Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

And so, to the next planet.

Nice big geo site in the open and on the flat, nice and easy to harvest:

Couldn't fit the star and nearby planet in the same shot:

My SRV is in both those shots, honest!

Onwards and upwards, off to the next planet in this system:

Super low in supercruise.

The other two worlds in that system where not too interesting, so mapped 'em and moved on.

The ultimate destination of this part of the jaunt is that red smudge, middle right:

The Jellyfish Nebula. About a 160 jumps away as shown here.

Better get a shift on!

Finished getting my permits, i have them all now. Time to take a break from it all... Bought and perfectly engineered a Krait Phantom, almost 70 lys jump range. Loaded my vintage guitar and amp collection on it... off we go .. to the stars! Going to visit the south reaches of the galaxy this time, including a couple of far away stations i never visited before. Wish me luck. I 'm about 7-8 thousand light years away now, systems start to be mostly unexplored, so i 'm beginning to look around. Jumping off mountains on barren moons, shooting unseen biologicals, flying between suns, some mapping, visiting the random frontier outpost.. and off to the black i go!!

Safe travels CMDR! 07

I have a plan, the third weapon will be a
Shock Cannon
Gimballed, Class 3
28 Vanadium
24 Tungsten
24 Rhenium
22 Technetium
12 Power Transfer Bus
from these loactions
2, 3 C, D Chemaluk Virts Dock Fixed, Gimbal, Turret Various
2, 3 B, C, D Ceos Babbage Gateway Fixed, Gimbal, Turret Various

Got most of the mats and a short shopping trip will sort out the rest......
So, a krait mk2 with top beams and shock cannon, lower pulse lasers ( or more shock cannons???) hummm....
Pretty much locking into combat ranking, trying not to be distracted by transport, sold the imperial cutter Pythhikkus. might need rebuy money:cry:
I find that shock cannons work really well on the Krait. At the moment, I've got 3 beams (class 3, gimballed. Efficient with thermal vent) and two packhounds (sturdy with multi-servos). I can fire a whole magazine and not get above 45% heat.

This was a bit disconcerting....
Got the new krait mk2. Swapped all the good stuff from the phantom. the hull reinforcements would not transfer.
but got ready for a new paint job and ship kit detailing. Found that all the kit bits I wanted are now bundle in the store for more ARX than I had.
Did the paint job, realized I only had this to go with. They'er going to laugh at me in the combat zone aren't they.

Paid for more ARx, got the kit bits ready to go now....Weapons testing Krait Mk2
Notice the thermal build up in the center of the Krait. it will cause me damage If I don't hit anything while in combat.
A little bit worried about that, I have thermal vernt on one beam. Ready to bring christmas cheer and merryment at all combat zones. :D

Finally, after pledging new years eve for the first time, got my packhounds, in spades.

Now pledged to that Redneck chap, what's his name again, Donald Hudson, Zachary Trump? I forgot, but doesn't matter he won't see me for three weeks anyways. Pacifiers next on menu.

Continuing my ultimate Materials grind. Boy am I glad when that part is over, still quite some ly to go, then again, today I will look at the total full cycles left to do for me at the crashsite, calculate total rebuy costs. The time spared by not flying back to Diaguandri all the time is considerable. Guess I should have looked at that re spawn option earlier, then again, it did not occur to me until I saw Exeg. video.

Wish that Storage section would get some tlc. categorize by size, engineering grade and type, weapons, shields, power plants etc. would do it for me already.

All right, crashing the ship into the planet to respawn at Diagurandi, while at the cost of a rebuy, it does shave about eight minutes of the clock. Considering the amount of full cycles required, it makes sense!

Thursday morning tick, eh thought:

Brexit continues only what tectonics already finished during the Pleistocene, the seperation from the continent. ;)

Re shock cannon, I like the idea of full manual control over fire rate, I dislike that they can not be engineered.
They're not a weapon I'm using with practicality and utility in mind. Much like the Eagle itself, it's all about fun. And they are definitely that.

I do think they need a bit of a capacity buff though - 240 rounds before having to rearm is tiny, especially for the damage they do. Admittedly, I was using them exclusively against big ships in the RES. They will likely be far more effective against small vessels.

(Incidentally, Great Britain is actually part of the Eurasian continental plate, which extends out as far as Iceland to the west and the Philippine Plate (!) to the east. The process that separated the island of Great Britain from the mainland was sea level rise brought about by climate change after the end of the Pleistocene.)

Going to change things up a bit. So far, the low intensity CZ I've found feels more fun than the hazres I've been haunting. Was using a Vulture (Mr. Bojangles) but I'm now going to try the FdL (Lady Sybil Ramkin but I feel a name change coming on). Before I can do that though, she needs some tweaking in the gunsgunsguns department, including engineering.

If that proves to not work for me, I'll head home and bring out the Corvette.

And here I was, not that long ago, saying combat was not my thing. Now I'm like that crazed chopper pilot in "Full Metal Jacket" - "Get some! Get some!". Or that bloke on the Toob channel "FPSRussia": he's not done much lately but this is one of my faves of his:

Interesting stuff. I have finally become to embarrassed by being labelled 'Mostly Harmless'. So I spent a day in the Anaconda yesterday in a low intensity CZ. Now I'm halfway up Competent, plus it brought in the 1m in Federation combat bonds needed for one of the engineers. I'm annoyingly completionist so trying to get them all to five star.

It scared me a lot for a long time, and it's definitely more dangerous than solo, but if you don't go stupid like me, accepting any interdiction and staying for the snuggle, then I would say that it's a lot safer than I had anticipated. If you fly a paper plane explorer it might be slightly more hazardous.

Agreed. I have been in Open for a month now and won't go back. I have never been attacked by a player, have had one very fun experience with one, and have met several around engineers' bases without negative incident. There were four of us visiting one in Sol last night and no one fired a shot. It does lend the game an extra frisson of 'what might happen next'.

And done. Got two more invites to investigate now... maybe later...

Yes I maxed 'the blaster' yesterday, got two more invites, then got more from (IIRC) The Sarge. Suddenly going engineering crazy since trying combat. Still prefer trading (I'm a tycoon and find it oddly addictive, will be my first Elite) but am enjoying getting to grips with some aspects of combat.

Yes,you have the medium there on your screenshot, they come in small, medium and large, and while they have the highest explosive damage of all, there are considerable downsides:

Expensive
Very Low ammo (medium class 2, large 4)
Slow speed to target
Hit and miss rate
Can be destroyed by point defence
Almost every ship can outpace them, just run away :)

HOW much??? Gggnnnghh. I need to investigate the downside of these :D

Ammo cost, ammo amount, projectile speed, arming distance. Regarding the latter, I have found reports from 1 to 4 seconds - ok, given the torpedoes' speed, that translates to a distance of 2 km in the worst case. Still a bad match for a ship that is otherwise set up with frags.
