What ships do you have and why?

My stable:

1) FAS: I am primarily a combat focused player. For me, the FAS is the funnest, and most reliable combat ship around. It's the FAS's flight characteristics that do it, but it's funky, angular shape doesn't hurt my eyes either.

2) Fer de Lance: This is an awesome combat ship, but I just don;t fly it well. I get in it, and fly it regularly in an attempt to bring it under control but, it is having it's way with me. This is my challenge ship. It challenges me to get better and not be over confident.

3) Python: I can see no better Mission runner/BGS Raider that the Python. It can haul enough to be effective, while still being defensible. It comes on at the top for it's fire power, Module count, and most importantly, it can access medium sized landing pads, not excluding it from missions for it's size.

4) Cobra Mk III: First, because it's just the classic Elite ship. It is capable, agile, and small. I did keep one around as a place to keep mods and weapons as a storage hull but, it has found service as a ship to jump around in for no other reason that to just fly it.

All of them!

I mess around with outfitting a lot and try different things with different ships, especially if the ship isn't supposed to be good at whatever that activity is.

Spaceships Spaceships Spaceships!

For my main:

Sidewinder - used as a marker for something that isn't relevant any longer, just can't be bothered selling it.
Hauler - used as a taxi at sometime, forgot to sell it.
Eagle - Freebie from FD barely used
IEagle - similar deal
Viper Mk IV - ditto
Cobra Mk III - was my first ship (in a kind of 'Ship of Theseus' way), gets the occasional dust off
Asp X - exploration/ bubble runabout.
2x Clippers - both were bargains due to various CG rewards, currently mothballed but may well get some use when we get passenger missions.
FDS - for reasons (one of which was being extremely discounted)
Python - main mission runner/ hauler ( was bought same time as FDS for an amazing discount - Founder's discount +LYR discount + 33% discount for CG reward that should have only applied to modules)
Courier - just because, anyway it was in the same sale as one of the Clippers

My alt hasn't been going that long so just a Sidey and an Adder. Though this may change sometime soon

Man, people are loving this thread. I'm going to have to go back through and read each post...

Eagle (Wespe) - Pursuit/Air Superiority
Eagle (Helena) - Surface Attack
Viper III - Interceptor (Currently Unused)
Cobra III - Interceptor
Cobra IV - Mission Runner/Workhorse
Cobra IV - Kinetic Tank
Cobra IV - Pirate
DBS (Corvus) - Recon
DBS (The Hound) - Surface Attack
Asp Explorer - Kinetic Tank/Exploration (Currently used only for module storage)
Python (Reconquista) - Command Ship/Mining/Transport

When we finally get some combat/military missions that call for a Dropship, I'll buy a Dropship.

I'm changing mine...

Viper III (Jinete) - Pursuit (This thing is insane! It might be even more fun than the Eagle.)

167 Zorgon D-fitted Haulers - as bookmarks, from the days before FD managed to include bookmarks.
3 FDL - one fitted for multi cannons, one fitted with frags, one fitted for exploration / dropping SRV (with 28LY range)
3 Vultures - one fitted for nothing but wake scanning with 33LY range (because great cockpit and turn-rate, 8KM scan range), one fitted with multi cannons, one with frags.
2 Orcas - both fitted for 50LY range as bubble taxis for when I get sick of sitting in that fugly DBX cockpit.
2 ASPx - both fitted for engineering support and boom data missions and the likes (not currently exploring, so the second one got repurposed for now)
1 Dolphin - was really a test if its useful for anything - but looks like a Korean commuter bus - its just sitting holding engineered spare parts.
2 Python - fitted for range and mission grinding / trade mission grinding - sitting in different locations.
2 Anaconda - one being constantly improved for exploration, the other fitted for local passenger transport
2 Corvettes - one with PA setup, the other with Multicannon setup. Might need to set one up with dumb-fire missiles soon...
2 Cutters - one with mining setup, one with trading setup, called "Trader Joe's". I have yet to try the lazy HazRez setup with all turrets and massively boosted shields. Since I hate mining and I only bought the mining cutter for Selene Jean's annoying requirements, and its all A rated anyway, I'll use that for the combat test, when I get time. Watching old Star Trek reruns while my Cutter kills stuff with minimal involvement from me would just rule!
3 Imperial Eagles - they are just wonderful
1 Clipper - haven't really found a role for it, in spite of its nice speed - large landing pad kills it for a lot of things, just like the Orca...
10 or so Cobra MKIII's parked near engineers as local helpers.
1 imperial Courier - good speed, decent range - yet I tend to use a DBX instead most of the time.
8 DBX - 3 for actual use, fitted for 60LY, 5 as cheap storage for engineered parts.
1 Adder - just because no fleet would be complete without it.

