Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

You should be able to buy new/build/upgrade a PC for quite a modest sum. You don't need to go all testiclay out on some cutting edge monster... like this.

Trouble is, I'm a complete PC luddite. I don't even know if my preferred 'sit on the sofa with Elite on the TV' with a PC or if it just won't play ball.

Hey there, nice to see you're still around :) The console news is very sad, of course. It doesn't exactly produce a great feeling of optimism for me on the PC side, either. The game is winding down, I think. We'll have hopefully a couple more years, but it remains to be seen what really happens. Certainly the current situation was not FDEVs original plan. They are having to regroup, and who knows why.

Meanwhile, we can enjoy the game we have and hope for the best.

No indeed, I think we're something like 30% of the player base, and we did contribute money, so it's all a bit alarming. I'm with a large squadron but it has left us somewhat deflated. Might try the PC route but I'd like to keep my bank and unlocks. I'd cash out to around 20bn cr, so even if i had to do my engineering again, if they'd let me keep my cash and my triple elite and my G5 engineer unlocks I'd be in. But no idea at this point whether they will, which is a shame and not ideal customer service.

Lovely to see that so many familiar faces are still around! o7

For PC specs... that's a whole topic all of it's own! I was running on an i7 (overclocked to 4.4ghz) with a GTX1050 ti (my previous card blew up) and it was pretty ropey. However, they have implemented lot's of optimisation since then so it may well have improved. I'm guessing anything upward of a 1080ti would be fine but you'd have to fiddle with settings.
I bought a standard Dell Inspiron with those specs for just over a grand about two and half years ago, and you really do need a game to be well optimised in order to use top graphics settings. That's with me jacking up the RAM from 8 to 32.

You'd have to pay the same price for that old machine now. It's tough out there because of parts issues so not a great time to make the jump to PC. I've been looking for a graphics card to complete this machine and it's a nightmare.

As a console player, since yesterday's news, I'm not sure. I'm based in Arissa Lavigny-Duval space and considering a couple of Corvette Hazrez runs to see if my combat % goes up any. If not, I'll kit my Phantom out for long-distance exploration and head away from populated space. Undecided whether or not to max out the Colonia Engineers on the way.

Handed in 14 mil of exploration data and only got half way through cordial. Sadge 😾

But then I restarted the game and was allied! 😸

...something is amiss there 🤔

Anyway, couple of highlights. Believe it or not, this is a different moon vs the last which looked exactly the same. I think there is some evidence of panspermia going on here, what with identical atmospheres and identical biology.

And this neon planet. Usually these seem to be quite blue, but this one was around a brown dwarf which appears to have more influence. Bit of a pita landscape, very hilly with small flat spots and very spread out bacterial pools. This one worked out easier by hopping around in the ship rather than driving the SRV.

And this little argon planet, very near the bubble and nobody had bothered scanning it, let alone landing on it. Tagging that for sure 😸 Extremely rough terrain, so quite glad it has no biology to scan!

what am i up to, that my business......say s person flying around with a noterity 8 jailbird leg tag on.

I bought a cheap 4gb GPU (used) off eBay recently so I could play Odyssey, just as a stopgap until the prices of the more high-end cards comes down enough. There's signs of this happening. Hoping that this Ethereum 2.0 actually happens sometime soon but this seems like the end of never, this would flood the market with knackered, old cards but the new ones would be cheaper too (but buyer beware)

To continue my trend of stupid deaths recently, I found out what happens if you jump into a Water Magma vent while it's on blast. My SRV sacrificed itself as I passed 15km into the atmosphere then there was the drawn-out fall to the ground.

LeBron James has nothing on me
I tried this too

It's actually great fun seeing how many style points you can get for somersault and twist execution before life support, chassis integrity et al get compromised beyond survivability.

There are over 50 Fumaroles and Vents in this area, some of them are in the vicinity of my ship which is the black blob at the top middle. You can find Arsenic, Vanadium and Zirconium in the many Crystalline Fragments, Mercury and Tungsten in the Crystalline Clusters, the Piceous Cobbles have Iron and Nickel and probably other stuff I have forgotten.

This is a 1g world so watch your approach speed. Fortunately there are no Bio signals as the light side of the world is too hot for our suits.

Ship and adjacent vents 1.18km on 103 degrees.

Hello all. Long time, no see! I have been playing, absorbed in squadron life, even bit the bullet and set aside my reservations and bought a Carrier. Pretty bleakly miserable at the overnight console news, though. Depressing. With apologies for popping up after months and asking a question, does anyone happen to know what PC specs will be needed to run Odessey?

Welcome back CMDR!

I've recently (for the past month) been running ED: Odessey just fine on this:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor 3.70 GHz
32.0 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060

There where a few crashes early doors (really just the first day, about half a dozen, maybe) but it's been steady and stable since.

GFX mostly set to high, except for one or two (like shadows and ambient occlusion) set to medium. I should probably tweak them up, see how it goes. I manually set them lower when I installed Odessey, just in case.

Thank you and sorry to have been so absentee. Life got in the way, three kids on the bounce had Covid, a couple of our parents died... a grim couple of years but we're largely out the other side. Sorry not to have been around more. I'd like to say I'm back, but it appears they're going to turn the lights out on me. o7

A rough old time, to be sure. My condolences.

Lets hope the lights stay on long enough for a bit of an escape, at least!

It's been a long while, it feels, since I last set foot on a planet - mostly just been jumping, scooping and honking, stopping only to scan and map when 'the list' said I had a planet to scan for credits.

Technically, this is a moon, but it was the first world to return a Bio-signal in a while, so I figured it was time:

Whilst the life-sign was 'only' more Bacterial Cow-pats, they are at least high contrast this time!

AbnXTro.png

Spotted my first on the lip of the by now traditional large crater, whilst looking for a flat enough spot to land.

Overhead, the moon's parent planet, a water world, and the planet that brought me to this system, can just about be seen.

Yup, another big old crater filled with bacterial cow-pats:

No idea which Nebula that is - Jellyfish, Monkeyhead, and Crab Nebula are all fairly close by. It's not the Crab, though - still no sign of that on the galactic horizon as yet.

Onwards and upwards once more:

Princess Astrophel starting to show some real wear and tear now.

Wait. Holy crap! I see it!

That milky, murky blob, just visible top-middle of the image.

The Crab Nebula!

Only 1048ly, 42 planetary scans and 60 jumps to go!

That’s a very kind post; thank you so much. I will look into the specs and make a plan. Will likely play Xbox through the Spring/until FDev commit one way or another on the whole ‘can console Commanders teenager their whole account or just their credits across to PC’ question and then make the leap. So thank you so much for the helpful reply. Thanks, also, for the good wishes. Not our best period but hopefully on the up and up now. Great, inspirational images you posted. Elite is a true tonic.
