Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Recently mining at Nagarlaw rings, the shinny one had just basic cores.
The three or more larger roids surrounding a shiny had the better deposits.
Prospect limpets found them out. Mining lances did the rest.
General prospecting, drifitng through the ring, not many of the good ones are shiny at all.

I completed a longer than normal loop this morning (started out on it 2 days ago), bagged 120m credits for my pleasure. Found umpteen Neutron stars, 3 more Black Holes, at least 8 WW's and a couple of ELW's, all previously undiscovered.

Going to play some more this afternoon. Not sure if I should head out and add a bit more to my combat ranking or float around just looking at stuff.

I would go mining but .....I don't really enjoy it.

Just remembered as I'm writing this, I saw one of those ships labelled as 'private courier' in my home system when I arrived back this morning. I read on here somewhere that they carry interesting cargo. I might go smash a few of them up and see what I find. If nothing else I will certainly get into a fight over it.

I'll just have to wait and see where the music takes me.

I have only one rule when fighting. I never start a fight. I might provoke but I never hit anyone that hasn't hit me first. It's probably stupid, but it's one of the few illusions about this planet I've got left, so it's sacred. Yesterday, as you noticed, there was a lot of action at Deciat. However, all ships were clean, and they didn't attack me, so the only thing I could do was annoy them by flying close and watch them fight. I parked the Vulture out there, so I'll be back :)
That's a good rule to have in general, I think.

There were definitely some 'bad dudes' in Deciat a few hours after your initial post though. The second guy who nuked my ship gave me a notoriety bonus. I didn't even know what that was until I searched it. All the other gankers I've happened across must have weak game.

Many commanders leave the AMFU powered off until they need to repair something, it is a bit of a power hog. If you set the power priority for things you won’t need when you deploy hard points to a higher number than the stuff on the hard points then they will get powered off when the hard points deploy. I tend to have
  1. Thrusters, FSD, Sensors, Life Support, Power Distributer.
  2. Defences
  3. Weapons
  4. Vehicle Hanger, Fuel Scoop
  5. Cargo Hatch
The sound effects of being on life support are well done and at the end as it runs out quite disturbing.

Funny. I didn't even think about the potential for actually dying with life support turned off. I might try that in the iEagle since it's a much cheaper rebuy.

Thanks though. I'll definitely mess around with the module settings when I'm next on. I'm still finding lots of new stuff to learn in this game.

Observe, my terrible combat skills as I was brutally attacked by the second of three NPC pirates this weekend. You might notice I didn't even realise my weapons were offline until a few seconds after I got in behind him. I was very confused as to why my lasers wouldn't fire.

I just thought I'd try something different than the usual catch and ferry missions and it was kinda fun. Plus the third guy taught me something. That was a long fight. Unlike me, he was actually 'competent'.

I'm slowly expanding my little bubble of discovered systems out here. I've completed exploring and scanning all the systems within about 16LY in all directions, so my 'bubble' is about 32LY across so far. Systems are fairly dense here. It's kinda cool to have some systems with my name on them in one place. :)

Today I found 2 ringed Ammonia worlds in the same system. Very pretty.

Love the pink colour scheme. I was thinking about something like that but I'd prefer the one more reminiscent of Vice City if spent the bucks to make the change.

Those are funky jovian rings though. Where are you?

I’m out about 22,000LY from Sol and about 1000LY from Colonia. There’s nothing special here, so the whole area is undiscovered. I found my first Earthlike World here a few years ago, and now I’ve returned to explore and mine for a while.

I tried exploring more but I got lonely even going as far as the Orion Nebula. And I'm mostly anti-social.

I've not heard of Colonia though. Anything decent going on there?

Mining sucks.

Tried it once and immediately sold the laser before I died of boredom.

But hey, to each their own.

I was averse to mining also, but I did catch the bug eventually. The chance of earning 200mCR in an hour appealed. I've only managed that a couple of times, the rest being substantially less but, if you want cold, hard cash quickly, it's the main vein (pun intended) to amassing it.