And this morning, I got a FIRST TRY 50% FSD roll on one of the Cobra MKIIIs - only to accidentally remove it about an hour later, when the selection went one slot too far down - as I wanted to remove a Thruster mod, that was making it hard to gauge what I was rolling on the engineering screen. BEWARE!

And damn using the Cobra to drop SRVs - even on almost perfectly flat surfaces, its hard to drive out from under it!

Interesting to look back...

My Fleet... because I can,
All are fully a kitted and engineered to lvl 5.

Ooh, interesting stuff!

I have one of everything as I'm a bit of a collector (in RL) and wanted them all, because swag.

I have half a dozen a-rated ships I use regularly.

1 x Type-7 - Was my recent hauler, then passenger ship. I semi-retired her for a passenger equiped Anaconda.. also now retired
1 x Type-9 - This is my heavy duty miner. I love mining. She's a whale, and I love everything about her. Brilliant, awful, wonderful thing.
1 x FDL - A recent build. She's been gathering dust but everything I read said it's a great combat vessel, so I built that exact thing. A strange ship to fly, but that huge mount is hilarious.
1 x Cutter - A combat build; slidey fun. Quite lethal despite being a bit of a tank to use, but so fast that in reality, more effective than I'd have thought.
1 x Corvette - My "go to" combat vessel. Brilliant.
2 x Anaconda - The only ship I (Currently) have 2 of. One is my first "of the big three" and combat oriented. She's a-rated and all-pulse. A great ship and so flexible. I may re-task her. The second I bought for passengers... lotsa seats. I prefer passengers to cargo, but recent long-haul nerfs have made it a tough sell.. so I fitted out a...
1 x Beluga - Figured if I can't get a lot on board, I'd go Business and get the VIPs instead. I haven't used her in anger yet, but she's pretty!
1 x Dolphin - One of my first ships, and one that got me a long way through Trade (Passengers again) without realising. Just doing sightseeing and multi-hop missions is so much fun and relaxing.
1 x Courier - My first proper combat ship. Cheap an fast as hell. I still use her regularly for hopping about rather than shooty stuff as she's so manouverable.
1 x Imperial Eagle - Like the Courier, but a stock a-rated ship (no engineering) and still fast, so if I have just spent some time in a large-pad ship, I'll use the Eagle to hit medium stations to hand in missions or bounties
1 x DBX - 55LY range, so my really really really long range needs are covered here
1 x ASP X - I use this for everything. Exploration, prospecting, or running between systems. A great view, a great ship. Built for lightness and jump distance (50LY).
1 x Cobra MK 3 - I recently revisted this as it was my first ship. I clearly had no idea how to play as she had a smattering of B and C rated modules, but I uprated her for a giggle. I'd forgotten what a wonderful vessel it is.
1 x Sidewinder - I never had one. I don't know why, so I outfitted one for a laugh. So I sometimes use it for no reason but for the "why not" of it.

I'm slowly working through the others to find the diamonds in the rough or to have specific builds for whatever reason I can find. If and when FDev allow loadouts, I can see it being even more fun to switch ships, pick a loadout, and off you go. But for now, I guess it'll be multiple hulls instead!

