Elite / Frontier What other space games are there?

Heys ForkingL... Its been a looooong time. Its always good to see an old name in a new place, makes it that bit more homely. The Flux have been missing you... :)

While I wait for the next version of Elite (please let it be sooner rather than later), can someone suggest some good pc based space games, similar to elite.

I've tried Eve Online & Vendetta. Didn't like Eve as you have little control of the spaceship, especially when it comes to combat.

There are no games out there (offline at least) that match up to the sheer size and accuracy of the universe in Frontier. Also, Frontier is set in our universe, so you care more about what's going on. Frankly, I couldn't give a damn about some battle in a fictional universe! Doesn't Elite include a huge chunk (if not all) of the known Milky Way galaxy?

Either way, if the universe in Elite IV is the same size, or even a tiny bit smaller, it still makes the likes of X3 and Freelancer look tiny...

I was getting Elite and Frontier mixed up, the latter is the one with the huge universe. It came with a huge map, crammed with star systems. I can't be bothered to count them all, but it has to number in the hundreds!

I never actually played Elite or Frontier: First Encounters, I was introduced to Braben's games by Frontier. When Elite was released, my mark was games like Pac-Man and the like! I would've found Elite far too complicated. What did F:FE add to Frontier? And what is this GLFrontier I keep hearing about?

You can Google GLFrontier for more information, but in short it is a version of Frontier that has been reverse-engineered and modified to allow rendering using OpenGL and to run on much more modern hardware.

It has nothing to do with the company Frontier and we do not provide support, though there are plenty of friendly people here who answers questions that we don't :)

Rgr it will be an MMO. For offline and adhoc MP play I would recoment the Evochron Renegades game as something toplay while Elite4 simmers on the event horizon.

I don't know, it has drag in space and jumpgates in title. Plus it's MMO.

It also has that nasty 'painted space' feel to it. Still it doesn't look too horrible - unfortunately you never know till you get a feel for the game play, always a make or break in my opinion. I can forgive aesthetics if the game play pushes all the right buttons (pun intended).

I am sure that the Jumpgate Evolution game will have the gameplay ideal pretty much nailed. The predecessor Jumpgate certainly did/does even with the 2001 graphics that now have a 'retro' appeal.

This is a link to some pre-alpha gameplay preview taken at the codemasters event on the 14th of march - please excuse the shoddy camera work.

compared to the older JG;http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hBX8cq0BCdE you can see the improvements but tbh my camera doesnt do the new games look justice. Try this link for a look at a hi res teaser vid.

Graphics and games are always a divisive issue for us who played games on spectrums with wireframe ships and "starfield" screensaver backdrops and those who grew up with the snazziness of what we have now. Gameplay will always beat graphics imo, thats why I still log into JG 6 years after finding it.

LOL yeah we're a picky lot to be sure :D I blame Star Trek, B5 and BSG for all our lofty expectations :D

I watched the video and have to disagree. The game is butt-ugly. And I don't mean dated here. Frontier is dated, the first JG is butt ugly.

The second one, judging from official trailer, looks pretty nice, possibly due to not-so-subtle hints of Homeworld inspiration, but it's still not the kind of spacesim that pushes the right buttons and pulls the right strings to make me play it, especially given that space combat looks about as interesting and inspired as space combat sequences in UT2k4 Assault mode.

It will, but I do understand that graphics is of prime importance when it comes to attracting new players, and I don't mind it as long as it doesn't interfere with more important aspects.

To be honest, I think that what any game needs is the view points, experiences and wants of as many differing players as possible. So if you do have some kind of incling as to what you would like to see in a space sim worthy of Elite'esq heritage, be that just the space combat sim elements, or the living breathing multifaceted galaxy, pop on over to the Jumpgateevolution.com site, sign up for the beta, make a community account and simply state what your looking for in a game.

The more view points, the more perspectives the more real any galaxy will be.

Jumpgate is the only space sim i have played that has the "Dog Fighting" aspect i loved soo much from the orignal Elite, a "natural pilot" will give a seasoned Vet pilot a good run for his money anyday. JG has had my heart pounding with fear during battles something that i dont get very often playing other games, a game where you can actually dodge gunfire (well i cant because i'm not that good a pilot  ) and also buy your own station  (mine's called ForKy's) anyways go to www.jossh.com download the game and sign up for a 10 day free trial, be sure to have a good joystick.