Getting a nice core is something I quite enjoy; seeing the 'roid go all 'sploded Death Star is quite satisfying.

I'm still a bit confused on the sub-surface stuff still, even after watching a "how to" tutorial. The first time, I seemed to do OK, getting the drill bit in and setting the charge off - albeit sub-meta - but the second time, they missiles seemed to just bounce off despite my absolute sureness of hitting the right spot.

Ah well, another trick to learn.

... in fact, I think I might just go and try it now.

EDIT

Hmm. I see they haven't fixed the intermittent "scanner probe flying the ring without scanning" bug yet...

I think I just had a PTSD mining flashback.

I didn't realise we could actually blow up asteroids though, and I do like your nerdy love for it, Tyres. Explain, Please.

If you find an asteroid that has a "core" - which will show when land a prospector limpet on it - you can launch seismic charges into the fissures it finds. These will blow the asteroid up, allowing you collect the goodies that were inside it. It's a little sub-game that takes a bit of practice.

Have a linky to all things mining:

Nice. I'll keep that open in my Elite tab area so I can take a proper look. Thanks, Tyres.

I've not heard of Colonia though. Anything decent going on there?
Colonia (and the surrounding systems) have over time become a 'second bubble' of civilization. Back when it first started, there was almost nothing out there, just one station (Jaques) and then bit by bit it grew. There were some Community Goals that built other stations, and eventually some outpost stations along the route from the main bubble to Colonia.

Nowadays, it's similar to the main bubble where we all start, only with less stuff -- less stations, less population, no superpowers, fewer factions -- but it's still a viable place to get missions and stuff. There are some engineers out there now, even, although they aren't all up to grade 5 abilities yet (they get better as more people use them).

So it's a bit like a frontier atmosphere, and it makes a good place to call home when you want to do a lot of exploring, or just get away from the crowd a bit.

I'm not staying in Colonia now though, because I have my carrier as my main base of operations. Colonia is about 21000LY from Sol, and I'm about 1000LY from Colonia (at the moment).

I made my first trip out to Colonia some years back, in a T6 with 35LY range or so. This was before current engineering was available, or FSD boosters, so 35 was actually pretty good. I spent a few days traveling out there, exploring as I went, and I had a lot of fun. It was a good introduction to long-range travel and exploration of empty areas.

I was based up there for a good while, liked the lack of factions and the fact that I came across a lot of friendly human players. And it's a great base for exploring (as @Codger so eloquently explained). But I left moderately recently, purely as given the confines of the system, the fleet carriers are very concentrated up there. There were lots and lots and lots and it ruined my immersion so I left. Colonia is a bit like a previously lovely island community which has now been discovered and overrun by tourists as they have opened up an international airport with direct flights. So I am back in the Bubble, have found a virtually carrier-free corner, and am loving my Elite life again. So I personally won't go back to Colonia, as the advent of Carriers has for me just made it a less-good Bubble.

What am I up to? Have spent a period feeling like a wartime profiteer, making a small fortune in wing missions. Rewarded myself by buying my first Krait Phantom (never even flown one before), outfitting it initially as an explorer/mission runner/mats gatherer/Guardian unlocking ship) and am tonight taking her out too unlock Selene Jean, having come across some Painite. Last-but-one engineer unlock, woohoo!!

(Last one is Lori Jameson - have to get to 'Dangerous'; current war should see me to Master, so a good way to go.

Shouldn't take too long for the LJ invite so good luck on getting hte complete set soon!

I'm out doing mining and I'm noticing something... hotspots are not all that hot. Time to do something else! :D

Thanks for the history lesson, Codger. Maybe I'm a sad nerd but that was honestly quite intriguing. I'm in two minds whether to head out there now that I'm done partially engineering my ships.

I'm not sure whether I can psychologically handle it though.

That's just a lovely project! Quite inspirational.