Anaconda: For multipurpose stuff. Cargo hauling, passenger missions, anything really. Also my home ship.

Python: Also multipurpose. Also because it's a beautiful ship.

Viper 4: I think I did some bounty hunting with is earlier in the game.

Cobra 3: No need to explain here I think. It's THE ship. Love makes me keep it forever.

Cobra 4: Because I can.

Fer-de-Lance: For bounty hunting, also because of the sound... (no PvPer here).

Keelback: Not really sure. I made it a rescue ship with all sorts of limpets for helping others, but the limited jumprange isn't very useful for this purpose.

Sidewinder: I helped some friends getting into the game, and to give good advice I thought it's a good idea to sit in the exact same ship (the basic Sidewinder even struggles with gravity at 1G when turned on the side. Didn't know that before I tried).

Asp Explorer: The ship I fly most actually. This is my trusty explorer and ship for any endeavor that does not include hauling stuff or people. I have two of those actually, one stationed in the Pleiades and equipped with research stuff, the other one outfitted for traveling long distances and do other stuff. I love the handling, the versatility, the jumprange, the cockpit. Everything really except the WW2 bomber sound.

Federal Gunship/Dropship/Assault Ship: Bought all of them after the CG that removed the rank requirement and left them sitting at Jameson Memorial. I don't like any of the superpowers, but actually love the Federal ship design.

Diamondback Explorer: I tried around with it for exploration stuff.

Vulture: Did some bounty hunting with it.

Eagle: That one is a leftover from when I started to play. Never sold it.

T-10 Defender: I just love that bulky space tank. The way it feels, handles, how the thrusters blind me when I reduce speed... I really don't care about the whole debate about it. It's an awesome ship in my opinion.

I don't own any Imperial ship because I dislike the design.

iEagle : To mess about with.
iCourier: Data delivery missions.
DBx: Fast travel in the bubble.
ASPx: Exploration.
Python: CG missions requiring medium pad.
iClipper: General workhorse and material gatherer.
T-9: Trader.
T-10: Miner.
Anaconda: Multi-purpose.
iCutter: Trader.
Corvette: Never been in hyperspace. Feels like I am piloting on ironing board in space, straight back into the station gathering dust.

Generally I don't sell my ships. So I still own everything I ever bought.

Sidewinder - I was born in this ship. ;) Earned money for Hauler.
Hauler - Earned money for Cobra.
Cobra MkIII - Earned money for A/D-rated Dolphin.
Dolphin - My first explorer, served me during my first trip into the black. Earned money for A/D-rated AspX and much more.
AspX - Current ship, used for exploring (99% my activity in the game), will most likely be my ship for months/years unless something really exploration-focused appears in the shipyards. Earned so much money so far that I no longer do anything ingame for credits (even though I'm kinda poor comparing to most Cmdrs here). :)

I Currently own -

Sidewinder
First ship. Kept for sentimental reasons.

Eagle (mercenary edition)
Very low mileage - collectors item.

Imp Courier
Small and fast. Mission runner and mid-range reconnaisance.

Imp Eagle
Experimental stealth platform.

Dolphin
Experimental.

AspX
First medium ship. Rares trader and explorer.
Under various names and guises has flown through all four quadrants of the galaxy.

Fer de lance
Experimental combat platform.

Python
Mid size multi role bubble jumper.

Anaconda
Large size multi role bubble jumper.

Don't have the rank for the other two, getting there slowly.
Noteworthy ones I've owned and used and sold (you know, for economic reasons)
Adder, Cobra mkIII, Cobra mkIV, Viper mkIV Vulture, DBX, Type 6, Type 7, Imp Clipper.

My fleet so far:

Viper Mk. III
Red paintjob
Bought it some time ago as a personal taxi. Later figured it may be good entry combat learning ship. Right now she lays gutted and unused, collecting dust.

