What fps is acceptable?

Increase your fps in odyssey, if you do any of these steps your FPS will increase,

Steady at 100 would be ideal for me. Biggest issue I find is with the current display technology though, can anyone here recommend a display that is better than my old 17" Sony trinitron crt for smoothness !

I see people on here complaining that they only get 60 fps....... if you turned your counter off would you even know? What can the human eye discern?

Now, I am only getting 20 fps and I can sure as hell discern that - it runs like a dog.
Consistency is important.
I play Titanfall 2 a lot, 60 fps vs 100+ fps is a big difference. You don't see that anymore, you just "feel" it. Playing at 144 fps, it is extremely noticable when fps drop by as little as 5 or start being inconsistent.

In Elite I'd be fine with STABLE 60 fps. I'd love to get stable 144 fps but... yea...
The current unstable 30 fps I'm getting with a 7700k + 1080 @ 2k are definitely not enough.

For VR certain headset manufacturers require 90 fps in order to provide the official compatibility. With oculus rift we are currently very far from that

Oh yes, I know. Here's why - my monitor / TV has a minimum refresh rate of 60 hz. That means my optimum refresh rate is 60 fps. If it drops below 60 fps, one of two things happen. Either I'll get screen-tearing, WHICH I HATE, or in my specific case with vysnc turned on, my framerate will drop down a multiple of 60, which means 30, 20, 15, etc. Even if this drop is brief, it translates as a very noticeable stutter, which is almost as annoying as screen tear. But 60 fps vsynced to 60 hz is butter smooth for me. Of course even higher would be better, but my TV is limited to 60, and 60 is enough for me.

As for 30 fps, it really depends. A game that uses motion blur effectively can look pretty good at 30 fps. RDR2 on my PS4 looks pretty good. ED at 30 fps doesn't hold a candle to 60 fps in my experience. But if I'm getting constant drops below 60 fps, then I just prefer to lock at 30 in order to avoid stuttering.

And then there is VR, which is an entirely different ball of wax!

ps - framerate is so important to me that I usually prefer playing a game at 60 fps 1080p than 30 fps 4K.

All current Sony TVs have good smoothness. Samsungs are good because they come with built in freesync.

60
After I have realized what is breaking performance and how to avoid it I managed to get stable 60 fps EVEN inside station ports.
Details in video description.
GTX 2070s with most settings on ultra / shadows on high, 2560x1080p resolution, SMAA, no SS,

Idk what a GTX 2070 is, but if you mean RTX 2070, considering that those GPU's can easily keep 120-144 FPS in 1080p ultra in Horizons (no sweat), it should absolutely be able to reach 100+ in Odyssey as well. If it's not possible atm without extreme graphics settings tweaks, then the game code is garbage, simple as that. :)

Yeah, RTX.
And I am not arguing that game is not broken : the whole point of my post is that game engine sometimes does not recover from fps drop when you set gfx too high for some demanding locatien even if you change them back again, so you have to learn what setting are no-go and never turn them on.

It's the only way to have a stable experience in OD current broken state.

I need to get a new CPU.

During foot fights (hehe) I suffer from a CPU bottleneck. My frames do not go over 30 and my GPU is bored

low framerate impacts input latency more than motion artifacts. That's why games always "improve" with framerates that sound insane or are even higher than the monitor refresh rate.

30fps - you might as well not be playing a real time twitch style game like this unless your gameplay never involves another npc / player / anything interactive.

I've got a serious problem somewhere in my setup. Exactly the same in Alpha, I was hoping for a step change. 4-5 FPS in the menus, lag bad enough that you can hardly move around the menu and I have to click 2-3 times to select an option. This on machine performing well driving 4K screen and Oculus in Horizons:
i7-7700, 16GB RAM, GTX1080
Comparing this to the experience of people with similar rigs, there is something fundamental in my system which is breaking Odyssey. Any and all suggestions welcome!

that does sound odd! i have an i7 860 (yes its older than old), 16Gb, gtx970 and i have 30-60 in most situations with High settings, except when on foot at sites pretty much, which is about the same as in Horizon really (non-vr ofc)

wanna trade ur setup for my antique one? ;) dont mean to make fun of you, but do u have to restart the game to see a change in FPS when changing gfx settings as i do?

Did you clean up your custom Gfx settings as fdev suggested?

  • Resetting the game's graphics configuration files helps boost performance for some CMDRs. Backup then delete all files in this folder, which will reset all settings files to defaults: C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics (thanks /u/Pyran)

There was actually a really good video, and i wish i saved it because i cant find it, that a professional photographer put out that went into the details of FPS, and resolution.

Basically there are a lot of things that are factored in, screen size, resolution, distance from the screen, and refresh rate all play a part in it.
One of them was like, if you have a screen thats only 7 inches big, and you are holding it like 3 feet from your face, your not going to notice differences in 1440p and 4k, its gonna be the same

EITHER WAY, to your point OP, acceptable in 30, thats not good, thats just acceptable. Ideal in 45 min, 60 standard, and anything above 70 is great, anything past 100 is epeen flexing, and anything above 120 is just super epeen flexing.

i did this, but at first noticed no difference, was still only very low FPS most times, but only some 30 minutes later hotfix 2 came and ever since my game have in a mysterious way been showing quite acceptable FPS for me most the time, with some exceptions (could not even try alpha...)
