What does the community want? Post your request here

It seems like FD has gotten out of touch with its community over the past years. Communication is usually one-sided, player requests ignored and content as a whole goes into a questionable direction.
When the community asks for something like ship interiors, instead we are getting settlement interiors. Then, when fleet carrier interiors were released, players appreciated the new addition, albeit it didn't offer any meaningful gameplay content. But that isn't an issue as fleet carrier interiors have been requested by the community for some time.

Now, current development still focuses on the improvement of the borked EDO release and (hopefully) the merge of horizons and odyssey players back together (we now have THREE seperate game versions to play with, this is one shared galaxy game so please code it as such) and this focus will stay until the end of the year or early next year (likely the latter), according to some CMs here on the forums.

After that, I assume some engineer balancing tweaks and fixes as feedback for this topic was requested over a year (or is it two already?) ago. If not, well then I don't know either. But in any case, the question I would like to ask everyone now is what your most requested features are?

For this, share your top 5 most wanted features. If this gets enough contribution, I will keep a table up-to-date based on posts in this forum thread. If you post some requested features, I will assign the top requested feature 5 points, the second one 4, etc. and based on the sum of all points assigned for a single topic, I will create a ranking and display it in this OP.

Here are a few topics that come to my mind from the past couple of months browsing the forums and reddit (updated with player contribution): Ship Interiors, Engineer Balancing, New Ships, Performance Improvements, EDO/EDH Merge, Deep Exploration Content, Additional Lore, New Modules, Player Market, Settlement Building, Bug Fixing, Biological Exploration Content, NPC Wings, EDO VR, C&P Rework, Powerplay Rework, BGS Rework, Ship Balancing

Ofcourse, this list is non-exhaustive and I will add new topics should they arise in this thread to choose from.
Likewise, as mentioned above, I will create a ranking table should enough contribution exist to justify such a ranking.
This is not only for FD but also for anyone generally interested in a rough overview of community interests.

Anyways, I shall start with sharing my personal top 5 requested features:

1. New Ships
2. Engineer Balancing
3. Performance Improvements
4. EDO/EDH Merge
5. New Modules

Add yours so this thread has a purpose. :)

Current ranking as of 22.09.2022
Mod edit - no polls!

Note: I had to merge some topics for example new ships and ship balancing as they sometimes do go hand in hand. Additionally, some duplicate topics posted by contributors were also merged and the following topics were climbing up the ladder as a result. For exaple if topic #1 was "BGS Improvements" and topic #2 was "Missions", I merged that together into "BGS Improvements" as missions are part of the BGS system and assigned 5 points. Anything below these topics, regardless of their positions would still receive their 4, 3, 2, 1 point(s) respectively, meaning that if topic 1# and #2 would be merged, topic #3 would receive 4 points, topic #4 would receive 3, etc.
Some other topics were occuring not frequent enough to assign them a single topic, so I made count of an "Other" topic (current score: 36) which will be ignored in the ranking as that is simply a representation of topics I could not categorize properly.

LAST EDIT: Added the first ranking

Confirmation of if new paid expansion is being worked on.. or if it is still realistically planned.
VR support in on foot content (happy to be basic control pad based but full motion would be a boon)
ED:O owners to get access to ED:H 4.0 so i am not locked out from my mates

Oh I think they're well aware of the changes the community want. The problem is there's a massive difference between what the community want and is possible to put in the game. At the moment, they're working on the Thargoid plotline, that will now take priority now that 4.0 and the console transfer is out of the way and so we've got until November until the last update of the year, which I'm hoping will introduce new game mechanics related to the Thargoid plotline. We might be getting new modules to deal with those game mechanics. After that, there's the reworked feature in 2023, which I think everyone suspects is Engineering and they also say that there are constantly improving the engine/ performance improvements which will be included in updates 14 and 15. So I guess points 2, 3 and 5 in your list are coming.

