Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Hi All :)

black/red out resistant mini me fighter pilots:ROFLMAO:
you could stick em in rc phantoms
would not like the job of naming 100 billion stars
you have to use a random name algorithm generator based on the fibonacci code methinks
666 are mine all mine niet ha ha:geek:
ist person to colonize every star in the manic monday pic above wins a paint job :ROFLMAO:

When I turned 60 some lady work colleagues knowing my interest in Astronomy bought me a 'Name That star' package, so 'in theory' I have my very own star named after me known as 'The Grandad ****** Star' co-ordinates ISD029786 (*blanked out portion is my real first name not a swear word btw!). One of the girls had recently lost her Grand father around that time and had 'adopted' me as her second Grandfather, even to this day. I'll be going to her wedding later on this year. 🥳
I doubted the authenticity of the star database package but hadn't the heart to tell them at the time, and anyway, it was a lovely thought as I'm sure it was bought in good faith. ;)

And also my theory that this area is specificaly rich of black holes...

There is / was an area that I found in Hawkins Gap that is a bit prolific with White Dwarfs, it seemed every other jump with my DBX was one!...that was before I obtained a Carrier, so it was quite some time ago. They were first discovery's by me, I did bookmark them all at one point, but soon ran out of bookmarks at the time! (since been deleted).

It seems Strontium Dog answered the construction question. His system is Sector XO-A B1 where I'm parked at the Dog House. Though he named it without the space. I'm trying to shame him into spending 6000 arx to change that.

I try to bookmark player systems as places of interest I may want to visit.

Colonisation does look interesting though. It's a nice option for people who like building type games. I used to enjoy things like Sim City, Civ, Alpha Centauri, and Outpost back in the olden times.

Though a nice thing about colonisation is that it seems to be self-sustainable after the initial week of grind. You can always come back to it in your own time. I'll likely give it a try during an upcoming week off I expect to have.

I must own up, I know where the Dog House is I was just being 'discrete' previously in not naming the actual system (and appearing puzzled :sneaky:) as I didn't know whether Strontium Dog wanted that to be common knowledge! :D

Whoops. I meant to quote you in the above post.

No problem, I've often done this myself. I've wondered why once you've posted something you can't then edit it and add another quote, I suppose it's a Forum safety measure or something.

Very nice. I'd like to rewatch that.

Ah, Babylon 5...I used to love watching those episodes back in the day.

quark just has me in stiches........
yea excellent series
doghouse one word (slang)

a doghouse hand would be a 2 an 7 in poker or on a mission and given a bad clansman radio frequency or simply in trouble with the wife
ie the missus has me in the doghouse atm
it has an interstellar factors to help you get out;)
(maybe its a more british term? or old one?)
though if spelled with space i think it still means the same or a kennel ( most dogs being sociable domesticated creatures would rather be in your house than stuck outside in a wooden box)

And there was me thinking you had an affinity with our canine friends! :D...(as in Dogs generally and Dog house was a reference to a Dog Kennel).
There are quite a number of forumites I notice that have their forum avatars with pictures of their cat or dog pets (I presumed) contained within them.
I've had a number of Dogs as pets (and a Cat) over the years, but after the last dog we had (broke my heart when she had to be put to 'sleep') she was a real character, we've not had another since. 🥲

What am I doing....to be honest not much with the game. I've got a largish shed to re-roof with roofing felt soon, and I aint' looking forward to it! ☹️...I've bought the felt, bought the adhesive, bought some flashing strip (I built the shed with one end adjoining to a brick garage) I just need a run of warmer and drier weather to start stripping the old felt off and fit the new stuff. I was going to make a start today.... Annnd.. it's raining here this morning. 😖

Ok, I'm rambling off topic again ...the game...I've got a few tons of colonisation station build commodities to offload somewhere as I'm on hold with station builds as I've run out of steam with that at the moment, and need a change and do something completely different. So if anybody wants some help with their station builds just let me know so's I can get rid of them....soon.
Here's a list.
CMM composites 72t
Super conductors 104t
Fruit & Veg 51t
Insulating Membrane 224t
Power Generators 61t
Computer components 112t
Aluminium 259t
Not much, but they might be useful.

