While I wait for the next version of Elite (please let it be sooner rather than later), can someone suggest some good pc based space games, similar to elite.
I've tried Eve Online & Vendetta. Didn't like Eve as you have little control of the spaceship, especially when it comes to combat.
No, but our solar system, quite a few stars nearby and some well known ones further away are included.Doesn't Elite include a huge chunk (if not all) of the known Milky Way galaxy?
That'll be Frontier, not EliteNo, but our solar system, quite a few stars nearby and some well known ones further away are included.
Even a single solar system in Frontier makes those look tiny. And Frontier had how many? 10^11?Either way, if the universe in Elite IV is the same size, or even a tiny bit smaller, it still makes the likes of X3 and Freelancer look tiny...
I don't know, it has drag in space and jumpgates in title. Plus it's MMO.Furthering my citation of Jumpgate Evolution as an forthcoming spacegame of note, I went to the codemasters connect08 event on 14th the vids of what I saw for this space combat game can be seen at http://www.jumpgate.co.uk

Graphics and games are always a divisive issue for us who played games on spectrums with wireframe ships and "starfield" screensaver backdrops and those who grew up with the snazziness of what we have now. Gameplay will always beat graphics imo, thats why I still log into JG 6 years after finding it.
I watched the video and have to disagree. The game is butt-ugly. And I don't mean dated here. Frontier is dated, the first JG is butt ugly. The predecessor Jumpgate certainly did/does even with the 2001 graphics that now have a 'retro' appeal.
It will, but I do understand that graphics is of prime importance when it comes to attracting new players, and I don't mind it as long as it doesn't interfere with more important aspects.Gameplay will always beat graphics imo, thats why I still log into JG 6 years after finding it.

The second one, judging from official trailer, looks pretty nice, possibly due to not-so-subtle hints of Homeworld inspiration, but it's still not the kind of spacesim that pushes the right buttons and pulls the right strings to make me play it, especially given that space combat looks about as interesting and inspired as space combat sequences in UT2k4 Assault mode.