That's what they've committed to and, unfortunately, I don't think that we're going to get anything beyond that. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be surprised. The Scorpion SRV was a nice surprise but I'm not holding out much hope. Apparently, it takes 8 months to put a new ship in from concept (think that was mentioned in the live stream). The other issue is I don't think the community appreciates how long it would take to put their requested features in. Here's are my estimates based on what we've seen on fdevs performance so far ;-
  1. Ship interiors - The most requested feature and the most ambitious. I reckon this is another Odyssey sized expansion when you look at the work involved, so maybe another 2 to 3 years. Will fdev want to commit to that after the pasting that Odyssey still receives? At least it will be easier to develop now that the consoles have been dropped.
  2. Full Odyssey VR. - This one I would say has to be a paid for expansion. We all know that Elite still is one of the best VR experiences in vehicles. However, having dabled in VR dev a little myself, I can say from experience that to create a standup FPS VR experience to match it is very difficult to do properly and very hard to made a business case for. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if they put it in. I just don't see how they'd make money if they VR base isn't big enough.
  3. New ships - As has been said, eight months work per ship at least but how do you make money from it? You can't sell it as an expansion because that means you'd get accusations of pay to win. I guess the only way to get revenue from there is create a whole load of exclusive ship skins / kits for the new ship.
  4. Crime and Punishment rework - This is probably a huge six month rework.
  5. Powerplay rework - I think that would need a proper six month effort to keep going.
  6. New planetary landings - Hopefully with the new planetary tech, it will be easier to add them in. I suppose that each planetary type could be a kind of mini expansion but fdev have to work out meaningful gameplay. I mean I do like the plant scanning in Odyssey (in a relaxing old man fishing type way) but it does feel that we need more than just scan things.
So there's plenty of scope for expansion, I just hope that fdev will continue to support what is already an almost eight year old game after the last change in 2023.

I can understand both sides of the issues over communicattion, but yes I do agree that the "Good ship FDev" does not change the course that they have set for ED easily (sort of like a Cutter, with the Rotaitonal correction bug, Oh and with thrusters off!. I do think that communications are done mainly in good faith, but do sometimes, whilst being technically truthful (as to the position known at the time), things that might be unpopular are not addressed head-on, early. I also think that some plans projected months into the future, turn out to be overly optimistic and unachievable once looked at in detail (Hrz 4.0 inst with Ody for instance). There have been improvements here, but still there are shortcomings.

My five
1) Quality of life buges fixed (Galmap settings lost / Unboosted jumps out of Neutron/WD systems/ Navlock issues fixed / Rotational correctiopn thrusters bug - that kind of thing. UI not updating in a timely manner (Fines/bounties/cargo, that kind of thing). These issues have been around a long time and are being overlooked in favour of shooty shooty stuff.
2) Minor design changes to UI to make it more usable, Galaxy map improvements (missing info, general feel of it, more consistency in search results, ability to consistently lock onto a searched systemwhich is not part of the current filter ) for example.
3) More game loops in Exploration and Exobiology. What we have there is very thin compared to Combat.
4) Improvement in the Exobiology scanning process. The twitch based minigame was stupid, but just cutting it out, whist a good immediate mitigation, is poor in the long term. (Thought - Each scan of a species adds value but dwindling returns as you scan more, doing a few scan s of the same plant - Say leaf, bulb, stem adds value to the scan. You choose how many scans for the species and get rewarded for how thorough you are), multiple concurrent species scannable (say 3)
5) More on foot content that does not overtly, or usually, involve on-foot combat.

I actually don't think that the game needs more ships/modules. We have a decent toolbox if we use it properly. Base building that would be difficult to manage and balance - not a priority for those reasons. Ship interiors - This would entail a MASSIVE amount of work to both fit out the ships and also would be unfulfilling as without introducinfg many more game mechanics and edge cases that need to be hndles, it would be thin and unfulfilling.

Powerplay
Superpower (as in BGS hooks, ranks, etc) rework
Ship balance (as in, Asp S, T-7 rework) and nerfing silly ships like the Anaconda and FDL
Rationalizing and harmonizing engineering unlocks across engineers, tech brokers
New ships (no more new mediums- more SLFs, SRVs, small ships and one big one).

One thing springs to mind, as I attempt to engineer this fdl.
It appears that once again entire swathes of my arduosly crafted module storage have been downgraded to 'legacy' status, with the added feature this time of being unconvertable.
Hardly rewarding having to wipe a g5 mod and repeat the process, just to get the experimental.
I should add that i am still attempting to play on a ps4 and assume this is a consequence of the plethora of game versions now circulating.

