What exactly is the purpose and future of on foot game play in ED?

People wanted (demanded, complained for) "Space Legs". Now we have Space Legs and the question arises (to what end?)...

I'm glad that folks got what they asked for. However, I never understood why this game needed them. I only got off my ship once (on purpose) to see the bridge of my FC while transitioning hyperspace. Couldn't get back aboard my ship fast enough. Even now, if I exit my cockpit by mistake I break out in a cold sweat (in VR) and have to dig for the keyboard to get back aboard...

I don't expect I'll ever want to play this game on foot.
To the end that some people enjoy it, it doesn't need anymore justification than that. I'm glad you're content with staying in your ship and it's great that you have the option to carry on enjoying your ship based gameplay and pretend legs doesn't exist without penalty. The scope of the game was never supposed to stop at ships though and it's also great that there is ground stuff for those that want it.

Strictly speaking no engineering for foot or ship has been mandatory.
Right, but as someone whos done extensive settlement raiding, settlement restoration, ground combat zones, and some exo, g5 weapoms and suits perform just fine. The engineering effects are nice bonuses, but if someone didnt want to grind the engineer access out, they can perform well without it

I did it in G3 well into the Thargoid war. My first G5 suit was done for the AX restoration jobs.

When I want need to escape another CMDR in a ship, I'd never make it without the engineering (Shields, Engines, Power Distributor and Power Plant at a minimum)...sometimes I barely make it as it is. Recent results were 30% hull, 0% shield and another where I escaped with 4% hull, no shield. I usually run up a against different builds and so need to be fully prepared...

This one I made a few mistakes...

On-foot gameplay needs a rework for better FPS combat, more weapons, suits, bigger carry capacity, Thargoids on-foot, ship boarding, and better integration with other game careers.

It isn't COD in space, so would need a much bigger rework than your suggestion, allegedly.
And, if it had such, there would be complaints that it was just like every other 'done to death' FPS game...
