What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

This is the first time I have tried posting on here, but I wanted to show what I have been doing on and off for awhile. One of my bad habits is if I don’t have time to play PZ I usually just won’t. With Vet School being crazy I usually have long times in between playing. I just wanted to show off what I was doing in my BirchWood Zoo. BirchWood used to belong to an old New England family, creating a zoo out of their manor and backyard.

Two things to note:
  1. I use my iPad to access the forum, so I don’t know how to screenshot it in game then get it on my iPad to post.
  2. I play with some graphical settings down, to not bog down my computer.
Either way the first two photos I wanted to show are from my indoor rainforest with lar gibbons and my Malayan tapir. Also I’m trying to build a flying fox habitat, which is supposed to be “in a cave”. The idea is you walk on a bridge with a waterfall behind you, while looking out on the forest. I might add more foliage later.

Here is my camel habitat that I made, the back building is supposed to be one of the old shelters from when the zoo was first built. A fire took the roof out. Considering camels can live in cold environments they mostly stay in the habitat year round.

Next up is the garden. Which contains a butterfly house, renovated from the remains of an old monkey habitat. Most of that history is long gone though. The gardens also contain the zoos population of swans and peacocks. You can also see the outside of the rainforest, which is very, very, unfinished.

Next we have the front view of the BirchWood manor. Behind the manor is where the lions used to live, and is now where the sea lions live. Btw there is no inside to the manor, just use your imagination. It’s where I hide staff buildings. The manor is famous for a number of things, one of them being the rooftop gardens, the other being the clock face.

Here is the outside of the reptile house. Which as of now, is home to dwarf caimans and a number of exhibit species.

Finally, I just like how it looks. A little restroom and food area for the guests.

I don’t normally post what I build, but I decided why not? It’s been long enough.

Finally had some time to continue the zoo. Still a lot of work to do on the black rhinoceros exhibit, which is not one, but three connected exhibits. Idea is to have a male and female. The third can be used for grown rhinoceros awaiting a new zoo or for a second female, so we can breed with two rhinoceros at the same time. Because of this the male exhibit is the one on the left and the female is on the right (because it will be most likely be a little bigger, so she and her calf have more space). But when we have 2 females, most likely the male will be staying in the exhibit which can't be seen by the visitors.

Not sure yet what I will do with the closed of part inside the building. Maybe this will be a viewing point after all and all three parts are visible.

Secondary exhibits is something that is rarely thought of in Planet Zoo i feel like. Irl its pretty common to have a second habitat for animals, or atleast a way to split the habitat in two or more parts. Really important for breeding purposes to give pregnant females a secure space to give birth and allow the new born to get stable before introduce them back to the group. Or for solitary animals like black rhinos or okapis to introduce them for breeding season and split them again after.

So really cool that you thought of this. Its something i also really want to keep in mind going forward

Thanks Marvin! It is something I really want to keep in this zoo. Already did the same for the sand cats, which can be separated from each other. Also the my big savanna exhibit has a part which can be shielded of from the rest of the zoo, making it possible to keep the male away from the females. But at the same time I still need to work this out in the stable as well, which is still one big stable.

Not today, but i finally bought the oceania pack, thanks to the sale, i won't use the animals for a while, given that none of them is either african or cold climate, but the pieces might me useful, here are some prints i take with the animals (none of the habitat's were made by me):

Really surprised that this pack only adds four animals, instead of the habitual five, guess it's for quality purpose, but it's still odd.

On today's topic, I finished the central waterfall from the Dier zoo, which is the most important part of the zoo both lore-wise and thematically speaking, and also made great progress with the lechwe habitat.

Not gonna post much about Dier zoo on this thread from now on, given that i pretend to return to the IUZ thread when the lechwe habitat and ambiance get ready.

I'm glad you posted this! It looks great. And having the backstory in with it is always interesting. Even if' it's just something in our heads, why not. it gives your zoo some history to share.

I think the qoukka might be the 5fth habitat animal your looking for ;)

The Oceania pack does have 5 animals too (4 habitat and 1 exhibit).

Huh? Kiwi, devil, quokka, penguin, flying fox. That's five.
Quokka? I don't know what you guys are talking about, my dlc only come with taz, kiwi, penguin and bat, but i'm fine with it, it's not like the 4 animals are bad, so yeah.

i know that quokka exist, it's just a case where i prefer to pretend it doesn't exist, hence the only four animals joke.

But the quokka is more common in zoos that the spectacled flying fox, isn't it?

Anyway, we all have our opinions ☺️

Just curious, but why?

Like i would have prefered something else instead like the tree kangaroo or Victoria's crowned pigeon but i don't hate them. They are fun and cute.

I don't really care about captive presence when it come to animals, my beef with quokka is completelly personal.

They just, look very off for me, and i don't know why exactly. I think they hit some kind of uncanny valley thing in my brain that just make me hate them.

The weird thing is that this happens only and exclusivelly with quokka, i love ugly things such as anglerfishs, but it's the small marsupial that bother me.

Totally understand, I have the same with Pallas Cat - it is just so ugly to me. And I usually like weird animals, but the Pallas Cat gives me off-putting vibes for some reason, haha.

Nice, I’m in the same situation as you lol, I just put them in my google drive and screenshot them from there

Really nice exhibit! Almost feels like you first did the foliage and draw the path in afterwards.

Also the bird spotting/hunter viewing point is amazing!
