Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I'm based in Deciat and have been since shortly after I started playing. (That will of course change after I get my Fleet Carrier.)

A few jumps away from Deciat is a place called Shinrarta Dezhra and in that system is a base called Jameson Memorial. Always go there to buy your ships because they're 10% off at all times. It's worth the few jumps it takes to get there to save, in some cases, 10 million plus credits.

They also have most of the modules you'll need to outfit any given ship with, so no jumping all over the place to get them.
You need to have one Elite badge in your pocket first though, unless you're a Founder. :)
I had totally forgotten about that. Thanks for picking up my slack.
Looks like I have my work cut out for me... 😉

...

That is really interesting, could this be an Odyssey thing?
For all I needed to gain access to her station was one unit of meta alloys. And, so far, I didn't see any hints on waning access to those I unlocked... 🤔

The exploration data is not a requirement. By selling your exploration data at her base you gain some "rep" with her, in other words you can advance the degree of access to her levels of modifications. Back in the day, the tip was to go to Flic with the one tonne of meta alloys, donate that - which gives you access - then sell any exploration data you had on board and that would immediately increase your level of access to some extent.

You have to remember that there are literally thousands of people looking at the same data that you are.

If you see something older than a few hours, don't waste your time. It's probably not there anymore, especially in very crowded systems like Deciat. Limit your searches to the absolute minimum time.
That was not in Deciat. I am not sure if Khun is as crowded. Does not really feel that way.

The closest station I could find in those lists that had a refresh lower than 6 hours was too far away to be considered as feasible to have them in stock at the time I got there...
And this station I found by myself - a station I frequently visit on my data runs - did not appear in those lists, neither before nor after I found it. Last update way too long ago to be accurate, though.

How do these sites collect their data, anyway?

I don't think INARA does distinguish between 3.8 and 4.0. I feel like they completely abandoned 3.8 support. EDDB as well.

I tried to find equipment for the Star Moray and I found in both cases the equipment cluttered over several station in the area, only to go there and find anything but the stuff I was looking for.

I then went to another station I had seen some time before that they should at least have some of the parts I was looking for - guess what, they had all the stuff. And I double checked, it wasn't even listed for any of the stuff in INARA or EDDB...
The only thing missing was enough credits on my bank account - always fun to have to buy the ship first, try to fly to the station that has the equipment for the specific slots to find out how much the modules will cost...
Ahh...

ok, haven't read what Inara says, but
  • most of the Engineers will accept one or another additional thing to advance in standing/rank with them. For Felicity, it's exploration data
  • however, the fastest (and easiest) way to rank up with any engineer is to have them do mods on your ship/equipment. Usually, you can just mod one piece of kit up from nothing to rank 5 without losing anything. Keep in mind that, unless you have reached rank 5, modding will cost you more attempts
  • this only works with engineering on their base, though. Remote workshop upgrades don't count
  • the other thing is those mystical "10 million in exploration data". That's the usual rough figure (give or take -50/+100%) for getting allied with any (minor) faction in the game. Drop into any starport, sell ~10 MCr. worth of exploration data, and a) you will become allied with the station owner and b) said station owner will rceive a big boost for their in-system influence (INF). This suffers from diminuishing returns - optimum for BGS operation is more like 1 MCr.

Regarding EDDB/Inara info (they both draw their data form the same database): this info is added and updated by the players. To be exact, by those players who have one of the feeder apps running on their PC while playing the game. Whenever you dock at a station, that app grabs the commodity prices, outfitting and shipyard info from your journal and sends it to the database. Downside is that everyone else then can immediately see that data, so if you've discovered a valuable trade route you want to milk for yourself, you might want to set your feeder app into offline or delayed update mode. Of course, the station's inventory and prices change over time and with the BGS, so if nobody has visited there for some time (depending on circumstances, that may be as little as two hours), the info you can see on EDDB or Inara is basically worthless. Whcih is why they usually also show the time since the last update.

Ok here's my Dolphin amongst some mountains, with lil old me in the distance and partly hiding behind a rock as I'm a bit shy you see.
Dolphin 01.png

This planet has cactoids, conchas and a few other alien thingies on it. Here I started out looking for cactoids but came across some conchas near here so I'm doing them first, then I'll look for some other stuff.

