Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I got about 20 minutes on finally so nipped to a RES. I need a little more engineering but a thought occurred: the biggest wanted guy I shot was a Krait. I've never seen any large boats.

Is there a specific scenario as far as RESs are concerned for large vessels to show? Or is just RNG?

It is largely RNG, however High and Hazardous are more likely to produce bigger high value targets in my experience.

I recall reading that if the first pirates to appear or low value targets then you are unlikely to get anything large or valuable spawning so it could be better to cruise away then re-enter the RES for something more interesting.

Basically what aRJay said.
I recall a dev explaining it in a way. The RES spawn has a "budget" to choose from (Higher intensity have higher budget). That means that sometimes you get big ships with big bounties, accompanied by Eagles and Vipers, for example, sometimes you get loads of mid-tier ships with mediocre bounties, etc.

Like aRJay says, usually you can tell what type of spawn you got from the first couple of ships that appear, so just refresh the spawn if you're not happy with what you're getting.

Ah, I see... I just went back as I'd just G5d my thrusters (finally) and lo and behold, a naughty 'Conda. Got about 120k from that one although not sure if that's good or bad!

Also did some SRV work and got some germanium, selenium, tellurium and... (drum, roll please) two lots of arsenic. /mic drop

Now at Dev's for some polymer capacitors then back to The Dweller to grade 5 my access so I can G5 my PD. Chop, chop, busy, busy, work, work, bang, bang.

Make sure to take a box of bandaids for your knuckles. A wrench always seems to slip off of a bolt at the worst possible time and you lose some skin.. and then utter some colourful metaphors.

It is 120k (less costs, taxes, VAT, etc) that you didn't have before so that is good.

However they do come bigger, Anacondas can go up to 500k+ with the right baddie behind the stick, the biggest single bounty I have picked up was 988,472 credits IIRC (but I probably don't) that was in a very intense CG where wanted Corvettes were spawning.

Niiiice! Cheers for that.

Incidentally, I picked up a famous hero (anti-hero?) of mine on my scanner today. Makes Blake seem like a wuss (and Tarrant was no Blake). And I missed Gan and Cally.

Have you seen this man?

I find that there are usually a few humorous encounters every day. Yesterday I smiled when Dent Arthur Dent cut me up at a station entrance. I remember from a yonk and a quarter ago I nearly choked on my coffee when this came up on the local comms:

Still see Ivor around from time to time - but the first time really hit the funny-bone.

I saw that once going to some big population place. Have you seen the one about not going thru with the wedding? There's another one where a captain of some transport ship is talking to the passengers about the sights. First time I saw this it was "What tha?" And with the passenger ship message I started looking for the ship.

I was actually referencing the name of the NPC - Ivor ......

That evacuee message is just one of many NPC spam stuff, like the wedding nonsense and the cruise liner rubbish. However one amusing encounter is where you might drop in to an instance with a load of AspExes wandering along and you see this:

(... poor things have obviously gone cabin-crazy already.)

I wonder if that will get the "voiced" treatment in 3.3?

:)

I also like some of the station tannoy annoucements: the one with the American accent abount intolerable behaviour of blocking the egress always makes me smile - such emphasis on "intolerable" :D

SO, now, I've just had a bash at mining again, this time in a more sensible sized ship - T6 - to see how it panned out. Even found I could synthesise limpets so I could have spend longer out there but... well... I still fail to see how good profit can be made. I'm probably in the wrong type of belt: two of those in Diaguandri. About an hour to make shy of 20K. Hmmm. I think I need to research more!

The 3 P's are the business - Platinum, Palladium and Painite. (The rest is crud - well except for low temp diamonds but they are as rare as a very very rare thing or even rarer than a sensible post in Dangerous Discussions.)

They are not THAT rare. :)
I'm mining in ice rings quite a lot and even if I'm not cherrypicking, out of 300t of stuff I'm usually coming back with, 10-15t are LTDs. So that's what, 5%? So that makes them about 30% more common than painite and ∞% easier to get than arsenic. :D

I bow to your experience in that. I have rarely mined in the icy wastes and I think I have only ever seen them listed once by a prospector. I often drop lucky with Painite and well I am not going back down the rabbit-hole that is arsenic preponderance. :D

Apart from the cost of your synthesised limpets and any wage owed to NPC crew left in the bar it is all profit, to earn faster though you need to consider the value of the stuff being mined. Para Handy has mentioned the top 3 currently findable.
And speed of mining which is where the Type 6 (& Type 7) falls down, to really knock fragments off for your collectors to go to town you need two size 2 mining lasers possibly three and a hefty Power Distributor to keep them fed.
Prospector limpets not only let you choose worthwhile targets but also increase the quantity mineable.

All the new stuff that is coming is additional to the current techniques however to use all of it you will definitely need a ship with at least four weapons hard points one of which must be a size 2 a spare utility slot plus five or more internal slots.

Yeah, well. The trouble with arsenic is that even if they raise the probability 10x, 10x0 is still 0. :D :D

I wonder what the probability really is - maybe I had just beginner luck then, found 15 arsenic within 2 hours - now I don't know if this fits the "rare" bill or not. To me it was a lot harder to get Polonium, took me 3 hours for 3 units.

I'm exagerating, of course. I'm finding arsenic, too. I have several planets with around 2% of arsenic and if I focus on Metallic meteorites, there is a piece in every third or fourth one.. :)

Yeah that is my experience too - and as metallic meteorites are mostly coming in clusters of 2 or 3 in near vicinity, the chances are not that low.

I have to say that I have never found a group of 2 MMs - I thought they always occur as singles and triples. I have a few times been in one triple group and had the wavescanner signal for another MM in the distance.

re Arsenic - I had a thread about this so-called percentage composition figure given in the planet data and in the end I think it just means there might be some there if there is any figure, the actual figure meant diddly-squat it seemed. :)
