Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Playing with Passenger Missions - I seem to be using the Cobra Mk IV these days as a test boat - tested out mining, planetary landings and now single hop Passenger missions using this bucket o'bolts ... Although I am like the world's grumpiest Uber driver... I never give in to requests for sightseeing trips... just get in, push em out...

That's what I do, too, on the rare occasion I take a passenger mission. Cargo shouldn't ask for stuff, that's my opinion :)

Sounds like you're having fun, though. I've never had a Cobra MKIV myself, I'm not eligible, but I did spend a lot of time in the Viper MKIV. Kinda sorta similar, I guess :p

Definitely do a neutron boost jump, Tyres! You can really go places quickly. They aren’t as terrible as they are made out to be, and as long as you remember to fly up and away from the star along the cone, you’ll be fine. Oh, and don’t use White Dwarfs for boosting, because they really will spoil your day.

I have a grand total of 9 ships, and I am trying to keep the numbers down by holding each one in my hand to see if they bring me joy or not :) I’m not yet Rear Admiral, so I don’t have access to a Corvette; besides, I love the feel of Splinter my FDL, it’s just sleek and mean :) I also run rings round Corvettes in CZs with Splinter, they take some time to wear down, but aren’t able to do more than scratch my paint, even Elite ones, as they’re never able to draw a bead on me in time.

And having been on a 14 month trip into the black in my AspX, which is now tuned to do 63ly and has been refitted with repair limpets as well, I wouldn’t trade her for anything else as a long range / long duration explorer :)

I don’t even own an Anaconda yet :D I can’t really see the need for one right now. I am tempted with a Cutter when the time comes, because I am nearly a Duke, but I will have to work out what I am going to do with it first 😅

I hear you about 9 ships. It does feel that about 75% of my fleet is completely superfluous.

I’ve been trying to find a suitable use for my Clipper.

As a cargo hauler, it’s not as capable or efficient as my Python, and furthermore, it needs an L size pad to land on, so I’d be just hindering myself by trying to use it as a mission runner.

As a miner, it is hindered by too few hard points to be useful in both mining and fending off the nuisance pirates that appear occasionally, the hard point placement is less than ideal, it’s cargo capacity isn’t as good as my Krait miner, and it’s size makes it a tad awkward to manoeuvre around. Though to be fair, I see Codger mining in a Cutter, and think that maybe that last point isn’t altogether a major problem :)

As a combat vehicle, it has the ability to be a serious tank, but has limited hard points with the aforementioned less than ideal placement. My Python, even fitted as an armed trader, is better in this role. My Krait packs more punch, and although an unfair comparison, my FDL wipes the floor with it.

It does have some utility as a luxurious explorer (My current build) although here again, it isn’t as well powered or jump capable as my AspX. (Actually, nothing is going to beat my AspX for a serious explorer, but bear with me). So it isn’t going to be a rapid transit to Semotus Beacon craft, neither is it going to be capable of picking it’s way through the really sparse areas between the arms or at the periphery of the galaxy; that’s firmly in AspX territory, especially as it’s fuel tank is limited. As a large ship, it isn’t going to be setting down on mountain tops or probing along narrow canyons either. The selling points as an explorer are

a: It is something different to fly when exploring
b: It has a really cool boost sound
c: I bought a shiny purple/blue iridescent paint job for one ages ago, so it will look good in photos.

er... that’s it, really.

Other than a quite expensive* exploration vanity project to go bimbling out to some local beauty spots, I just can’t think of any role or use for it that isn’t already better served by other ships in my little flotilla.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I would like to find a use for it somewhere. The paint job does look awfully spiffing, and it would be a shame not to show it off a little.

*have you seen the cost of a 7A fuel scoop?! Nearly 5 times the cost of the bloody ship!!

I do exploration and surface mats gathering in my Clipper and my T7. I love them both but similarly can't fid a use for them as a main role ship. I have wondered whether, when originally designing the game, the devs didn't expect us all to run so many ships simultaneously. I love both ships, so if I were only going to have one ship and spend my space life in it then either would be a contender, they both have real personality. But with so many to choose from, it is easy to let them lose out. Small combat I'm a Courier, mining I'm a Cutter, exploration I'm an Asp-S, combat I'm a Corvette, outpost work I'm a T6. So in a sense, everything else is surplus for me. Hence exploration and mats gathering in the T7 and the Clipper. I love them too much not to use them!

I hope that tomorrow's release fixes a few bugs. Still seeing the spinny orbit lines thingy in the FSS.

We'll see...

I didn't get enough dosh together for an FC so that's something for a future bucket list :D

Looking forward to a smooth roll-out!

Well, that settles it, I think. I shall turn my Clipper into a very luxurious and somewhat ostentatious explorer vessel, which will cruise around within 5-10 kl of the bubble and have it's iridescent paint shown off to good effect. It will be the equivalent of having a fine old Morgan in the garage that one takes out for a country drive at the weekends, and keeps safely stored and polished lovingly otherwise.

I shall also save myself a few quid and put in the 7B scoop, as suggested by @aRJay ; the total fill time is only 2 seconds less than the 7A, and it is about 70 million cheaper! I don't know why I didn't think of that before :)

I did make a very robust build for causing trouble in CZ's, with a rather ludicrous top speed for a large ship of 610m/s, but the mats I'd need to build it could be better spent on upgrades to other things, I think. Plus the hardpoint placement is, "less than optimal", shall we say.

Yes that's pretty much the role mine has - it arrived in Colonia last night and is all ready for some luxury posing exploration. In terms of the hardpoints, I agree with you - I enjoy it for combat, but ended up putting seeker missiles on the nacelles as the reticule grouping leaves a lot to be desired. So it packs an initial punch but then runs out of bang if I use it for combat. Fun though!

Like the Morgan analogy - although living as I do in a particularly windswept spot I have opted for something with a roof IRL!
