Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Agreed. And I find drive assist off makes it easier to control.

Took me a while to realise that! Yes, it certainly does - much more responsive. It is easy to over-steer if you get over-entusiastic at speed in that mode; personally, I like that :D

I always thought it was a bad move to call it "Drive assist" because it isn't it does nothing for the stability, it doesn't help (Like flight assist does) with mitigating roll, etc. It's just affecting how the throttle works.
Drive assist off simply means that the throttle in the SRV behaves like a normal gas pedal in a car - the more gas (throttle) you give, the more power you're transfering to the wheels.
Drive assist on on the other hand behaves like kind of a weird cruise control. The throttle position doesn't corelate with power to the wheels but directly to a certain speed the SRV is moving at. I think it's really weird and generally unhelpful.

I often wondered exactly what it was that it was doing. I could never work it out, I assumed it was what helped the thrusters apply the right amount of force to help with the different g-force environments it was in, but obviously not!

If only there was some sort of manual where one could read this sort of stuff ;)

I have found Drive Assist to be helpful in sometimes -- setting a constant throttle works on very uneven ground (if you go slow enough) and can allow you to let the SRV cruise along, almost hands off, while you look at other stuff. I use it when I feel lazy, or just don't want to bother with the constant speed up/slow down of the non-assisted mode.

So I disagree that it's useless. It has its niche :)

Well, yeah. If you use it strictly as a cruise control, yes. It has its uses. But as a "drive assist" it doesn't make much sense.

Though it MAY be useful if you're using just "preset thrust" (12.5% steps) bindings on your keyboard. In which case... okay that's probably the intended use for it.
Okay.

Can you burn it off by heating up the ship? I know nothing about the gunk, xeno or other forms.

Turn silent running on and boost. You’ll heat up and start to burn off the goo. Heatsinks are good to quickly get temperature back down whilst you switch off silent running and get your shields back online.

It hurts even to talk about ED right now. Still no PC until sometime tomorrow and I’m really missing it!

Hit 3, arrow to deploy. That's how mine works. Then, you can have much fun in trying to get arsenic and selenium. Oh the joy...

Still haven't hit up the crashed Anacondas?

Yes, you'll get an alert when it's done.
It's at like 200% heat iirc.

I haven't yet but it's on my to do list. I think I have the location somewhere... perhaps that'll be my job for later this evening if all goes well.

I get slightly more variety at Orrere than the others, but that's the worst for driving/collecting, by far.
The Bug Killer gives data too, but Jameson's Cobra gives the same data slightly faster.

Make sure to scan any data points so you can return more easily by finding it on the nav panel.
The ship at Orrere is a little tricky to scan.

I ran into a pulsar cone by accident earlier. Worrying loss of control but we came through it OK in the end.

Also, my Clipper landed at a planet base using the DC. As it hit the pad, COVAS informed me my hull had been compromised. I shall pay a visit to coder who programmed my DC and have words.

I really wish I had a video of my Cutter being mangled by the DC!
It made a great bunch of sounds scraping the outside of the Orbis station.

I’m upgrading the cpu and gpu. This game’s hooks are so deep now I know VR is inevitable....even if it’s the only game I use VR for. Still debating which system to go for, though both the Vive sets are out of the running.

I love the fact at Jameson’s you can park up and scan all points from the same place. I can’t remember which system the Bug Killer is in but that’s my preferred Raw material pick up point, nice and flat. Though I was daft enough to xeno scan a Thargoid in my feebly shielded Asp last time I was there and failed to make it out. My first rebuy screen since dumping my alt account into the ground after flying back from BP - I’d forgotten to turn my shields back on and not taken note of the higher G as I came in to land.

Stupid mistakes and daft decisions will get you every time :)

somewhat and somewhat not - because the time is too short to even recognize it - this moment the DC is aligning the ship to the slot and starts entering the slot - the next moment I see "under attack" and authorities shoot at me. And even if there is nothing in the way - a clear path through the slot - and bang, happens again. Or not. There is no real pattern - and it is rare enough, that maybe no one took the time to complain about it or to wonder why that happens - but I do, it is really annoying.

I used DC for long time, because I had problem with manual docking. Sometimes it missed the mail slot, but never caused to station open fire. Then I started manual docking in my small/medium ships. Right now I have no problem to docking even my Cutter. Not harder than with smaller ships.
