I find it helps if you have a destination such as a nebula to head towards.There are plenty of dust clouds around to aim at.You don't even have to travel all the way (it may be 7 or 8 kly's), but it gives you some kind of visual guide and adds to the feeling of the immense distances travelled,imo.

I thought I was the only one who called if a Friendship Drive. They need to have her come in and re-voice that.

Depends on how much money you want to make from the trip
and how much time you want to spend on it.For starters, I'd use (if I hadn't unlocked him already - and were concerned about the time needed for the trip) not an AspX but my long range racing Dolphin, the Funky Cold Medina. 62 ly single jump range (ok, 51 without the Guardian booster) and runs cool enough to charge and jump while scooping, which means I can start charging as soon as the cooldown is done. In solo (yes, open and PG may on average result in longer jumps, i.e. longer "blue tunnel" phases), that means I can jump every 45 seconds - make it 50 seconds, since I also need to get the target in view first. So, as a minimum, 5000 ly/50 ly per jump is 100 jumps, times 50 seconds is 5000 seconds - or something like 1 hour 20 minutes. You could shave off a little bit from that by aiming for one of the neutron fields and then do the neutron dance for a few klys - but since the neutron fields only properly start a few thousand ly off sol in any case, you won't gain much by it.
On the other extreme, load up one of the "Road to Riches" sites with your target parameters, and you could easily make something like 200 MCr. in scanning and mapping value from this trip across 200 valuable systems en route - but need something like 50 hours or more to do it. Your choice.
I can't remember if I ever did a specific trek for the Prof - I think the first time round, I just went west and then saw a shiny. By the time I reached it, I had the 5 kly done.

Also,remember that it's 5000 ly from your starting location and take that into account. I assume that's somewhere in the new starter area, but don't know for sure.Come to think of it, if you're a new(ish) player and you choose suicidewinder,where do you end up? Right back in the noob section?

Oh, one thing I kinda remember from when I was doing the 5000LY thing -- the readout on Palin's page did not update correctly, and that annoyed me. I had to check my actual Stats page (which is now in the Codex) to see how far I'd gone.
I did get the invite from Palin when I reached the goal, though, even though his page still had the wrong numbers on it.

Of course, the “easy” way of unlocking Palin nowadays is to hitch a ride on a carrier bound for Colonia and then hitch a ride back. You can probably kill two birds with one stone by unlocking some of the Colonia engineers while at it...

One additional question - is there a way to find the value of what you’ve scanned but not yet banked without visiting Universal Cartographics? I’m on an Xbox, should that make a difference.

No, I don’t believe so. I’m sure I read on here once about a guy who said he jotted it all down in a notebook as he went along.
I though to say what i'm up to, for a long time i wanted to play this game because i like universe, astronomy, mysteries.
Now i'm hooked on this game, in maybe 3 month's i saw that this game is very like name said "Dangerouse" I focused mostly on exploring, now i am Elite in explorer rank, but i'm little dissapointed coz where i came from, my friends don't like like this game, they say it's too much time, too much risk. But i don't care really i will play till i can, already been in most outer space (deep space) two night's ago i got permission to founder system's i think that is where you start. Because i left bubble in my first start haha. So i am without any squadron, nor i am in any faction. Got permission's Sirius,Sol,Beta Hydri,Vega,Ross 128,Exbeur,Plx 695.. And i'm still always alone in exploring, tried to make some friends, but they ain't too much online. It's amazing feeling when you discover something, and when you want to sell data in some system. That rush of adrenaline, what if i got killed or i lose all data. Happen'd three time already but i am not mad, just more experience, and will is stronger for exploring. I hope to find something new. And i am not bad at fighting just i wont attack first, nor without reason. Now i am backing from Saq A* to bubble, and in my journey i found two or three system's where neutron star and main star are near, last night there were so close so now i am thinking are is there chance to collide those two star's neutron and main star ? I bookmarked location took some pic's for me to enjoy view, and also i like exploring planet's. All Commander's have great time in this amazing open space, and have a safe and comfort journey through our Galaxy.
