Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Never seen one of these before.

Also seems to be highly inbred. Feels like I have to travel half the planet to find enough genetic diversity...
(I suppose, more seriously speaking, the distance you have to travel seems to be directly proportional to the size of the organism.)

Question for all you lovely CMDR's.

How do you use EDDiscovery, if at all?

To clarify, I mean what do you use it for - I know how it actually works :D I'm just trying to figure out what it's best for.
Hold on a moment - I told a lie.

I DO use EDDiscovery as I downloaded the app quite a while back. In fact it's the first thing I load in every time before I load the game each time! Not sure why I forgot...

As for what it's good for, I think it's probably good for quite a few things, but it's useful to keep an ongoing log of what you're doing. It also tells EDSM exactly where you are in the galaxy at all times, so if, for example you want to find the nearest station to where you are, (which is one I use quite a bit) EDSM can tell you straight away once you've logged in there.

(It possibly tells Inara as well about some data, not sure but every time I go into Inara to say, look for the location of ships or modules for sale, I have to tell Inara where I am.)

I must admit though that I'm nothing like up to speed with every single thing you can use EDDiscovery for, but this screenshot I just took of this section of my app might give you an idea:

The main thing I look at when I'm out exploring is the "Visited Stars" box at bottom right. It's a up-to-date ongoing log of where you've been and the value of all systems and bodies you've discovered and/or mapped.

I don't think it's that easy. Last thing I scanned was some conchas, only growing in a few locations on that planet - but I could get all three samples in a single small(-ish) cleft.

And I'm seriously considering turning back to Colonia and swapping the Phantom for a DBX for all this groundwork. Trying to find a landing spot for the pancake can be worse than waiting for the DBX to refuel.

Yeah, sometimes it can be infuriatingly hard to find a landing spot on a severely mountainous area.

(Another infuriating thing can be when bacterial colonies are almost the same color as the ground, making them almost impossible to see... Well, I suppose it can be thought of as a survival mechanism.)

Re EDDIscovery - I just noticed that if you click on the "Organic Scans" box it gives you an ongoing log showing the value of all the plants you've scanned. Here's the top page of what I'm doing right now:

Btw the screenshot in my previous post was before the latest version taking in Update 14. The above screenshot is after I downloaded and installed the latest version.

Thanks all for your insights on EDD - I must be underusing it :D

That's nifty - I've not looked at that popout. Ta!

On top of being able to browse through your flight log, which i deem necessary (other q how often necessary, once a month or twice a day), so you can have it just installed (- a couple of GB of SSD) or always running (- a couple of GB of RAM, RAM heavy, 2+ GB in my case but i use a lot of tabs)...

A lot of strength to it gives the fact that it's separate from your browser statistics tool with browser built in (ok that was complicated, i'll elaborate).

  • Separate whole History (heavy) and Journal (say for this quarter) tabs.
  • Separate Inara, Spansh and else tabs so they're not in your browser.
  • Expedition tab i found cool for planning your carrier journey - you can copy-paste Sys names if you're going far.
  • Statistics tab as tool to see even reacher statistics, that way i know that my Asp Scout recently climbed to top 5 per ly travelled, slightly outrunning my Cobra.
  • And an amount of little, but useful things, like Material Trader (3 virtual material traders in your pocket, shows in 1 picture if you're yet ok with manufactured overall and Pharmaceutical Isolators in particular or you need to get them), Organic Scans (lists everything scanned), Screenshots (pictures and where and when taken), Carrier tab (goes as far as communicating that i'm nearly out of fixed medium cannons in my outfitting + that a lonely ton of Void Opals was apparently sold to me at 18k credits at some point and i don't know why), separate bookmarks, that i hope to use once to get out of the game some bookmarks, which would otherwise get wasted when the cap (was it 128?) reached...

Re. EDD usage:

I always have it running when playing ED, no matter what I am doing in game. There are whole vast areas of EDD that I have never used but those that I do, are well worth it.

When exploring I have the EDD browser open on my iPad with the scan page open - really useful for noting terraformables and whether there are any features on a body.

Generally, the history, scan page and materials count are my most used and of course the automatic screenshot management is always working. Ships and stored modules comes in handy too, I don't do missions much any more but EDD missions list was dead handy for that. I could use lots of other features but don't.

BTW It also has carrier-based features too now, I know nothing about that.

Wow, never had it that bad, even if I've arrived in a few systems through one of the stars... o_O
This isn't the first time it's happened, last time I fared better, this time I popped my only two heatsinks and am now out (no mats to make more). I saw the stars flash by when I exited the conduit, I knew immediately I was in trouble and with a smaller faster turning ship, I'm convinced, I would have taken less damage. It was a very snaky path out all the while cussing up a storm and dumping coolant. 🤷‍♂️

Made me thinking, heatsink is the only thing required for an Explorer that needs manufactured for synthesis. Easy to get, 1 Biotech Conductor trades for 81 Basic Conductors or 27 Heat Conductor Wirings, so a couple of missions and you're full - but if you're out of them in the black, then no heatsinks possible... You can refill AFM with raw still. Popping even between 2 stars i felt scary...

Yes, about 45,000 to 50,000 Ly from the bubble, I can usually refill at DSSA carriers though.

I use it or EDMC* to pass info to EDSM, EDDB and Inara and to convert in game pictures to something more compact and with a more useful name.

I was using it recently to work out a bit more detail about my exobiology progress prior to U14 gate.

But to be honest I am wasting most of its potential.

*Currently I seem to be using them on alternate days.