I wonder if the devs will introduce carnivorous plants at some point? Knowing my luck I'll probably find one and get eaten for breakfast by it but whatever, it'll make life more exciting I guess.

Could I ask for some advice/opinions, please?

I'm (very slowly) getting stuff together to build a Maverick suit specifically for covert sabotage/infiltration/shutdown/theft/heist/espionage etc. - general stealth missions.

So, the first mod I'll be getting is quiter footsteps. The other ones I'm thinking of are:
  • Night vision
  • Extra backback capacity
  • Increased sprint duration
Now, I'm not 100% on the last two and toying with faster shield regen and damage resistance - but I'm not convinced on those two either.

What would you do?

Thanks!

I'm currently working on extra backpack capacity.
It's taking forever, but then again as usual, I have no idea what I'm doing

Do you know the fine for urinating on a newly discovered planet?

The exploration data would be helpful for Engineers like Marco, who requires a certain amount of coziness with Sirius... At least I think it was Marco...

In case of Elvira or Tod, I don't have the feeling that the relation to the resident factions does make a difference. Tod was the first engineer I visited after leaving the Pilots Federation, having collected the amount of bounty in the security of their little space. I didn't do anything in the radius of influence of those factions resident to the system Tod is based in. But he still welcomed me and gave me all the upgrades I asked for, eventually reaching level 5 access.
On the other hand, in Suhte, which I consider my temporary home base, I did a lot of paid work, mainly exploration and data hauling (and the odd bounty for an upcoming pirate / mercenary that thought it would be a good idea to interrupt my work). I am allied to Canonn (the main faction around there) and somewhere around three other factions of that region. But that didn't change anything about the accessibility of Long Sight Base and it's inhabitants.
I cannot say much about Felicity, though, as I just recently unlocked her. But I already have tier 5 acces on her base...🤷‍♂️

Besides all that, I have not seen any hint on this mechanic in game.

I take it this feeder app grabs all available data from that station, no matter what ship the player is in or which tabs they look at.
Anything else would make this system utterly useless.
In a way, EDDB and INARA are relatively useless for me, as I do not have the computational power to run two screens - one for the game, the other for my browser. And real life does not mesh very well with this, either...

ED Market Connector running on your PC will upload the market data for whatever station you are in to Inara and eddb.
@Marvin the Martian this tool also works when the station you are in is your own fleet carrier. Using this connector you can update your own carrier market data on arrival at a mining spot where you want other commanders to sell to you. I've used it at the Parrots head triple platinum hotspot and picked up over 1500t of platinum from other commanders using only this to advertise. It was over the last weekend of August.

- Quieter Footsteps

About the backpack, it may be a good idea for staying covert. It's risky sneaking back to the ship

Build both then run them alternately to see which is best.

Aye, she upgraded my surface scanner on the Asp X a while back, amongst other things. Can't say I've noticed much difference though when mapping, as using the original bog-standard one seems to do the trick just as well and I can usually get the efficiency bonus without too much trouble. As I mentioned though I'm not flying the Asp right now as I'm in the Dolphin and I haven't got around to upgrading much with her on that yet. I do intend to try out that FSD trick as suggested by @Fnord Velkor though when I get back, after this short discovery trip I'm currently on. :)

Not sure if it's an Odyssey thing, but according to Inara she does want exploration data to be sold at Farseer. I think I must have seen the "10 million credits worth" somewhere else though...
Oh and the meta alloys were the first thing I gave her a while back, the first time I visited her.
The Meta Alloys were just to get her to deal with you.

The exploration data is a way of making progress if you don’t have the materials to engineer something yet, this can be useful if you want to remote engineer a pinned blueprint as you can only reach the grade that you have unlocked at the engineers.
Remote engineering doesn’t change your standing with the engineers.

Note not all the engineers allow you to bribe your way up the ladder.

Faster shield regen is great, really helps a lot.
Increased sprint duration is great on my Artemis, not needed for missions, especially stealthy ones.
Extra backpack is nice to have when you're in collecting mode.
Consider Improved Battery, cuz that does make a difference in everything -- tool usage, shield life, air, etc.
Extra damage protection is good, but not as important as shield regen.

My Mav has backpack capacity, shield regen, night vision, and Improved Battery, and it works very well for me in all mission types.
