Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Hi :)

Planet landing can induce a little eyeroll when I just need a quick in and out port, but one thing that irritates me is my 12 RAM Nvidia 3060 sounding like it's about to implode.

Just as a side note / observation on this, I've noticed when playing Elite say for example if I'm flying through space, or in other scenario's where I'm not actually docked anywhere, my GPU (And to a certain extent my CPU) temperatures hover around the middle 40's to 50c marks.
If I'm landed at a station for instance for any length of time or in some cases exited to the exit screen (not desktop) those temperatures creep up, both GPU & CPU sometimes nearer to 60c
I've never understood this as one would assume it would be the other way around. The temperatures at idle with the game not booted up obviously btw. drop to an average more in the 30 - 38c range (with an average room temp of 18 - 30c)
The CPU (AMD 7800x3d ) has an air cooled 2 fan 6 heatpipe cooler , GPU is a Sapphire Radeon rx 7700 Xt Nitro (3 fan) both in a large Coolermaster Haf X case (just for reference).
So basically what I'm saying is on average my computer runs slightly cooler when playing Elite normally.🤨
I'm docked at a station at the moment and I'm just checking, GPU is around 59c and CPU is around 58.3c.
I'm going slightly deaf though as I grow older so I'm not too conscious of fan noise! :D...(There's a total of 7 fans in the case, 2 x 120's for the cooler, 2 x 200mm top and side fans, 140mm rear fan and 1 x 230mm and one 140mm fans at the front of the case (the 140 front fan is an extra case mod). (All argb fans...very 'pretty' but I likes all de colours!).
Edit...GPU fan speed 1320 rpm. atm.

I'm going to head out into the black today, jump into one of my first discovered systems, and finish mapping the hell out of it....plus do some more exploring in the surrounding areas...just for a change, I'll also do some bio sampling possibly..

Jack :)

I usually wear my airpods and the wife doesn't like it, the cat likes to climb the curtains, knock nick-knacks of the shelves and cause general mayhem during the early hours of the morning and I can't hear a thing while playing. I guess I'm too aloof.
I'm a headphone man too. I use an ROG Strix Pro sound card with some AKG X72's with Sonic Studio.

Sound in this game is fantastic. Speakers wouldn't work well with Mrs. Tyres who has a tendency to "turn it down" - and if I was to go external amp/DAC and some decent air movers, I'd probably have them up to 11 *

* Although I don't go loud on the cans - in fact, I have it quite quiet.

I am currently pondering my next course of action. While this query has been sent to deep memory and AI for consideration, I'm doing random ground missions. When Deep Thought returns a result, I'll contemplate its viability.

In a station there are many more objects for the graphics card etc to keep track of, all those walls the steam or whatever it is leaking, various holo displays that you can see plus all the other stuff that is there but you can’t see without moving.
I don’t monitor the temperatures but I do look at the ingame FPS figures which can be down by a quarter or more in a station.

In space I can not hear my neighbour knock on my door.
The likelyhood of any of my neighbors knocking on my door is quite negligible.
But other family members storming my cockpit is search of assistance is very likely.
And some of them (in particular my mother) don't mesh well with the concept of headphones (open door wide enough to stick your head in and speak, then leave without awaiting a response, which in the end causes a lot of irritation on both ends).
Speakers wouldn't work well with Mrs. Tyres
I'm in the fortunate position of having only a hallway and a (my) bathroom bordering to my room. Thus noone gets disturbed if I play some music loud-ish, yet everyone instantly knows upon entry that they have to speak up to get heard.

Just sitting in the Main Menu raises my GPU temp enough to start up the GFX card fans - can't hear them but TechPowerup GPU-Z monitors them (amongst temps power etc). I do notice the increased heat coming out of the case though.

In space no-one can hear you scream my GFX fans.

I think it is daft that they have this "in hangar" scene at the main menu - no need for this waste of energy.

Akin to moving to Montana and raising lonely dental floss. I still don't understand why he named his kids Moon Unit and Dweezil.
Mebbe it was April 1st and/or Zappa wrote those lyrics under the influence of uhmm Onionhead? :]

…as for his kids, I wonder if they kept their birth names? Zowie Bowie is more generally known as Duncan Jones, the director of Moon ;]

Gosh it sounds like you all have top of the range gaming machines upon which to log into ED and here am I on a laptop so old he operating instructions are in latin and my internet speed is purely dependent upon how fast my hamster can run in his exercise wheel.
I know that feeling.
It is a miracle that my laptop is even able to run the game mostly smoothly without constant crashing.
Everybody and their mother (the app assiciated with the graphics chip as well as steam and Fdev's official table of minimum requirements, to be precise) tells me that the game shouldn't even start on this machine...

I've managed to pick up some new (ish) data items, for example "power association data" and "power research data". As I'm not engaged in PP2.0 - which I assume these are for - I want to sell them off. However, it doesn't appear these can be listed on my FC bartender.

Does that sound right?
I tried that too, but discovered they can only be sold to a Power Contact - i did eventually sign up for a faction, but seem to be stuck on the entry requirements… Nakato Kaine seemed the least reprehensible of the superpower leaders, though finding appropriate systems for delivery of required items tried my patience beyond limits… mebbe i’ll try colonising something this winter if the urge to truck 1000’s of tons of cement and steel arises… :|

My laptop is over two and a half years old now and runs the game OK My internet speed is down to BT, I think the operating instructions are in Ancient Geek.
But it was a cutting edge machine when bought which helps.

Indeed.
I also like my RGB's, and i have a totally transparent case: this one
Not the best in thermals, but my Thermalright Peerless Assassin keeps my cpu cool enough.
No meltdowns yet.

I'm with BT as well. Over WiFi as I haven't had the time (or money) to get some cable guy to lay down some CAT6 ethernet for me. Not an easy job so I won't be attempting it.

Still manage to get 350 ish mbits though so not too shabby. Ping is normally around 12ish.

Still can't decide on my next goal in ED. Beginning to wish I hadn't maxed some ranks :D

Always the option of starting afresh * or creating an alt account ** I suppose.

* NOOO! MAKE IT STOP!

** I'm not really into alt accounts as they have to stiff all over again. See *

That movie (Moon) is one of my favourites, if anyone has not seen it, do give it a go, well worth it. I think it is available to stream on Amazon Prime video.