Well, that's a difficult one, because let's be honest, what doesn't deserve a revisit in EDO.

Performances improvements (planet side and concourse)
Lighting improvements (mainly in space, stars, nebula etc)
EDO - EDH4.0 crossplay (solves the "why can't I have H4.0 with Ody problem")
Rebalance PvP / Rework engineering (because PvP was better before Engineers)
Ship interiors

There's also a massive difference between what the "community" want and what the community "want".

That alone makes it impossible to implement (or not implement) some of the changes that the "community" "want" without alienating some other part of the "community"

Yup. When asked for a whole load of requests at once, My response is normally, "I only have one pair of hands". It's a case of which one do you want first! In the case of the OP, we know that option2 and possiblly 3 and 5 are already being worked on but none of the other features will be looked at until they're done.

Just bug fixes please .
All the ones that have been around for years, that we have come to accept .
Damage on all ships ?
And a bug tracker that works for us
and a medium Imperial ship
Nothing really major .

1. Cross play between consoles and pc's in both EDO & EDH.
2. New ships for both titles. Make small ships great again.
3. Reworked BGS where players could benefit from being allies of factions.
4. Reworked Powerplay & PP modules
5. New types of missions (an example: megaship heist) & ship size restricted missions. Less grindy missions, straight up, assassinations for example you get a contract you make a hit where your target is, remove time consuming "find contact" middle man.
6. Imperial Clipper resized to a medium ship or new medium imperial ship. This is what Community been asking for YEARS.
7. In game detailed information about poi's, megaships, derelicts without resorting to third party sites. Such information could be shared by allied factions and stored in a codex.
8. Player owned small installations (mining, scientific, agricultural, industrial). Inflatable structures & portable equipment. Mini homes with workshops, small scale production of resources ie. mineral extractors, deep space data and exobiology, greenhouses, workshop, solar panels & geothermal tapping.
9. Player investments. New types of business ventures generating passive income from being a stakeholder of a company.
10. Panther Clipper. A tritium powered ship with 100ly jump range. A smaller version of a carrier yet more specialized because of modular design. AKA - fleet carrier support vessel redux. For those who don't want huge mobile base designed for a squadron.
11. Reworked module GUI (search, listing orders)
12. Increased module space where player could store in a carrier/panther clipper/surface base.
13. Specialist SRVs / modular design
14. Reworked Asp Scout.

Top 5? Sure, why not.
1) More narrative content (including creative use of existing features).
- Already their stated priority for the next six months, of course, but I want it to continue and if possible be expanded further
2) Fix the system connectors setting bug and put a "don't play again" option on the Salvation video
- Sure, there are way more serious bugs out there, but these are the ones which annoy me the most day-to-day
3) Extra exobiology containers / ability to sample by leaning out the window of the SRV
- Takes a bit of the hassle out of it without changing the actual gameplay much
4) Odyssey missions which don't require return-to-source to be paid, ability to take Odyssey missions without leaving the ship
- Might actually do a few of them again if they add these. A-B-A just doesn't suit my normal play.
5) Ways to improve - or decay - stations on a more persistent and significant basis through the BGS in terms of population, market size, outfitting, services, etc. Wouldn't go as far as colonisation/abandonment of systems until that's been in and stable for a while, though.
- It's no fun if all of the 5 are plausible requests.

if you genuinely do not like the core game experience after 8 years, i would suggest it is highly unlikely FD will release a "Jesus Patch" which will suddenly transform it for you (and if they did i dare say many players who are currently some what happy with how things are will then be angry)
You make it almost sound like wishing a game was fun is too much to ask.

1. Remove FC upkeep.
2. Make FC modules take more space.
3. Let FC refuel while in orbit around KGBFOAM (might take a few hours for full tank, np)

=> Let people do with their FCs what they want for free, but with slight penalty so things wouldn't get too OP.

You make it almost sound like wishing a game was fun is too much to ask.
not at all........... my point is different strokes etc, There is a lot in ED i wish was better, some perhaps fanciful and some where FD have hugely dropped the ball imo.

but at its core I think the game IS fun...... You do you and all that but i was just suggesting that if you genuinely believe the game isnt fun then i cant imagine you being happy with what FD do deliver as they are unlikley to change the core game.
