What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

started out with an xbox 360 wireless controller. Quite relaxing sitting on the sofa but found it didn't quite have enough buttons unless you use combo/toggles. Switched back to a 10 yr old Cyborg Evo Joystick which is working quite well in combination with number pad. Tempted to get myself an X52 standard model for xmas but have reservations over Saitek quality. Started to get some drift/sticking on my Evo but was able to sort it by pulling apart and putting in some Parktool bike grease....

I'm using my trusty Steelseries mosue and keyboard combo. Having tried both an xbox controller and a Thrustmaster joystick, I prefer my old setup.

This "joystick or keyboard/mouse" question is my biggest problem of my (gaming) life... :( :D

For me, mouse aim has always been more accurate and better over than joystick. Games (as ED) requiring precision aim and "micro-movement" means mouse for me. Sad, because i really would like to use hotas. :(

It's all about anatomy I think. Wrist can't be faster (and more coordinated) than fingers. Sry for my english btw. :D

Wow I think I might stick to m+kb. I just reinstalled my Ch fighterstick, throttle and pedals and I have ZERO aiming precision. With the mouse i can pinpoint targets from 2k+ away but with the joystick it's impossible.

Granted I haven't used my HOTAS in years but I think even if I were well experienced right now I still wouldn't have the precision a mouse affords. I've been using m+kb in other games for geez 20 years or more now so the muscle memory and hand-eye coordination with them is vastly superior.

Luckily this game doesn't require a HOTAS the way a flight sim does. I've tried m+kb in flight sims and it's a disaster.

Wanna sell your CH throttle? :D

I am using the CH Fighterstick + Keyboard on my gaming PC with excellent results...I love the Fighterstick.

I use KB + Mouse on the laptop.

Both solutions work great with ED. Cheers.

Folks,

What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous? Joystick? What brand? Just using a keyboard?

Keyboard and mouse for me. I've tried a couple HOTAS with Elite and it just doesn't feel right. I've also tried an XBox 360 controller which is better, but I can definitely aim faster and track ships easier with the mouse/keyboard combo.

Hi there,
Can you please tell me where to buy CH hotas in Cambridge or London?
I will stay there for a couple of days before I will came back in Italy (where they are almost impossible to find).
Thank you for your help.

I'm using an old saitek st290 pro and a mad catz r.a.t te. Yes that is a stick/mouse combo but it works for me.

Edit: Since this post I added voice attack. Getting used to talking to my computer, and it answering back. This covers the controls I simply didn't have enough buttons for previously so a good investment as far as I can tell.

Hi,

just got the Thrustmaster warthog and the saitek x55 side by side.

Im going with the x55 as I think it better suited for Elite Dangerous, will return warthog.

Pro Warthog:
build quality is amazing. feels like a real plane stick.
extra POV on Stick

Cons:
Stick resistance is too much. Checked Forums for Spring Mod but wasnt satisfied with the hassle and results.
Button resistance too much. needs very hard press to register. feels awkward.
Button placement on throttle awkward for me.

Pro x55:
easy to configure
dont mind that the switches dont toggle. works fine with ED.
throttle buttopns and PO| -- hats are easy to reach and operate
yaw on stick - tried everything with yaw and think that yaw on stick is best.
like the wheels on throttle
fire triggers have easy resistance

cons:
missing 4th pov on stick
1 or 2 real tooggle switches on throttle
throttle resistance could be even lighter

I would be awesome if Thrustmatser would add yaw on stic and two thumb pov on throttle.
right now there is no high quality joystick for space sims. the 55 is the best compromise for me. lets see what star citiyen comes up with for a space sim joystick.

cheers
bubba