Jack :)

as no one not even nasa has any right to grant permission to name a star any agency that does is valid in a sense🤷‍♂️
the SD starnaming certification body ;)
its just that nasa is a scientifically well known recognized institution.......
mankind is delusional to think he own's the "earth" tardigrades have lived trough three extinction level events.............
thay call it what sounds like "tiermeet or mat" i think :ROFLMAO:
we are only here to provide the micro plastic the next dominent species needs to evolve lol

btw ya i dont mind who knows who what etc about the dog house (i am usuallly at the bar there in open when eating or lazing etc )
my other station in the same sys under construction would be glad to have the cmm that would help thx
ya as for affinity with dogs i was baby sat by a completely trusted golden Retriever from birth i luv em
the dog house moniker kinda means both tbh
my nickname is dog in real life an i have an SD badge like scooby doo too lol

Just downloaded the latest version of EDDiscovery. During the install process, I (stupidly) changed the path of my database for it so now it's reading five years of entries. Oops.

I'm rather enjoying this (for me) prolonged journey of exploration deciding I wasn't really feeling pull of colonisation (yet?). Once I've done my stint (how long is a piece of string?) I may investigate.

if you ask me itsa lot of tooing &*froing
cheers

Oh those certificates are arguably a nothingburger sure but they are a lot of fun.

But to be fair, naming stars was a hot mess for centuries (or millennia in the case of the bright stars in the Zodiac) and quite unbelievably, it was only 2016 that the IAU sat down and said "let's sort this out." I listened to a fascinating podcast about what went into setting up that working group and how one of the motivating factors was actually removing some of the names named after various unpleasant characters.

So what you said there was true up until 2016, and now theoretically the IAU have the rights and nobody else does. However, in 9 years they've only managed to approve 497. Would be pretty cool to set up a grand tour of those come to think of it!

There's a spreadsheet, and a lot of them are HD and HIP and WD but there might be a bit of manual work to fill some gaps where the more obscure or really new catalogues aren't in the game.

They can't make telescopes small enough tho, tricky optics

I'm slightly confused.
Those engineers usually seem to have their ears on the ground in regards of what us commanders do. But the Professor still shows the distance of my last attempt at doing the 5kly, where I stopped short at 3900ly. But I'm now camping on moon C of the GGG I wanted to visit, which is 4900ly from Suhte.
What does the term "from the start" mean, anyway?

professor palin unlock requirment 5000ly away
from the system you were when in when you first ever played under the current commander...........(start)
took me months as i did not neutron as i did a discovery shorter hop jump trail.
i made the same journey in less than day in a modified mandy and using the neutron super highway recently (to claim ist footfall in the same ELW system@7000ly away)
of course one could always catch a sleeper to sag a or something if feeling lazy nowadays..............
an option not available back when i ist did it.
i just set off in a random direction way back when and said im not gona stop till i find an ELW.....
a sterling effort in an un engineered cobra, you can bett ya bottom socks i did the last leg of the return journey playing solo i wasn't about to get ganked and loose those ist discovery's before visiting a cartographics to sell.......
when i returned i was elite in discovery (fitting two afmu's was a life saver)

EDIT:
I forgot that the engineers only realize what is going on after a relog. Doh.
Yes, a few of them are like that and it seems a little immersion breaking to me.

Another thing with engineers is the application of experimental effects.

I know there are reasons why (which, of course, I can't remember at the moment :/ ) you have to go them to get applied, but I, in my opinion you understand, think you should be able to do remotely.

Another first for me.

I came across a metal rich planet with life - which I have never encountered before - so I had to go planetside and see what it was.

Turns out it was an "Amphora Plant". When I jumped out of the SRV in my eagerness, I was welcomed with the warning "suit thermal limit exceeded". Ruh roh. I made quick work of grabbing my samples before Something Bad Happened ™

I shot a few, just to be sure, and got some tungsten and iron.

Would any of you currently out doing bio etc mid letting me know if you are experiencing an annoying 14-16 second delay in disembarking from your ship please?

I have been mentioning this in another place and would be grateful for any feedback from others.

To me, this is not some server-load variation but a consistent annoying delay that seems to have started since the server mucking-about last week. A couple of people in-game have told me that everything is OK on space-stations (the usual few seconds) but that disembarking on planet surface and even at engineers they are also finding this delay
.

OK - Ignore that, my post below explains - all a frame rate limiter effect.

Are you exiting on planets, from your SRV, into player run space stations? I haven't been seeing this much lately, although I have once or twice. Not sure it's anything new but, in the past, if I didn't disembark almost immediately, it used to result in a black screen which forced me to log off.

Yeah, happens to me too:
Disembarking from my ship I can count 32 steps down - boarding I count 13 up (Planet-side) but a little less in a station.

SRV is almost the opposite - to leave it takes about 6 seconds and to reboard takes about 12 (which can be a pain in the thrusters when trying to get away from a gun toting angy mob!)
