What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

Okay, but here's my question - how do you get rid of the background in Canva? Because as an experiment I used an Indian elephant screenshot from the PZ wiki (a great shot, apparently uploaded by our own @FoxyDee so credit where credit is due), and the background was removed perfectly, but when I paste it into Canva it still has a black background;

I think I usually just copy paste it from the example it shows without clicking on the picture first. If I click it first I also get the problem. Hope you understand me

Could it be that you saved it as a jpg?
I think it needs to be a png or dds to have a transparent Background. There are other Formats which allow for a transparent Background but I don't know which ones
Definitely a .png, but I didn't actually download it.

Yeah that's what I did, but I actually got it to work by downloading it first!

Thanks for the help, this opens up a whole world of possibilities now!

Edit: Though I still wish Canva didn't hide so much behind a paywall, or at least was cheaper. Even being able to bring in images from the outside, you can't recolour them (such as animal sillhouettes), and most of the good ones in Canva itself are watermarked (which kind of defeats the purpose of a sillhouette!). Not to mention, some of the best fonts are locked away.

I'm tempted to give Gimp another go (I used to use it a long time ago for mapmaking), but I don't know if I'm really that committed to billboards to try and figure it out again. 😅

Today, I started a a new zoo. I needed something sunny and tropical, last summer it was Australia desert map, this year I set my zoo in California (wish we had a coastal map). I haven´t done much except this centerpiece statue using the new bronze penguin. Thought this was a nice shot to share. Please ignore the horrible unfinished gift shop, lol.

Looks really nice. Definitely need this Statue in my Marine Park when I buy this DLC

Did you try adobe spark? I use that and it feels like less is behind a paywall. It is usually also good fpr removing backgrounds, at least when you make your screenshots with a green box. I have ansel for that, so I can do this in game.

And I'm also that old stubborn human that loves to work on her PC and not on a phone ;) I mean, for PZ I even would have to transfer a screenshot to my phone first anyway. More or less the reason why I abondoned my Planet Zoo Instagram.

That pyramid is nice.

You know, I still haven't used any of the new animals except the scarab? What's wrong with me

Finished my Indian elephant habitat! I thought it was going to be too small but it's actuall a good size.

The first image is an overview. There's a sheltered viewing area to the left overlooking the water where the elephants swim, and then the main path around the front with a low corrugated fence. There's also an iron bar fence below it inside the habitat so the elephants can't reach up. All of the green foliage, which is basically just bamboo, is out of reach, and there are fake trees that the elephants can rub on (in concept, of course). You can also see the big elephant house at the back.

Here is a view from the sheltered viewing area. I might do some more interior work because it's looking kind of plain. This is where I'll add my billboards, too, but right now I'll keep it all out of view because it's pretty boring.

20210704084852_1.jpg

This is the view from the main path. There are subtle terrain changes in both slope and substrate here. The inside of the elephant house has a soft dirt/sand mixture so the elephants aren't on hard ground all the time.

20210704084955_1.jpg

And here is the rear of the elephant house, with the special pen for when the bull goes into musth. The fence is electrified and the fence posts are reinforced concrete.

My next task is to do some landscaping around the zoo grounds so far. I've been lazy with it so I want to get on top of it before I go too far with habitats and lose motivation (and as you can tell, everything is looking a little dull).

Figured I'd share some other work I've done today;

Here's the zoo entrance. I'm not fancy enough, or patient enough, to bother doing a big old carpark or anything like that. According to some very brief research into local garden centers, all the flowers in that garden can grow in certain seasons in temperate regions, including the recolourable plumeria, so that was fun to play with. I wanted it to kind of look like a "bee garden", where it looks planted but also a little disorganised.

20210704131730_1.jpg

Here's the entrance "plaza". To your left when you enter is a toilet block. Behind it is the main administration building, hiding some staff facilities.

20210704131741_1.jpg

To the right is the Vet Centre. Guests can look in on what the vets are doing. The whole building also hides the quarantine and the research centre.

20210704131749_1.jpg

And finally an overview, with the lions on the right and the elephants on the left.

20210704131829_1.jpg

I use the dark asphalt to denote staff roads, but in most real zoos a lot of the animal movements and such take place at night and the main guest roads are used for vehicles, too, so I'm not being super particular about how it all goes together.

I'm going to make the lions the start of "The African Plains", so depending on where my motivation takes me it might be a Kopje next (meerkats, aardvarks, and probably hyenas since I haven't used them in a zoo in a while), or I might build in the middle and do something small. I'm also planning on adding a 'jungle cats' area with jaguars and clouded leopards, similar to how Wellington Zoo has a 'grassland cats' bit with servals and caracals.

Whoa, that's a great entrance! And I really like the name of the zoo. Do you have a background story for it?

A quick question... i saw somebody, that you can bury the mud bath? I've tried everything, but it doesn't work for me. does someone have the ultimate tip, what should I adjust there? the collision with scenery is deactivated.

I love the new grass from the africa pack.

Have you tried editing the terrain after placing the enrichment? Whenever I place enrichment it always flattens the terrain in a rather big area around it, but I can adjust the terrain as much as I want when it is already placed.

So, how are the meerkats enjoying the fact that their neighbors are showing excessive interest in them? (Cheetah: "Look at the meerkat snack - PACK. Meerkat pack is what I meant to say")

Also, loving those builds

yes and it does not work, no matter which hook I place. is there another option for that?

The meerkats are fine :D they are very happy in their castle. i will show this later :) the meerkats had to move, because the enclosure with 1400 square meters was a bit too big xD

Didn't you want to hide the Mud Bath? Already tried it with that one too? In Case it doesn't work, I always cover the Edges with Rocks. The Desert Rocks seem to fit best to get a smooth Color Transition. Even nicer if you then also add a few Pieces of the new Grass or other Plants
Edit: just got another Idea.
-Build a Waterproof Barrier around the Place where you want the Mud Bath to be
-edit the Terrain in a Way that it fits
-fill the fenced Area with Water
-push the Mudbath into the Ground
-delete Water and Barrier

I think this should work

Not as such, except that it was built in the 1970's and has recently undergone a major upgrade. The name is actually the surname of an English family I know here in NZ, but I believe there are places in England with similar names as well. I'm sort of imagining that it started out as a fairly "local" place but experienced a boom with local tourism and was able to expand into a modern zoo (makes me wish we had some more small-time European species though - foxes, badgers, wildcats, lynxes, deer, deer, deer). I have a plan to put in wolves and Himalayan brown bears, with the latter being recent 'replacements' for the more local Eurasian brown bear (hence while they'll be next to the wolves, with the assumption that the area used to be for more local wildlife and generally European wildlife).

That pool is beautiful! If you don't mind accepting some advice I would suggest a bit more terrain painting, some soil 'paths' through the grass where the Elephants have walked and maybe mix in some of the other type of soil or rock into the soil part. It will liven up the large expenses of the same texture. Looks great anyway!

You probably have to disable the animal navigation terrain constraints in the settings @Fini
That's it! Thank you so much! I'm going to test it out after work.
Sometimes I feel really stupid ...
2 weeks ago I only found out that you can skip the intro. On Friday that you can recolor the mesh and steel barriers and now how to dig in the mud bath. You never stop learning things like this.
