Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Funny you should mention raw mats! I was running low on cadmium myself so scanned the galmap for some likely geo sites. In the end, it turned out that my own home system of Diaguandri had a nice place to find the stuff.

Yup!
As i saw that name it totally made me think about monty python, ill bet there is another pilot out there with that name also.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were. :)
In fact, I would be surprised if there WASN'T an NPC called Sir Robin.
The NPC names are procedurally generated but FDev also added a ton of funny ones both themselves and from backer suggestions.

Been on holiday for a week, looking at a 1000km drive home tomorrow. I knew it was going to be tough, but just remembered what it was like to do a 7000km circumnavigation of a planet.
I took a lot more time to do that trip but was only doing 35m/s.
Hope I don't need as many hull repairs.

Edit. Oh god, 35m/s is faster than I will be doing on the motorway. Larger coffee mug required

Today i have passed into the Inner Orion-Perseus Conflux, although i am at a loss to explain why it should be called so, given that both are located 27kly away.Settling back in to the routine of exploring, away from the hustle and bustle of civilization. We've taken a couple of hard knocks, but nothing that can't be repaired. I've checked the codex for the locations of bio signs on my route, but the closest is 2k behind me,so i guess i'll just push on into the dark, searching, searching...but for what, i don't know.

I've taken another look at my Clipper and am wondering how it'd fair in an HRES. It's had some engineering - which I'd totally forget about - and could do wil a little more, but I reckon it might be fun. Anyone else use a Clipper for fighting?

The speed is nice, but basically no.
I once charged an NPC clipper which opened up with twin rails. The shots passed harmlessly above and below me, with me safely in the middle wrecking it's shield. Then it lumberoualy tried it's glacial turn, doing little more than showing me it's huge soft belly to tear to shreds.

For some inconceivable reason I’ve decided to max out my Empire rank (already maxed out the Fed one, not by design). I was already a Duke, so I have the stupid ships.

One helpful part of this is, by running missions I’m having to engage in combat, my least favourite part of the game (because I’m rubbish at it). So it’s good to try and learn that.

I also defected from Li Yong-Rui (got the pack hounds) to Quisling Duval (I want the shields), so I have numerous have-a-go heroes trying to have a pop at me.

These galactic power leaders, not that bright are they? I had a big hauler parked up in LYR’s base, it can carry about 400 ton. 2 runs in week 3 of his tawdry merch earned me the credits for rank 3. I move that hauler to Quisling’s base before I defect and he doesn’t notice or say anything.

My eldest son is pretty obsessed with Fifa, and has recently asked if I could get Xbox Live, so he can join a team his school friends have set up. Why am I mentioning this? Because as he games on my old Xbox One, and I on the new Xbox One X, setting him up meant that I now also have Xbox Live. So on logging in to Elite, I was suddenly able to chance Open. Decided I’d try it, and have now played around six hours under my belt this week. I’m flying mostly passenger missions in the Miyuki Maru, my engineered Orca. It’s a nice ship and a pretty good all-rounder. Is making me a fortune.

Observations on Open? Haven’t been interdicted once, despite being in a popular area of space (have landed at Felicity’s a few times), biggest difference I am noting is an awful lot more ships, space is much busier, which I like. I have been scanned a lot but had no issues.

I do have two questions, though - 1) Is there any way to tell AI commanders from human commanders? And 2) Am I able to see all other commanders in Open, or am I just seeing the others playing on an Xbox?

Thank you, Commanders.

I don't know how you will feel after your first negative encounter, but watch you six.Pretty much like planet planting, the game is good at lulling you into a false sense of security and then punishing inattention.Add humans into the mix and it becomes chaos.Have fun.
