Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Staring at a 1,750,000 ls journey.

An hour ago I thought, just another 500k credits to take me up to the next million and I'll had off to bed, turn on the PS3 and watch Black Sails s3 e2 on Prime.

But no, here I am barreling through the black watching little dots in the background grow no larger. Speed is dropping back down to 500c so the end is in sight!

Just figured out why there was a 497k job for hauling 8 tons of washing machines less than 20ly, and that's sacrificing an hour of chill time before I crash ready for work.

I bet I get interdicted 3 minutes from orbit. And then screw up the glide and end up 200km out and have to waste another 10 mins tapping the boost button cuz I can't be ****d to re-orbit.....

Glad I'm a grown up or my mom would be going bananas.

One and three quarter million light seconds for a measly half mill? I feel I've been royally ripped off.....

edit : Did I remember to load up the washing machines, or did I forget that bit and end up at the destination with an empty cargo hold..... hmmmmm

One other I forgot to mention that I learned the hard way (but is common sense), when you're chasing someone and they've done chaff to scamble your gimballed weapons, sit tight and don't shoot at them until the 'swirlies' stop...UNLESS there is no other ship close to them and you have a fixed weapon.

As long as we're talking combat....guys, how are missiles? Are they useful or just bleh?

Yes, well it depends on the missile Dumbfire suffers from the usual slow projectile fixed mount problems, Seekers take 5 seconds to lock on but will chase your target unfortunately sometimes though idiots who get in the way. Both are good when shields are down. The Packhounds apparently can have a special effect that causes a serious amount of damage.

Useful or or not a T10 with a full missile load out is impressive with them all launching at once.

I started building a Cobra MkIII as a planetary mission bomber. I thought I’d give it some newly unlocked Guardian Shield boosters, two nice beam lasers (I love beam lasers) and two racks of dumbfire missiles specifically to take out ground targets, so I went off with it looking for some trouble.

However, it seems literally all of those planetary base missions I’d pretty much ignored previously require an SRV and aren’t the simple ‘destroy’ missions I thought some of them must be. Skimmer missions seem long gone or I’m looking in the wrong system states. So, I’m sitting in my Cobra’s cockpit with a load of volatile yet impotent dumbfire missiles, it seems they were named for the Cmdr that bought them. Perhaps I can go and attack the mega ship turrets with them instead.

Still, it’s a great reminder not to waste too many engineering materials until you’ve researched and thought through what a build is intended for and if it can actually be used:eek:

Well the consolation is that in future you will remember to check the distance shown in the mission description. A while back we never had that so if you didn't have the nav data for the destination system you were taking a gamble.

;)

What is the difference between a torpedo and a missile in Elite?

(Old-git remeniscence... A hit from a missile in Elite '84, or Frontier, meant shields down and serious damage. Two hits in succession meant "Game Over". So the first thing to try and equip was an ECM. It doesnt seem to work like that in E: D; no one has fired a missile at me, and I generally see comments about an ECM being "pointless"! )

Torpedos are IIRC slower and more powerfull but you only get 4 of them with a size 3 launcher, missiles come with 6 loaded and reloads available.

Aha! Broo Tarquin wishes to meet me. Once we've had tea (using his imported leaves) and the ole Python has had some laser tweaks and weakles, it's off to Empire space to rank up there doing cargo mssions; all in the name of
that coveted and elusive l33T moniker.

So lucky! I'd love to get Tarquin but am unwilling to grind for him lol.

50 units of Fujin Tea aren't that hard to get.

Yes I know it is the grind to get to such a lofty combat rank that you are referring to. In addition to the other engineers to get to him of course.

Currently unlocking that greedy witch who wants Painite.
Core Mining, bingo!

These seem much easier to spot than in the ice rings.

Don't know if you've already noticed, but as mentioned in another thread, with a good shield you can fly an Anaconda into the split core, and use it's long nose to move the debris:

Also, if the detonation fails due to to little seismic charges, you can put a small seismic charge into one of the remaining fissures, and voila! [noob]

Er, yes. Came back from last trip...21% hull. Previous trip, 1%. Before that (full of void opals etc)...0%.
Gonna get some armour and a better shield.

And now this chap wants 50 bromellite. Sigh. I've just sold some.:D

Gonna do the lavian brandy run first.

Speakin of the mighty Conda

Even though I was very skeptical about the handling coming from the Mamba, what a truly awesome spaceship the Anaconda is. The opals I was mining in the previous post, was in a system with a very tight binary. When I was randomly thrown out of the jump, I ended up, smack between the stars. The fuel scoop went berserk and temperature went so critical that I had already called the insurance company, but she survived. There were sparks all over, and more smoke than I've seen in any cockpit. Major cough, and on we go. Only thing was that the cargo scoop was seriously broken, so I had to jump back and have it fixed.

Any suggestions to my current mining setup?

I like the 7A fuel scoop. I like scooping! It's like peeling a grape with a sharp knife. With this setup scooping is normally finished 2/3 through the passage around the star at full throttle. She's slightly more heat sensitive than the Mamba, even with the 8A powerplant.

Cargo is only 128 ton, and I run out of limpets faster than I fill the cargo, so I'm looking for more cargo space. The docking computer saved my life once, so that one stays ;)

I dropped fuel tank size, dropped scoop size to 6.
Swapped limpet controller for cargo.

Dunno really. For mining, I'd probably lose the FSD booster, but I don't travel far when mining.

Edit: Forgot, stick a heat sink launcher on it!
