What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Deadly, But very fluffy...
Xbox controllers make me want to turn green and smash. I know they have all the buttons a 12-fingered person might ever need, but my hand isn't shaped like an octopus.

I see the manual docking a bit like the space shuttles on the NASA channel...slowly...slow...slower....almost...left a bit....slow......and......contact! Have a cookie.

lol well i have an Xbox so am use to it....... and if only i had a cookie for every manual station dock....that would be five then! :p...thank god for docking computers!

I took delivery of one of these earlier this week.

Had a bit of a mare getting it to work on my Win 7 laptop (i5) but it's up and running on my old Vista machine with Oolite - finding it much easier to fight with than the keyboard or mouse.

Will be getting a new machine for the game though..

Well I gave up trying on the laptop but I've just got a brand new bit of kit - early yes - but it suits other requirements I have - and it installed in a couple of mins no probs on Win 8 (yes I know).

So I now have some wizzy shiny new kit to practise on!

Umm - wooohoo :D

You really need to think about how many buttons will you need in flight? You will need flight controls to be able to point your ship in the right direction, speed controls, lasers / main weapons, missiles (possibly more than one kind?), ecm and scanner as the basic set. But then you have stuff like escape pods, cargo jettison, communications (how do you declare piracy etc is it via a button press?), mines and no doubt a load of other stuff I can't remember. Certainly the dev's can be seen using xbox360 controllers but remember that they are doing that in the pre-alpha stage where you maybe only have rudimentary weapons and controls.

That said the Xbox controller has 4 face buttons, 2 triggers and 2 shoulder buttons and 2 joysticks so there are quite a few buttons and combinations of buttons available. It will be interesting to see how the lucky blighters who could afford Alpha get on!

Will let you know! :D..............nothing in stone yet and willing to try a few things, i can use an Xbox controller, but not quickly!

Agree so many button options, gonna be tricky remembering them all!

Boom

I only need one button, and it's red.

You forgot 4-way D-Pad, and clickable sticks... I also use the 'Start' and 'Back' buttons in some games. For example, with TIE Fighter, I use 'Start' to match speed with target, and 'Back' for full throttle.

You could also use xpadder to fully customise it, with even more combinations.. the mind would boggle and brain melt methinks.

64k times the square root of Pi, expressed as a function of sine...

Hmm. I have less brains than I have fingers, so that's right out for me then.

I'll be trying out a joystick. But I'll also be using one of these (plus keyboard shortcuts):

I thought about mentioning the start / back buttons but they often just get used for pausing or game menu type stuff but I guess one of them would be ideal for the scanner button?

These days I've got a Cyborg Fly - Flight stick which has plenty of programmable buttons. and looks pretty cool too.

The only niggle is there's a pin holding it together which works it's way loose after a while, so if you're not vigilant and push it back in every few days or so, the whole thing drops to bits. (I had to send mine back for replacement, and the newer one does it too)

I'm quite happy with a combination of keyboard and joystick. Like others, I've never got on well with the x-box controller.

Watching a video about the Xbox One controller, it was interesting to note that competitive gamers do apparently tend to use the wired version of the Xbox 360 controller, because on the latency thing. The new controller will have an optional USB cable, so you can choose whether you want wireless or wired, rather than having to buy them separately.

I use GlovePIE, which probably has similar functionality, but a less friendly interface.

Yeah. Something useful along those lines would make sense, seeing as you can't pause anyway if you're online.

I'm hoping all controls can be mapped in-game. That way people can assign functions to all buttons on all (exotic) types of controllers, including start and select buttons.

Well my Warthog is delayed as the supplier shipped it without the throttle so the place im buying from are saying wait....

The throttle is SOOOOOO good on these I really hope Elite supports that throttle axis control.. :D

My kit is slowly coming together...

:D

Damn, HOTAS is a serious bit of kit. Jealous? Hell yeah! :D

Indeed, the mapping stuff is really more useful for older games. Xbox controllers don't work well with DosBox, in my experience, as you can't set a deadzone. I also needed it for playing Freespace 2.

It would be good if the in-game mapping allowed for combos though, otherwise I still might use an external program, as it's quite useful for games with tons of features. For instance, with TIE Fighter, you can map the D-pad for tracking targets by default, but also for shield/laser management when you hold Y, and for opening various screens (map/targeting/etc) when you hold B.

I'm hoping to find some sort of usb device I can map an incoming missile alert to so it repeatedly punches me in the nuts till I activate the ECM.

Have a tendency to get carried away in battle and hit it too late...

Regarding the mapping of keys to joysticks / joy-pads:

  • You might be able to remap controller movements to keys from within ED. TBD
  • If your brand of controller is from a reputable company it may come with software that allows you to map keys to a controller movement

One from within the game - one from within Windows.

I intend to play with the keyboard and mouse, but now I know that the Xbox 360 joystick controller is PC compatible, so I probably will try. I read that this controller is very easy to install and is fully compatible with most games, both on the console and on the PC. Someone here, know if it is possible to play simultaneously with keyboard, mouse and joystick?

Joystick for flying and fighting and keyboard / mouse for all the rest?

:)