Adder
default paintjob due to lack of one that I like
My latest purchase. Originally destined to replace Viper in taxi duty, turned into full time small scale trading ship. Also - nostalgia as it was my first bought ship after Sidewinder.

Diamondback Explorer
default paintjob due to lack of one that I like
My first real target and "to get" ship. Browsing different ships I immediately fall into DBX. Available early, looks great, can trade with and has excellent jump range. My first exploration ship, now fast and short-medium range runner.

Asp Explorer
White with red stripes painjob
Second on my "to get" list, reason I unlocked Alioth. Designed for long range and serious exploration - got me to Sag*A and back in one piece.

Python
White red paintjob
Somewhat unexpected and unplanned purchase. Had Asp, just came back from the core and bought Anaconda since I had enough for that. After about a week of flying her and feeling bit disappointed I just bought a Python. Immediately it turned into my main ship. Currently set up for trading, my every day ship.

Anaconda
White red paintjob
Top of the list between those that does not require rank. Ever elusive goal that would take forever to get. Got her far earlier than expected and turned into cargo whale, being used when I find some lucrative route with Python. I have plans to visit Beagle Point this year and Anaconda is a strong candidate for such a trip.

Next planned purchase:
Chieftain. I tried combat in Vulture once - failed due to lack of skill and general knowledge. Tried combat with Viper - failed due to ship's lack of performance. Will try Combat with Chieftain - 3rd time the charm, right? If not, I'll have another trader in my stock...

i have an utterly ridiculous amount of ships - but almost all of my flying is done in either a Python or a Vulture. also have a 50Ly DBX for fast travelling long distances, a Cobra 3 lurking around too.

whenever i amass enough cash i blow it all on something new with the aim of keeping myself hovering just above the poverty line (i.e. the rebuy amount) - for me the game's more exciting when one false move or bad accident could make things desperate, while scratching to buy that next module or load of cargo

i'd love a way to invest or spend that wasn't outright wastage, i.e. to be able to buy shares in a station or help fund development of a new ship etc. - but at the same time i can't bring myself to blow all my $ on ship transfers to Colonia or such with nothing to show for it afterwards

at last count i had about 10 Anacondas, 4 Cutters and 3 Corvettes plus a wealth of other stuff but i'd happily sell it all off if i could sponsor a base or cap ship instead.

Asp X (retired)
Diamondback Explorer (my main flying around the bubble , exploration ship)
Anaconda (somewhere, can't remember where exactly that is)
Python (main day to day ship)
Currently grinding for a Corvette and once I finish that I will need to go and find out where my SOUL ended up.

Cutter for trading
Anaconda for exploring
Type-10 for mining
Python for medium pad activities
Courier for close system mission running

Ok so...

Hauler - My 35ly Bubble Taxi
Chrome Eagle - Bought due to the free paint job only lol (had it shipped to Colonia)
iEagle - Just because it's pretty
Cobra MkIII with Onionhead Livery. Lives in Maia for some reason.
Cobra MkIV - Bought for completion but don't fly it
DBX - My 50+ LY Explorer
Dulphin - My Luxury Passenger Barge in Colonia
iCourier - Speed Demon
Keelback - Coffin I left out in Colonia. I hope it's rusting away.
Vulture - Fully A rated engineered beast of a ship complete with Chrome Livery. Lives in Colonia
AspX - Old faithful, stealth passenger mission's best friend.
iClipper - Was My Mining Ship - Outfitted for passengers at the moment (Lives at Founder's with all my iShips)
Python - Lives in Wu Guinagi, was my best buddy for rep grinding.
Orca - My Luxury Passenger Barge in the Bubble
FDL - My Fully Modded/A Rated Battle Ship in the Bubble
Anaconda - Lives in Colonia - D rated but engineered to A spec (except the FSD of course) Used it for my trip to Sag A with a fighter on board :D
iCutter - Trade Barge with Teeth, nuff said.
Corvette - All Teeth, grrrr.

I think that's the full fleet.
