Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

That was a trip this eve - first Spec Ops mission, then managed to murder a bounty hunter and got my first notoriety point (as well as 40mcr and +++++ fed rep for that one mission). To avoid any heat, flew 1700ly in Jules Verne, my Orca, for my first visit to a shard site in HIP 36601. Raw mats will be stuffed by the end of the next sesh. Lots of codex additions too.

I haven't been on for quite some time until yesterday when a friend wanted to me to add them and a couple of other people, so tonight I decided to jump back in to play around a little. After trying FA off at Cubeo (which felt really weird with HOTUS so it went back on), I thought I might be able to get my high capacity multi-cannons levelled up so I took a trip to Wolf 397. The iEagle and Cobra MK III worked out fine but the Keelback will have to wait because I have no more mechanical scraaaaaaap. I then took a trip elsewhere because I noticed a squadron marker but I didn't see any human players around.

I also pre-ordered Odyssey early today. I've never pre-ordered a game before but I know I'll be getting it regardless and I was kind've impatient to buy a new game after finishing Alien Isolation. I then got Assassin's Creed for £2.57 on Steam because I've never played it before and it seems to be a good stealth game that isn't completely ancient. The one I'm looking forward to most though is Dead Space (£17.99 so a bit more than I'd like) since that might be a good replacement fix for Isolation, which I really enjoyed. That'll be my new game to start next week, I think.

I highly recommend it! It's about 26 thousand LYs straight from the Bubble or, if you decide to go visit Colonia on the way, it's about 22k to Colonia, then another 11k to Sag A*.

Thing about Colonia that I've found, though, is that you may never want to go back again. :)
That makes it more tempting. Colonia been on my list for quite some time so I should just bite the bullet and head out there while waiting for Odyssey. I'm only screwing around in the bubble anyway. Plus I miss my early explorer days when I felt like I was doing something risky and adventurous.

Not only that, but I started honking every system by default on decent length trips so I could buy myself a nice new ship with all that data.

morning all, couple of questions:

I see a lot about the codex yet have never dabbled in it, is it just a collection of your finds or a checklist of stuff you are yet to do with a guide/hint on how to do it?

With Colonia, I assume it has a steady supply of all the mats? is there an equivalent to Jameson crash site for example? or raw crystalline shard planets?

I too would love that info - I was a bit perturbed on jump 36 when the blue text for Codex discoveries started popping up like a fruit machine in Vegas (and I was sure I must have seen a Red Dwarf already...)

Right hand panel info screen. select codex.
There is an abundant supply of raw materials throughout the galaxy. Encoded and manufactured not so much.(a massive understatement in galactic terms) :)

This sounds like you have crossed into a new sector. The codex will profer a one time only bonus for first discovery* of certain types of encounter tied to the individual commander. This means turning in the data before it is destroyed in order to gain the bonus. Subsequent visits to a codex claim will not generate a new sector bonus should you visit that sector at a later date.
Not all categories pay out on the bonus, but you should still receive a notification.
*First discovery here means individual commander's first encounter with the phenomena, not absolute first dicover. It's a lot harder to get your name in the codex than it is to get first discovery of a planet/ system.

It's really just a big "You can collect all these!" interface. It shows stuff others have found, and it shows whether you have also found and scanned it, which is when it becomes "Confirmed" and part of your personal collection. That's all it does.

It does NOT keep track of your discoveries. You can get an entry as the first person to discover something (in a particular sector), but it's hard. Most things have been seen at least once by somebody.

It's also bugged pretty badly and will fail to update, or show outdated info.

Overall...it's rather poorly designed and really not what any of us wanted it to be :)

This is a screenshot of my current build in Dyson Sphere Program, just to show y'all. It has nothing to do with Elite Dangerous. Sure is fun though, and it's what I'm up to!

This is a shot from when I first got my planetary cargo drones working. I sat and watched them deploy over the planet for the first time. It was an awesome moment. :)

The Codex is very much like an Eye-Spy book or those Iain Allan train spotters books.

You can get an entry added to all the copies of the Codex if you are the first person to find something new.
You can add a confirming entry into your copy of the Codex when you find your first example of something.
Both of these are by galactic sector so you can find the same thing in a new sector and get a new entry in your Codex but not for finding it somewhere else in the same sector.

I wonder, is there a super bonus for getting everything in a sector?

I arrived at my waypoint 1, 19900 Ly from home. The second one I set is 19990 Ly away from waypoint 1. According to the route plotter, it’s 241 jumps to go.

I have noted from the latest INARA reports as well as EDSM that some spots in the galactic rim are reporting attempted pilot murders. Oevasy SG-Y d0 has reported a couple of ships that have been destroyed during the last 24 hours (source: EDSM). Also, I noted plenty of commanders in Magellan’s Star, according to the EDSM commander’s map.
