What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

so for those of you going to invest in an saitek x52 but are finding it out of stock, or if you are thinking of investing in a HOTAS, you may want to hold off a little while.

Saitek are about to launch a new stick to possibly replace the X52, the x55 Mach. Not alot of info out there just a promo vid, but looks like a similar handle to the one used by most other manufacturers and their x65f model that is based on the F16 and A10 etc

Saitek X55Mach promo.

Saitek apparently visited Star Citizen hq a few months ago, so hopefully this will be made with space sims in mind.
Unbelievable...

I've just spaffed a load of cash on a "new" X52 pro via Ebay, and Saitek do this.

The only thing that is stopping me from getting the x65 are the reviews that says the software let's it down. For a company that has been around for 20+ years making joysticks you would think that they would be fairly good by now.

I'll be joining the legions of keyboard-and-mouse players out there to begin with. However, following EliteMeet, where I tried joysticks, Track IR and the Oculus Rift, I'll probably be changing my control scheme after not too long.

I'll be hooking up my Saitek X52 Hotas that I use for DCS World. :) Plenty of buttons, sliders and profiles to choose from. Its personal preference but I love having the throttle seperate from the stick.

Looking at the post above me here. TrackIR is fantastic provided you can get it set up perfectly for you. I think it really adds to the experience in any game or sim where you have 6DOF in a cockpit. It even works really well with Arma but the downside is you either have to wear a silly hat or you look like a Borg.

I have several different kinds of gaming mice, different types of controllers and joysticks that I can try. At the moment, I think I'll prefer a joystick for the accuracy, but only time will tell.

Ill be using an Xbox 360 controller as per the devs, also seen the devs for SC and X using them so figure it will be universal and cant be too bad button wise for space sims.

I would have used my PS3 controller but cant stand the idea of motionjoy software :(

Ive an old MS joystick with force feedback which I'll test to see how that handles things before maybe upgrading it, but I hate the dead zones that arrive on joysticks even though I'd prefer to use one with E: D

If your stick is USB and in good nick then you should have no problem selling on fleabay. You cant use the MS software to set FFB levels if you use Win7 however it will work just fine.

After weighing up the options, I think I'm going with Keyboard + Xbox 360 controller.. and we will see how things go from there. Some of those joysticks look really nice, but I'm not sure if I can justify that much money on a joystick.

well x52 pros are going for quite decent cash due to the fact they are now hard to come by, you could always do a quick turn around if you really wanted before the other one gets more attention. If you are not in any rush like me it may be better to hang on.

There is no guarantee the new stick will be better though I mean it didnt show a throttle in the vid for example. :)

I am most likley going for a warthog though so it would have to be some stick to beat the Thrustmaster.

I (like others) bought an X52 on eBay, but due to lack of space I've yet to use it. Hoping to solve that particular issue in about a month with a log cabin as office space, so expect to be ready for alpha. :)

And of course, there is that German game out on Friday to give it a try with...

If I don't like it, it'll end up back on eBay and I'll stick to the Xbox 360 controller.

Are we supposed to use commercial controllers? I thought that was the reason that Mr. Braben released the Raspberry Pi, so that we could add a video sync separator from intersil to our HDMI video stream and lock on to the enemy ships automatically using a Raspberry Pi USB controller as a USB peripheral. That's what all of those GPIO connection pins are for. The Raspberry Pi HDMI out connector is clearly there for his own custom overlay on the game interface.

Since there is so little difference between the two models it makes me wonder why you would ever bother to buy the non-pro model.

For the sake of a few quid, I agree. It's still quite expensive for a controller though.

Apparently to improve the vanilla X52, in the Pro version they doubled the number of hall-effect sensors in the stick to improve accuracy, improved the spring tension system, Improved the display thingy on the throttle base, changed a lot of the components to metal, generally beefed up the stick, and made all the blinken lights fully customisable.

And made it blacker. :)

Just watching a used one on Ebay at the moment- currently way over the cost of a new one with half an hour still to go. Bidding frenzy madness! :D

I ordered the Saitek Cyborg X 5 PC Flight Joystick. It had arrived yesterday afternoon and I have just unboxed it today, I made video of this and had to stop rolling it as I had problems putting the thing together once I got it out of it's packaging.

For starters the f the stick that has to fitted to the base doesn't have enough leverage to give much purchase once I had tried to insert it.

In the instruction manual there is mention of a screw (Connected to the base where you insert the stick) that needs to be tightened, but it doesn't appear to get any tighter when adjusting it and so the stick is just sitting there in base will just keep popping out of it's socket anytime I move the stick.

There's also a type of Alan-Key for tightening another screw. I'm reading up on this now.

It's just too fiddley and should have come all in one piece instead forcing me to put it together.

This just reinforces my attitude that the joysticks of today as good as the ones they had twenty years earlier.

Does anybody have the same joystick and are all Saitek joysticks like this?

Can anybody assist me here?

EDIT

I seem to have sorted out the stick-in-base insertion with correct application and screwing of the Alan-Key at the base.

It now won't pop back out of it's socket and seems to be very sturdily fixed at the base.

Now I have plugged it in to the USB port on my Acer - Laptop and it made noise indicating that it was found and started to install itself.

It does mention in the instruction manual that you need to follow instructions on the installation wizard that pops up on the screen when it's connected.

No, this didn't happen exactly and now I'm having problems finding Game Controllers on the Control Panel under the Start/Settings menu.

What's going on with this?

Things were never this complex in the C64 days.

This joystick is designed with portable gaming in mind, which is why it came as 2 pieces. I agree that as I don't want to move it about, a single piece affair would have worked better, but once it's fitted together it's sturdy enough (I've had to tighten the locking ring once post-assembly when it got a little loose after some hard use).

From memory, you need to go to the Saitek website to download the configuration tool for the joystick, it didn't come as a disc in the box. What you do get is a generic driver set for the stick via your OS - which is probably what you noticed when you first plugged it in.
