Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

It really depends on what sort of terrain you're on. It will only land where the auto-land is capable of landing. So if you have unstable or rocky / hilly terrain around you, it's not going to land there.
I was standing on a flat plane, big enough to land a large ship comfortably. No rocks or other obstacles. And the ship decided to land far away on a small patch in uneven terrain, instead.
And not long ago, I had a Type 6 land in a fumarole field of quite high density right behind me, about 150 meters away. It could also have landed on a free plane about a kilometer away. And it did that not just once.

I have Comcast for internet here (West Coast USA), and they recently sent me a new router/gateway that they said would improve my service, and give me more speed. No extra cost. Installation was easy.

Needless to say, I'm rather pleased with this.

What am I up to today? Quitting, that's what.
I was 5 systems from the end of a 25 system mini road to riches, in uninhabited system when I get interdicted and bounced by a swarms of things which destroyed me.
Was playing in Mobious private group, on way to HIP 19894, got hit in COL 285 Sector ML-E B 12-2.
'Destroyed by Unknown'
So lost all my collected data and my ship (Can rebuy but really don't feel like it right now).
No warnings of any danger in the system, just destroyed.
Is this someone's idea of fun?
Wasted best part of a week - screw this game.
Sorry to hear it. I guess you haven't been paying attention to the war?

It used to be safe just jumping around the bubble, but not any more. The Thargoids are on a rampage.

Nowadays it's best to check that your route doesn't take you through their systems, cuz they own those places and they are not friendly.

If you do decide to go to any of those systems, do some research first. It's safe enough if your ship is ready to either flee (gotta be very fast) or fight (gotta be very strong and you need to know what you're doing).

Otherwise, steer clear.

Good luck out there!

I was waiting for the carrier to jump so I thought I'd try the on-foot tutorial again. It was a complete nightmare when I first tried it. This time it was a cakewalk. Dare I say my on-foot combat has improved? :D
Yes I've done it over as well. I ran out the back way when the enemies landed, and picked them off one by one without them ever even seeing me. It was a breeze :)

The first time I died several times trying to stupidly fight them in the open, all at once. Experience counts!

OK, thanks for the info - my bad.
Trouble is, you get into a routine jumping on a RtR - load the next system into the search bar, click and go - didn't notice the Thargoid activity.
Well I'll take a rest for a while - still devastated but like you say, my stupid fault.
You warriors, get these frikin Thargoids sorted out so us wimps can go about their business :)
And that is another problem of doing a Road to Riches type trip things become too routine.

When you do get back from your rest remember that as you didn’t sell any of the data you lost you can repeat the run and get it back.
But do consider using a very fast ship, if it happens again and you can get to more than 550 you will outrun most Thargoids but might pick up some minor damage doing it corrosion can be removed by getting to >150% heat silent running and boost will do that for you.

Everybody has given you good advice, there is no such thing as a stupid question, hang out in this thread or start your own, but keep asking questions. If you want riches, grab a Krait Mk II and engineer it for exploration, if you have Odyssey, make sure you have an Artimes suit for hunting biosigns, that's where the money is right now.

Dealing with the Thargoids is upper echelon stuff and requires mucho combat experience and engineering, people in the forum will help you setup an exploration ship. Watch out for old utube videos, a lot of them need to be deleted because their so old. Good luck and don't get discouraged, congrats on leaving the sandbox. (y)

That's pretty dang fast, we had Comcast with similar speeds. But hey, free internet is a good thing (I hope).

I remember when the advice for explorers was to take a break before they got back into the bubble so that they would be alert and fresh enough to deal with the pirate menace of the bubble that was especially strong at the edge, there even used to be a group of players you could wing up with who would escort you to a Station where you could safely sell your months of exploration data.

Nope. Not a bit. I did it after they nerfed it into the dirt I think. You don't get anywhere near the XP you used to get for them. I've had better results just doing regular pirate massacre missions. I can kill 40 to 50 pirates and get 2 to 3%. I kill an equal amount of Scouts I get absolutely nothing.

I make a lot more money killing pirates as well. They've made fighting scouts absolutely worthless.
Mmm, I'm thinking something has changed very recently. It has been at least a few weeks since I last fought scouts. Its a real shame if they nerfed combat rank gain, as that was always a secondary motivation for fighting scouts.

Yes I've been thinking of having another go at that one as well, now I've done lots of high on-foot CZs and got a fair amount of practice in. I don't have the super-dooper arsenal of weapons that you have (all only up to grade 3) but I still manage to do fairly well. :p

It would also give me a chance to relearn all this stuff about pinching things from settlements and whatnot, as I may have a go at some missions like that at some point when I'm back in the bubble.

So I'm just supposed to instinctivly know that information am I?
If you enter a city you don't know and get attacked in a really rough area, did you instinctively know it was a rough area before you went there?
Never forget this game is attempting to simulate a civilisation lived among the stars and it doesn't hold your hand and tell you want to do. Remember it's called Elite Dangerous, not Elite Safe ;)
We all mess up like this sometimes. Ask me why I insist on 662MJ shields on my exploration ship... Ask me what happened when I decided to use it to get to HIP 22460 quickly and watch other commanders fight Thargoid interceptors before the Proteus Wave was activated...
These events can be frustrating, but I taught myself to revel in my failures in this game and learn and do better (like 662MJ shields on my Phantom) to succeed next time.

My new system has had Windows 11 on it since day one. Never had an issue with anything at all.

Then again, it was built with Windows 11 in mind, so...
I finally went for the Windows 11 upgrade on my gaming laptop yesterday. Elite Dangerous started up fine as before but I have not had time to play and check out performance properly. The machine itself seems to be respond to stuff a bit quicker, but my mind could be playing tricks on me.

I'm really interested to hear how ED plays. You may have mentioned it before but what are your system specs? Did you go for the "full upgrade" that keeps all your files, apps and drivers? Did you need to reinstall any stuff? Sorry for the questions deluge! :D

I think it's generally a bad idea to keep drivers when swapping from one O.S to the next.

Better use Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode, uninstall and clean the directory and do a full fresh driver install, the only time I didn't do it I had bad 3D redraw with Odyssey, some planets bits were twisted or missing, I even traveled through one to get to a ground station from below...

Problem solved with a clean install of the same driver (AMD Adrenalin 23.2.1 (WHQL).

Windows 11 doesn't seems faster only smoother perhaps... What Windows 11 did for me is to support 64GB of RAM, Windows 10 is limited to 32GB, I use a Cl14 B.Die G Skill kit, i'm not going to run out of RAM any time soon.

A bit of warning, I had some messages from AMD through their AMD Software Adrenalin Edition messaging, they are warning us that Microsoft replaces their native drivers by their own, so I reinstalled everything first thing after Windows 11 fresh instal, including Realtek Audio drivers for my Motherboard.
