Discussion What is the most efficient way to crowdsource the 3D system coordinates

I was reading through the gamma 2.0 patch notes, and noticed this one

"Fix galaxy map search not finding generated systems with authored names"

It might be related to some of our star name woes - we should take another look at some of these now with gamma 2.0

It also looks like they fixed the issues with not being able to search for "." or accented chars. \o/

I checked "Pantaa Cezisa" and it's still showing and searchable only as "George Pantazis", so they haven't fixed the backer system names at least.

The "." works fine, the diacritics sort of work. You can use alt+0225 to generate "á" but it also generates other characters as you type.

! - Got it :)

But

Still doesn't match what I find - Or I'm again missing something?

Code:
Name MBGammaList	Searchable	GM MBGammaList
Djali Yes No Herculis Sector QD-T B3-4	No
Siburuba Yes No Col 285 Sector BG-T b18-4	No
Hydrae Sector IW-W b1-0 No Yes (empty space) N/A
Crucis Sector IW-W b1-1 No Yes Paiphu Yes

Crucis Sector ER-V b2-0 No Yes Crucis Sector ER-V b2-0 No (seems fine)

And again - Why is it we are concerned about those not in MB's Gamma List?
Where do those name come from - An earlier list?

You can't find "Hydrae Sector IW-W b1-0" because I made a typo in the name. It was supposed to be "Hydrae Sector IR-W b1-0". Interesting that ...IW-W... takes you to empty space. "Hydrae Sector IR-W b1-0" does take you to "Crucis Sector ER-V b2-0" as promised though. Both that and "Crucis Sector IW-W b1-1" were added to TGC by JesusFreke. Hydrae Sector IR-W b1-0 I noticed because it came up in Athan's route planner. I didn't actually check if it was a reference system or not.

Hmm, the search function has changed. The galaxy map will now find multiple results. Type in "Crucis Sector BR-V b2-0" and it will take you to that system. Click the little arrow button next to the search and you can cycle through other systems:
Crucis Sector BR-V b2-0
Vucub Huan (also searchable as Crucis Sector BR-V b2-1)
Crucis Sector BR-V b2-2
Beronii (also searchable as Crucis Sector BR-V b2-3)
Lei Zi (also searchable as Crucis Sector BR-V b2-4)
Crucis Sector BR-V b2-5
then back to the first system.

Trying it with "Sol" gets you Sol->Solati->Solibamba->Sol->Sol->Altair->Anayol->Carcinus... and onwards. Very odd.

Are EDSC and systems.json basically the same data? Is it just a matter of synchronizing the two?

For example, HR 7721 is in EDSC but not in systems.json.

They haven't been synchronised yet. I plan to get it done in the next few days (have been too busy trading rare commodities, sorry). The systems provided by FD make up the bulk of both datasets but both have systems that are not in the other.

It searches for planet and station names now too. So for something like Altair - it's actually hitting on the "Solo Orbiter" station in that system.

I also stumbled upon a really strange bug in the new GM search. I was trying to search for Yin Sector GW-W C1-26. So I entered that, and pressed shift for the C, because that's the way I'm used to entering it (yes, I know it's wrong :)). And it didn't find it.

So I scratched my head a bit and went back to the nav panel and double-checked the name. Yep, Yin Sector GW-W C1-26. I selected it, and then looked at it again in the GM. Yep, there's the star, with the expected name.

Just for the heck of it, I tried re-entering the name, but without pressing shift while entering the C. *BAM*. It worked. Of course, it displays a capital C in both cases, but the code must be keeping track of the actual entered character. Although case doesn't always matter. For example, I tried entering same name but holding shift for YIN SECTOR as well (but not for c), and it still found the star. So it's only that little prefix char that is case sensitive for some reason.

Ticketed :)

Lol, I was actually at Solo Orbiter at the time and it never occurred to me even though I saw Michael mention that in a post. I even tried searching for planets in 1.05.

I didn't have time to grind the rares. Now that its nerfed I have to do it the hard way ;-(

Not that hard. Get a Cobra by doing missions, start exploring looking for a system that let you do a 1k profit an item inside the system, grind it until it feels slow. Its not that many hours until the type 6 is at hand and things snowball a bit.

Hi guys, can you confirm if this system coordinates are wrong: 12 Aquarii

Came up at a place where is not in game in my route planner.

Holy cow - That one is way off alright.

12 Aquarii:

MBs Gamma list says : [-57.0625, 57.03125, 68.8125]

GM looks like : [-295, -270, 303]

ugh... Dunno how to handle that one...

I saw another weird one last night..

I had previously submitted a star named "Core Sys Sector DL-Y d106", from gamma 1.0.*. I was searching for it, and it found a star named "Puppis Sector DL-Y d106". Either name will find that same star. Weird!

TornSoul, You might want to update the name of that system in the database, to reduce confusion, since the name is now shown in game using Puppis, not Core Sys.

re: 12 Aquarii:

There are actually two stars with the same name. I ran into this when trying to navigate through there. The galaxy search would bring up the wrong one every time.

Confirmed

The other one is the one from MBs Gamma list (correct coords) - Don't know why I didn't check the coords before...

So yeah - There's a 12 Aquarii

at both [-57.0625, 57.03125, 68.8125] (MBs Gamma list )
and
"Duplicate" : [-295, -270, 303] (GM map)

Duplicate names are *very very very* bad......

Done

Renamed
"Core Sys Sector DL-Y d106"
to
"Puppis Sector DL-Y d106"

Just removed the 'fake' one for now, hopefully will fetch from TGC the correct systems once you update it. Anyway, any news on the API for the the updated version?

Seeing as how things (systems) seems to keep changing (and there are still duplicates.... I can't stress how bad that is):

- Do we think this will stop after release?
- If so, should we ask MB for a release list
- and if we get it, should we start over? (like we did for gamma)

Well I've been holding off on this... But I've decided to wait until after release.
Reason being - I was coding the static data part of TGC for beta, and then "everything" changed for gamma (aka I could throw most of what I'd already coded away)

I don't *think* much if anything will change between gamma and release, but I'd rather not waste my time again tbh... Hence, I'm holding of until after release - There's (now) less than a week to go after all.

If you're renaming that one then you should probably rename the one I mentioned a couple of days ago as well: Hydrae Sector IR-W b1-0 -> Crucis Sector ER-V b2-0. And also Crucis Sector IW-W b1-1 -> Paiphu.

It's not just a duplicate name, it's a duplicate system. Same star types and both have alternate catelog ID of HD 200496 (though only one is listed as HIP 103981). This is a mistake in loading their real-life stars and should be ticketed.

Good questions.
- Post release I expect there will be minor changes but hopefully it'll be mostly stable.
- Given that the gamma reference list is not 100% I think we should ask for a new list.
- Whether we should start again, I'm not so sure. We didn't actually start again for gamma - I still have all the pre-gamma systems (both reference and crowd-sourced) in systems.json and I've verified that they are in the correct locations in gamma. I just haven't pushed them to TGC yet. But I'm not really willing to verify more than a couple of hundred systems for release and we're over that with just the crowd-sourced systems. Given that there isn't really a mechanism to remove or down-vote bad data in TGC I'd be inclined to start again, or at least reduce the CR to 0 for all existing systems. But I'm reluctant to throw out that much work...
