Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Aye, I have an L-6 that I use in the standard non-frozen CZs and it's a great weapon imo - much prefer it to the executioner. I prefer the executioner for the frozen ones though as the magazine holds lots more (at least, it does in my case with my G3 one. Maybe a fully upgraded L-6 with all the mods holds quite a bit more and I'd imagine you have one of those. ;) )

It was definitely more challenging (but interesting^) to play the CG High CZ with my Artemis "Assassin" build and Executioner, as opposed to a more traditional Dom/Ape/Ar-50 CZ loadout - its real advantage is being able to almost fly about in low gravity, but in 1.1G that advantage was significantly reduced - can't get up on to high sniping towers, though could jump two levels to the nearest roof... i died at least three times in one round with the non-frozen targets ;]

Lawks, no. I don't do open.
Yesterday, on my way turn in my combat bonds, I had the rare opportunity to watch a commander's ship (anaconda???) enter the large station in Pichch, being fired on all the way, blowing up several ships, then leaving the station...and coming after me...I got away with approx. 32% of my hull. It was all very exciting...

Other than that, I haven't had any issues with gankers at all in that system. I've been doing the on-foot High Intensity CZ since Friday:

I also added several commanders as new friends, whether we were on the same side or not.

I love Open - the element of the unknown lifts the whole game, for me, and have had some fun encounters. Doing Guardian ruins when a French commander turned up, messaging in French and then solving it together was a high point. Have had far more players help me than hinder me. And squadron wars over territory are a hoot.
I am pretty sure that open can be a lot of fun. The only time I have been in open so far was when I needed the help of the fuel rats.
But I think once I have refurbished my room and set up the new PC (whenever that may be), after accomodating myself to Oddyssey, I might open the door every once in a while.

I literally don't think of it as Open, any more, it's just the game. I fly Open all the time including when not with squadron members. Granted I have pretty hefty engineering and budget - so can either fight or run effectively should I need to - but frankly I don't need it. Can't remember the last time I was attacked, happy to fly in and out of engineers' bases in my little Asp Scout and don't sweat. Just makes it feel more alive to me. Anyway, am rambling and repeating, but I'd certainly recommend it. I have way more issue with other players in other games than I ever have in ED. We're a nice bunch, overall.

An unwritten rule of player faction BGS game play is that you do it in open so that your opponent has a chance to counter what you are doing... you know, shoot you.
It adds some excitement, especially if you are trying to be discreet.
I only play solo if I don't want to be interrupted in what I'm doing e.g. engineering grind, returning from exploration.

That is fair enough but as I don’t play the BGS as a game it isn’t a consideration for my play mode choices.

Since I got my new laptop last year and can run at decent framerates I have been playing in Open a lot more.
But finding someone in a gank boat at Hutton Orbital shooting ships taking part in the Christmas giveaway after they have finished a 90+ minute cruise didn’t make me all that much more enthusiastic about open play and the people who play there.
