Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

.....
Spinning artificial gravity is impossible on any moving starship or even tethered starships (See video of this spinning object on ISS).

Nonsense. Of course you can have a spinning structure (or even internal assembly) - as long as the spin axis is in the same vector as ship movement there is no gyroscopic precession force to contend with. There was/is a NASA video showing gyroscope (spinning top) toys in use in the ISS, maybe you should go find that.

Remember that most (don't know how many) satellites use gyroscopes for spin stabilisation (orientation) - most famously the Hubble ST.

Just realised* that the tw@TTer video was the NASA t-handle video demonstrating the Dzhanibekov effect - that is irrelevant to a spinning structure that does not have 3 axes so a ring would not exhibit any tendency to this "tennis racket" effect.

Further edit - just a Brit point of view:

I must admit that my maths is not up to the job but I have often wondered about the orientation of the spinning stations in Elite. I mean, I assumed that their axis of rotation was oriented almost parallel to the rotation axis of the body around which they orbited so as to minimise any precession issues. However the stations in the noob zone (and some of the other new ones) are oriented along their orbital plane - so how do they stay oriented along that plane as they move round the planet? Surely they would be gyroscopically stabilised along their axis of rotation and so the slot would only point along the orbital plane once per orbit?

Any astrophysicist / satellite engineer / rocket scientist care to chip in?

p.s. Must show your working. ;)

Another 32 planets system FSS scanned, now I'm maping them, that's the part that takes the longest to do... Gonna go further "East"-"North East"...

It's not the only purpose of the spinning of the station, creating gravity is also one of them, I guess Elon Musk is taking some advises from Elite Dangerous developers....

For flashlight.

Who would have ever thought that? ;)

Well, mines on numpad 4. Coz, y'know, logic n' stuff.
Mine is down on the right hand toggle switch on my joystick base (I don’t remember the number) which is the same switch I use for the lights on the ship and SRV.

You laugh, but I do have a pair of left handed scissors, a left handed Smith & Wesson M&P 45 and a left handed deck of cards.
Left handed scissors or properly ambidextrous ones are useful for even us right handlers, as a Brit I am culturally expected and legally required to know nothing about Smith & Wesson’s non antique products, left handed cards sound very sinister dodgy.

After I had mapped the entire system where the Phanes is located, I decided to travel over to Guarijio to restock on Imperial Shielding mats. On the way there, I did some more scanning and mapping of systems, mainly to train the mapping process a little more. In Guarijio, I docked at Arend Stop to get the ship freshened up and decided to pay Universal Cartographics a visit and sell them some data. They had a nice little surprise for me:

Who would have thought to find some unmapped systems in this neck of the woods?
Remember a lot of places got discovered a while ago before mapping and even now people travelling in a hurry will just fire the system scanner while the swing round to line up for the next jump.
Some will assume if they arrive in a system that shows as discovered that there is nothing left worth taking the time to discover.

Nope, you cannot. Some people mistakenly think that the security level of the settlement is the same as CZ level, but it is not. I know because I tested it myself. You can have a low CZ in a high security settlement, and etc.
Hmm. Can be. In fact i don't properly remember what i'm tallking about right now - i just remember myself checking this, and it looked real, could that be the settlement security instead... I cannot say if i cared to check the color of chevrons at CZ itself, i probably was shooting right away... I suddenly went for a little salad hunting in Guardian Space (well i went for some more Guardian tech, but i did not find any as of yet, while Bio signs rained) so i can't check what i say, but guess you right... I'll check things again when i have a chance...
