes on that account.
Anyway, to do:
  • buy Arx
  • buy the ship kit
  • cheese some engineering mats
  • fly over to the Guardians to get a module blueprint and some mats (I'll use the Cobra for that one)
  • engineer the hell out of that build, then go on to dominate some CG CZs
  • pack a picnic basket, then go camping in a Titan site and wait for drive components.
Nice.

I'd just got to Shinrarta after my own cheesing and didn't think to check the shipyard while outfitting the Mandalay and Krait. I've not touched the Corsair for now but will likely test it as part of the CG.
Not having a lot of luck on this exploration journey. So far, all the systems I've gone to have already been discovered. On top of that, there's been a distinct dearth of biologicals at all, let alone finding tectonicas.

@Ashnak

Funny you should mention ship kits and paintjobs! I had some ARX over so I also splashed out on some stuffs just now:

I like the kit, but I'm not married to the paint job. That'll need changing.
The yellow barrells are a little strange. Are you expecting to bump into a carcharodon carcharias?

Yeah, I found the cockpit view weird. I've only seen it via the hanger, and maybe extensive recent use of the Mandalay spoiled me, but I immediately switched to the Krait and felt less claustrophobic.

I always assumed it would be restrictive though and wondered how they'd make it work.

Hi All :)

Osmium is very, very handy. ;)
Quite a lot of stations I've been to to sell off Platinum, Monazite and some other metals and the rarer minerals have on their source or supply trade mission boards Osmium, which can fetch quite high pay outs. Obviously they will state 'Mine so many quantities of Osmium etc.'
If I'm out mining Platinum I usually find in those hot spots (but not always) plenty of sub-surface Osmium and sometimes Osmium mixed in with the laser mined asteroid stuff.

I think being allied to those stations factions contribute to the higher pay outs, but naturally you're going to eventually get the allied status the more you trade at the station.
If you spend some time at each of these stations over a period these missions can sometimes pop up quite regularly, so it's worth having a large stock of Osmium especially aboard your carrier if you've got one.

Hi :)
Well I decided to go ahead and get myself a Corsair to use for mining. It's a new experience, so what the heck.

I very nearly bought one last week, but it's that unusual and prominent 'nose' / 'beak' whatever you'd like to call it that just put me off! :D...so I didn't spend any of my ARX funds.

Hi :)

It looks like a Toucan.
Yeah 🤭, I remember when the design was first revealed it was stated by some posters to resemble that!....and it was remarked that it should have been called that instead of the Corsair. :)
I suppose it's a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it! :D...nowt really wrong with the design, it's certainly different from most of the other ships, I'm just trying to picture it with more of a 'ducks' beak design, daft as that statement is, the 'flow' or blend in of the graphics might be more aesthetic?

Okay, I'm just docked at a station to buy some emergency power cells, but there isn't a Corsair available in this shipyard. I've just noticed it's for sale for roughly 79 million credits now though so I might take a trip to Shinrarta sometime this weekend.
I'm trying to get myself sorted out to go out on a exploration trip, but I keep getting distracted by various stuff.

Incidentally, while I was reading a thread about the Panther Clipper 2 Decal, the thought occurred to me...I'm surprised nobody's started a 'Panther Clipper 2' owners club topic already in the 'Ships and Engineers' sub forums.🤓

Jack :)

They're storage silos.

I put all my salad samples in there for later submissions to VG. They're also most excellent at storing organic matter from ravenous buglbaltter beasts and Arcturian Megadonkies.

Incidentally, whilst pootlling and meandering aimlessly about on this not-so-deep space exploration trip, it appears I've wandered over into the Sanguineous Rim. Fancy that. I wasn't intending to go this far...

BTW, I like the name of your ship, maybe Pterodactyl face might have worked too.
Haha, well for some reason my Alt CMDR is naming all his ships Monkey-something. I have Monkey Shines (Cobra MKV), Monkey Business (Mandalay), and now Monkey Face (Corsair). I have no idea why, but it amuses me. I guess that's why. :)

Took the Corsair out Core mining today because I learned that mining/selling in a system that your power is Undermining gives more merits, and I found a system that is owned by Zemina Torval and being undermined by Aisling (which is the Power I'm aligned with). There's only Rocky and Icy rings available in the system (ICZ NN-T c3-31) so I figured I'd try some Core mining in a rocky ring.

The Corsair handled better than I expected in the Core miner role. It has good lateral and vertical thrusters, and I was able to maneuver around the asteroids easily.

I didn't have a lot of time, but I found a couple of Alexandrite cores and one Benetoite, and came back with 24T of Alexandrite and 13 of Benetoite, so not a huge amount. Even so, I got more merits for doing that then I did for the laser mining I did the other day in a Fortified system. Powerplay is kind of weird.

Anyway, I had fun and made over 11,000 merits, and another rank in Powerplay. Credits-wise it was only 8.6 million, so pretty low on that, but I wasn't really doing it for credits.

My feelings about the Corsair are ok. I like it, mostly. It flies well. The cockpit is the worst thing about it, for me. It's serviceable, but the view annoys me and the metal rings that hold the glass are big and ugly. I also wish it had one more internal slot, maybe a size 4, for a fuel scoop, not that I really need one for doing merit mining (there's very little travel required). But I'd still like to have one :)

I'll be keeping it. It works for what I need it to do.

So I have succumbed to temptation, twice!

  1. I have set off to join in the CG for whichever side is likely to give me most weapons, or maybe one for other reasons.
  2. I am travelling there in this partially finished Corsair bought and equipped at a station in one of the colonies I am getting building supplies from for my own colony. I have some 38-39 jumps to go. It is named for Robert Shaws pirate ship in Scalawag.

Hi All :)

Yay!...it's raining here 🌧️....and a nice steady downpour too, I can almost hear my garden breathing a sigh of relief....first bit of real rain we've had for weeks in the daytime.

Okay, I too have just bought a Corsair with credits at Jameson's (y), 'A' rated as standard most of the modules as well, but I'll see if I can replace some of them with some engineered ones I've got kicking around sometime, and take it for a spin.

I'm taking some final commodities to an installation build on one of the planets in my claimed system, then I'm intending (finally:rolleyes:) to go out for a bit of exploration, heading in the general direction of Hawking's Gap I think.
I've just checked on the Galactic map, the furthest player claimed systems out that way as far as I can make out is the SWOILZ AC-O (or is it zero?) C9-5 System. I'm also just wondering what are the farthest claimed systems out from the bubble at the moment...do any of you know?...I think there's a general trend for claimed systems to be heading out towards Colonia?...but everything's a bit scattered about now as far as I can make out so it's confusing me!

Edited for grammar.

Jack :)
