Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Again, I've done that. 2 shield/4 engine is my normal "traveling between systems" distribution. If I get interdicted I dump a couple pips from engine to weapons initially until I know if I'm gonna have to fight. Once that's determined I alternate between balanced distribution, 4 shields/2 engines, and 1 pip in engines/systems and 4 in weapons as needed.

Yeah, I also suck at power management.
I've been exploring for maybe 90% of the time, last year or so, which means I simply put 4 pips to engines, 2 pips in systems, switch the PD off to save fuel and forget about it for months.
Then I'm surprised.

Really helps with power management that I don't have to take my hands off the flight controls. It's on the thumbstick of my HOTAS. Which is easily reachable while still controlling my ship. Before that arrived, I had to take my hand off the mouse or throttle controls in order to adjust power distribution.

I have a few macros for pip management. I can press one key to achieve certain formations, 4 2 0 is my usual setting. For travelling it'll be 2 4 0, for fighting 4 0 2, etc.

The way I engineer my ships (and the ships I use) I don't have to fuss with pips during combat. I just have to remember to switch to 'fighting' mode or else my weapons won't fire for long :p

I decided long ago that my reflexes were insufficient for more than that, so I've built up a system that works for me quite well.

:)

I also have a POV hat on my stick with the power management bound to it.
But I also have a thumb with absolutely no muscle memory related to said hat.

So, training? It's taking me a bit of time to develop muscle memory for things like enabling Frameship Drive or Hyperspace Jump. I mean, I remember what position on POV hat is for each function, but remembering which modifier button is trickier.

Oh sure, I could spend a day practicing and it would be fine, but again, for something I'm going to use twice a year, it's not really worth the hassle, imo. :)

Yeah. When I'm in the bubble I do take out a Mamba or a Courier to have a quick shooty fun time, but it's a rare occasion and I tend to get bored quickly, usually I already think of places I'd rather be or ships I'd rather build.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I'm having so much fun being a trader that when pirates accost me, I tend to get really annoyed and blow their ship up. But I while it's engaging, I am enjoying analyzing local market options and trading a lot more.
