Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

To be fair the movie was actually called Cast Away - Tom Hanks survives a crash, is marooned on an island and finds a football, paints a face on it and of course it was Wilson.

Ah. I see. Maybe the Wilson that rang this bell hailed from there, too...

Never seen that but in the post that started this you will see this:

which relates to the Wilson ball in the movie as per Hanks' hamming it up elsewhere:

Oh, and my apologies - it wasn't a football, it was a volleyball ball. (I suppose an American plane carrying a soccer ball would have been stretching credibility too far. ;) )

I was contemplating heading back to that bugged CZ from yesterday to see if the bug persisted over relogs. In the end, I've decided to head somewhere else.

Whilst the payout was tempting and would slightly increase my rate of experience gain, it was, ultimately, quite boring to do. Besides, the zone wasn't winnable and I'd have to Apex out and... well, it all just didn't appeal.

So I've decided to a couple of "real" CZ's and then, if I'm still in the mood, head out to The Formidine Rift. I'm going to need ~4k tons of tritium for the round trip so I'll be splashing a little cash. However, as I've never been, it could provide some nice discoveries and codex entries.

I still wish tritium mining was more productive... hey ho.

Recommend taking quite a bit more than that if you want to make it to the Rift region itself - i had about 5000 Tritium stock and made it a bit past the Heart&Soul nebulae (carrier was at furthest about 8000LY from Sol iirc) - admittedly this wasn’t in a straight line, having headed towards the Bubble Nebula, then back a bit towards IC 1805, before heading for the “Formidine Alpha Site”, which is beyond Heart&Soul, but still within the Elysian Shore region… the Formidine Rift region itself is quite a few more 1000LY on from there… suggest taking at least 20% more fuel than you need, to allow you to hop about and explore while you’re there - it’s quite a way out to the Zurara if you’re keen to visit it - i didn’t go that far as i didn’t have enough Tritium stock on board.

Good call. I'll buy more :D Thanks!

Best to take more than enough to get there and back, as well as some extra - exploration always leads to… more exploration :)

…i would have continued on to the Zurara, but the planned trip was to Heart&Soul - managed to stretch it by ship-hopping another 2500LY, but if i had taken the FC into the Rift itself, it would probably still be there, keeping the old mega-ship company ;]

Recommend visiting NGC 7822 on the way - it’s only about 2500LY from Sol and is quite awesome, with some very interesting systems… please say hi to the folkes at the Gorgon Research Centre - i promise i will settle my bar tab next time i drop by… :D

…oh, and then further towards Heart&Soul, there is the IC 1805 stellar cluster, with many type O giants - many interesting systems there, with this one possibly the most spectacular of all:

I have tritium paranoia. When I went to Colonia and Rackham Peak, I was lugging 10k+ each way.

Speaking of bugged CZs, I've come across a couple recently such as this one in which all NPCs, both friendly and enemy, just stand around doing nothing:

CZ 05.png

The enemy ones will fire at me if I come in sight but won't run towards me or run anywhere else. Also I'll get no "assist" kills by shooting at enemies together with my NPC teammates because I have to go hunting for the enemies that are just standing around all by myself. :sneaky:

Another problem I've had is the Vulture dropship arrived above the CZ but didn't drop anyone out and just sat there, so I exited to the main menu, then went back in, but found myself on-foot on the planet out in the middle of nowhere somewhere, with the CZ nowhere to be seen so I had to exit, then go back in Horizons which put me back in my ship in the departing station...

These create quite a problem if there are 2 sharpshooters in a group. Only one shot is enough to take out your shields, a second will kill you. I find the best way is, when they're grouped and not moving (per this bug, which I had yesterday) is to find a snipe point behind something *. You can strafe them but need to be quick. Using grenades is also a viable tactic - but those sharpshooters can be a real headache, bugged or not

*preferably elevated

Edit to add: I'm still getting used to this new keyboard and making loads of typos! :D I'll be editing a lot methinks! (The half-height enter key is a headache atm)

The bug of NPC combatants being rooted to the spot is just ludicrous, it's been going on so long and is so prevalent, have FDev even said they're addressing it? Twitch Streams are ridiculous when the poor streamer has to deal with it (and also the CZ vanishing-scores, control points, etc) and makes the game look rubbish to prospective buyers. Are FDev content with that?

