Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

And FINALLY - the first mod goes on the Dominator Suit.

Fun fact: Youtube will not play anything above 1080p for free accounts, so capturing in any format above that is a complete waste of time and effort. Even when you upload a 2k or 4k video, it is downscaled to 1080 unless you have a premium account.

I've always just used the built in Windows recorder. It's always done just fine.

I can view my 1440 uploads at 1440 when not logged in to the youtube.

I just checked this on my laptop and that was able to view my 1440 uploads at 1440. This video for example:

Wasn't that an experiment they gave up on?
The last I read from Google about 8 months ago was that it works a lot like any other streaming service: if you have the basic or free plan, you don't get anything but 1080p max. In order to actually see anything in 2k or 4k, you have to have the premium service.

If you do not have the premium service, you can still upload 2 and 4 k video, but you'll never see it. Only people with premium accounts will. So unless you have a premium account, it's an exercise in futility to upload anything beyond 1080.

In fact, even if you do have a premium account, it's still pretty worthless because 99% of the people that are going to watch your videos are doing it for free, and of them most are on devices that don't support 2k or 4k to begin with.

It's wasted time and effort for the vast majority of people on the internet.

I also seem to remember that 4k video gets a better encoding even at 1k resolution.

YouTube doesn't chose the encodings, you do. Here's the recommended list.

....

I literally 2 posts above that, gave evidence to show that you are wrong ...

This limitation appears to relate to YouTube's "1080p PREMIUM" quality setting (ie: Full HD with high bitrate), which i can't view on my free/basic account - but i'm able to view up to 4K on desktop (both Mac & PC) and on mobile (phone / ipad) as long as the content itself is uploaded at that rez...

I have the same issue, It says I need a paid account, must be a North American thing. I envy the laws the European Union has for protecting consumers. America likes to keep the internet like the wild west.

Not just NA. Get it over here in Blighty too

I'm not paying for it either - not with the money they rake in. And those blimmin' adverts all the time. Thank the maker for ad blockers

I can't believe people saying you can't view youtube at higher than 1060 - I mean I often have 4K videos running to keep me company when flying in flight sim - so can people not actually view this in 4k for example? Railcowgirl Northern Lights :

I just don't believe people not on paid accounts (I am not) can't view these, I mean "jobbie", you can even view it in 4K in the embed on here.

I'm no expert on this stuff, in fact it's all new to me. But, I thought you need a monitor and correct cables that support those resolutions. I'm using an HDMI cable with a monitor that support's 1080p, I think YouTube might be trying to hoodwink me.

They are very very very very very much shoving people towards paying for their Youtube premium service, to the point where their original free service is becoming unusable between ad saturation, banning ad blockers, and removing features.

I'm no big youtuber so I might be wrong, but my understanding is that everything you upload gets re-encoded with parameters that are chosen by youtube.
Nope. All they do to it is compress the hell out of it, which is yet another reason that unless you have premium, anything above 1080 is a waste of time.

If you use an encoding they don't support, your video simply will not upload. Then again, this is North America. Things may be different in the EU.

Again, that doesn't matter. YOU are the only one that will see it. WE never will, unless we pay for a premium account. So what's the point in uploading your 4k videos when most people will only see it in 1080?

Edit to add: this site is a paid site that has 4k videos. Well, they SAY they're 4k and it displays 4k, but it really doesn't look as good as real 4k.
