What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Also looks like I forgot to actually address the OP ^^.

So, er.

Mouse, keyboard, lcd monitor, headphones. That's about it as far as my interfacing devices go. Well, maybe add a microphone. But no joysticks or oculii planned here.

I'd been using the Xbox360 gamepad for playing Oolite, but there's too few buttons to map everything. So I've ordered a Stinky Gaming Footboard for additional functions.

I might go for a next generation gamepad if there's good drivers for them. The XBOne gamepad is supposed to be nice, and that touchpad on the Playstation 4 gamepad could prove useful.

personally I really hope that everything can be used via the Windows XBOX controller, it already has 16 separate buttons. and using say the LB as a shift button increases everything to 30 buttons.

I want to be able to sit in front of my TV in a slouching position not having to worry about keys.

It's not whether a particular type of control device is supported that's an issue IMO, it's which form of control works for the game. I have connected joysticks (and even a racing wheel for a laugh) to games that were primarily designed for mouse and keyboard and found it can put you at a serious disadvantage to not use the default/expected devices sometimes.

I hope FD impliment a fully configurable system that allows you to map analogue and digital devices as you see fit (pedals from wheel + joystick + keyboard or even all keyboard for examples).

Agreed, I would like to think that various options are available, as long as they keep it simple ill be happy. I think what made the original elite such a great game was its simplistic control scheme. this goes for every great game, if you can play it without having to worry about what button does what then you have over come the first obstacle, the player is immersed in the game and controlling the ship and other functions is not even thought of an issue,

but if you go down the complicated route with to many keys then in my eyes immersion is lost with the player fumbling with what keys do what.

Yeah, I am hoping there will be support for 'shift' type modifiers. It would work really well with a joystick for temporarily switching from fly-by-wire to Newtonian flight mechanics.

Well I'm probably in a vast minority here but I use a Logitech TrackMan Trackball. My only pc is a laptop and I bought the trackie for when I use the laptop away from a bench. Takes a bit of getting used to when flying, but now I really like it! I spent about 2hrs yesterday setting up my 360 controller to work with X3 only to turn around and ditch it in favour of the trackie again :D

Cheers,

Smithy

This. That's what I mean by waiting to see what the game supports. Yes, I could spend hundreds on various Saitek controllers & HUDs, but if half of them don't fit with the game, or you can't map visual displays to these extra HUD panels then what's the point? It needs a completely remappable system inside the game so you can point actions at any controller or system you have installed. And we don't know if they'll be able to - or have the time, to do that yet.

Excellent - finally got a bargain on Ebay. Didn't get the X52Pro in the end, the prices kept going for not much below retail price, so was pretty much resigned to getting one at full price. Instead I got a Saitek X65F joystick for the same price as a new X52Pro.
Its a bit strange to use, but very responsive at the most sensitive settings. At the least sensitive settings you need to put 6.3Kg of force on it which seems excessive. Strangely centering seems to be a bit of an issue at first play, although the weight of my hand on the stick is more of an issue - a bit of calibration in order I think. The throttle is also excessively stiff even on its lightest setting, so I'm not sure yet what to do about that.

If you've put the throttle at its lowest settings and its still stiff, you may need to change the grease, I know... stiff grease doesnt sound right does it but if i remember rightly that has also been reported on the X52Pro.

Thanks for info on the grease. I found a reply from Saitek about stiff throttle and the grease problem, all you need to do with warm it up or move the stick back and forwards for 30 sec. That seems to have worked for my stick (for now at least).

Full Quote:
Talked to Saitek about the stiffness of the throttle. It seems this is caused by the grease, in transit during the cold period we had the grease solidified.
There tech people advised me to move the throttle as fast as possible back and forward for 30 seconds, really put an effort into it. That seems to solve most of the problem for me. It also helped to put the stick in the sun so it heats up for a while.

For those that are interested, I had a go on Oolite with the X65F - little bit of setting up required for things like Yaw, but easy enough to do. Given I hadn't used a joystick for erm a couple of decades I don't think I did too badly. I managed to take off and land the ship again first time with out scraping the sides, although I think I aborted once. Combat didn't go quite so well mainly due to being out gunned and not having an ECM (or possibly not working out which button to press). At the lowest sensitivity, my ship was all over the place, very responsive. In the end I need to use higher force settings for cruising and delicate manoeuvres like docking (changing to different preset force settings can be done at any time by pressing a button on the controller).
I will say its strange for the stick not to move, which at the moment results in me wanting to put more force into the stick. On a plus point, it may well help build arm muscles. Also there are so many hats and buttons on the stick. When I try to use them at the moment is causing stick movement, so not ideal, so possibly I will use the ones on the throttle instead.

That's strange, I've often found waggling my stick back and forth tends to make it stiff.

I'm sorry, it had to be said.

Reminds me of all the joysticks in the 80's breaking due to one game - Summer Games
(I had a Competition Pro and used auto fire in the javelin and threw it well over 100 metres :D)

Microsoft force feedback 2 - it helped me bring terror to many jumpgate pilots , and it'll do the same again in Elite Dangerous muhahahahhahaha :D

I have a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals, TrackIR, the whole nine yards, and while I love to use my Warthog in DCS A-10C and wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world, I do feel the stick is somewhat too stiff to be comfortable for an extended amount of time. I know there's this O-ring you can remove to reduce the stick's stiffness, but what I'll probably do is break out the XBox 360 controller, or buy a Thrustmaster T-16000M or something if that doesn't work out.

Still kinda hoping for TrackIR support, though. A lot of people in my ArmA-playing group of internet pals would go bonkers if Elite had it.