Yes I had that problem with sharpshooters as well but managed to kill a couple by hiding behind something, then moving slightly so just a bit of the enemy was visible. Then took careful aim and took out the shields, then switched weapons to do the kill.

That all said though, I'd much prefer it if the CZ was working properly, so I soon got fed up with that and went elsewhere to find another CZ!

Yes, it can get boring. But, if you can stand the "grind" the payouts are (relatively) enormous:

Crikey! I guess that since the enemy NPC isn't going to be moving out of the way, using a Manticore Executioner should do the trick. In that one in my screenshot though I didn't have one in my loadout but maybe next time I'm in one of those, I'll intentionally get "critically injured," so I can change my loadout before respawning.

EDIT: For the first time since my previous stint in 2015, my trade rank has gone up and I'm now Broker. Using the carrier to take lots of rares around is quite profitable!

For a change of pace and because my surveying of this system had thrown up such a variety of Hotspots I have called in my carrier and switched to my Python to try out mining in the black.

I have to say it feels very relaxing to mine with no one else around especially no pirates. I had a crash to desktop at one point and the only issue was flying back in to restart.

The Python is one of the ships that I had previously changed to HUD colours on including those of the Pulse Wave Scanner which I had forgotten so came as a surprise but it seemed clearer than the default.

The mining is going well so tomorrow I should have filled the hold and then will head of for a different type of hopefully high value hotspot, what passes for the plan is to get a load from as many as I can before the itchy feet get me heading off for more exploration.

Oh yes that Amphora plant I found that wasn’t in the app paid 1.66 MCr, happily I found some 19 MCr Stratum Tectonicus as a first discovery so greed was satisfied.

Believe it or not, that is actually recommended in survival training. Not specifically the volleyball but just anything. Set it up as a "friend" and talk to it. This was experience from the old incidents of Japanese soldiers living in the jungles refusing to surrender after WWII. From what was gathered, if you don't use your language skills often enough, they will atrophy, so if you don't keep talking, even to imaginary friends, once you are rescued, you'll end up having communications problems later, i.e being unable to talk to people.

You changed the HUD colours on the Python only? What API are you using for that?

I've used EDHM to mod my HUD to a nice relaxing blue but it does that for all ships rather than just one.

And, yes, mining in the black is very Zen. I never mine where there are other ships or the likelyhood of pirates.

EDIT: if it's platinum you are after, I have good spot not too far out. I can ping you a DM if you want it - it's not an overlap of two or more, just a single, but it boosted my funds on a regular basis.

So, from where I am, it'll be 20 carrier jumps to the edge of The Formidine Rift. I have 6,500 tons of tritium in store and a further 1,000 in the depot. This should leave me a few spare jumps to hop around a bit with.

The question now is: do I go now or at a later point? According to Spansh, the trip is going to take 7 hours or so and my plan is not to stop or be distracted until I get to the sector.

I am using the EDHM-UI by BlueMystical which lets you set up a hUD for each ship in your hanger. It is a front end for EDHM and can add plugins.

I hadn’t realised that I was tense when mining in the bubble until I mined out here, now I think I will have to treat mining here as like flying the Dolphin, nice but could lead to bad habits.

Not particularly it was just that there were so many different types of Hotspot in the rings of this planet many of which seemed to have both a good average price and at some point a very good highest price (according to Inara) that I thought I would speculate by trying to pick up a hundred tons or so of each one, we’ll probably only most of them.

7500t? That should do it! :]

My preferred way too indeed ^^

Found one in a metallic ring over the weekend that filled the 256t hold quite nicely - if only there was an equivalent for Tritium… ;]
