What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

You know the spring on my new joystick and other like it.

I think it's just for show, as it doesn't look as though this spring even serves purpose as the stick moves independently of it.

The springs aren't for show on those sticks. They provide tension as you push the stick to the edges. As you push the stick a plate must rise up at the bottom of the stick as it slides along the outer wall of the sticks base. That plate pushes against the spring creating the resistance that grows stronger the further from the centre the stick goes.

I can feel that tension as I used it to play some Oolite and think it may be better without it.

I'm using a 15 year old MS SideWinder 3DPro Plus which I got on ebay for about 15EUR shipped. I've built a gameport -> USB converter, so it works with any modern game.

I remember seeing an X52 video review where the reviewer held the stick horizontally to show that it's so light that it will actually move considerably from it's own weight. That's when I decided that it's not for me.

I'm also thinking of building myself some kind of ED themed gamepad, and I will probably get into that once I know what the in-game keyboard controls will look like.
Have been seriously considering that myself, probably using a teensy or arduino micro.
Never used one before, but have tinkered with electronics, and I don't think it would be too hard.

Got a Cyborg V.1 stick when WC Saga finally came out. It suffices if used with a keyboard (although I do miss the tension and force feedback provided by the ones we had in the 90's), but for Oculus Rift I'll definitely need a bigger, better one.

And I also have a Cyborg V.2 pad (well, a model with the old Ps 2700 name to be precise) which frankly doesn't see much use on my PC; only for fighting games (rarely as I play them) and sometimes platformers. I honestly prefer keyboard + mouse for (most) action adventures, (most) action RPGs and (most) racing games, and for all other genres using anything else is a laughable idea to begin with.

I've seen that video too but I went and bought a brand new X52 (non-pro) last week anyway.
This is one of the first things I checked. Mine moved a couple of millimetres but that was it so I assumed the video was from a well used X52. I saw a fix for it on some forum somewhere anway.
Can't compare it to any other joysticks made nowadays (its my first one since the 80's) but it does travel a lot which I wish was adjustable.

If you have a floppy one *cough* a floppy x52, you dirty minded peoples, the fix is very easy and doesn't require it to be opened up at all, basically inserting a plastic disk ( the bit from the top of a disk tube ) in between the spring and the base of the stick. There is also a fix to increase the sensitivity of the stick too, should anyone want to do that. It's a little more involved, open it up, move the magnets, test it, close it up.

possible saitek x55 renders

admittedly the vid only showed a stick, however ad states at end: 'advanced flight control system' which would suggest there is something else to it, eg a throttle.

The throttle in the link if genuine it reminds me of what I would imagine a sort of amalgam between throttles of x65f and a warthog - all be it with alot less switches and much smaller base than the warthog.

Did some looking about and apparently they where planning on pre-orders on the 20th nov, however, that has not materialised. They also apparently stated pre-holiday, so hopefully still time for people to take a look and maybe put on letter to santa!

I going to be building a Cockpit..
with G940's Flight systems, & Oculus Rift's..
plus. Jason Giddon's glass keyboards combos...

My aim is to have two High end Rigs.. with a dual Cockpit..
with.. at least 50" 3D TV's, & a pair of rifts.. & the G940.. Force Feedback systems..
along with.. the rift's I will be using.. Force Feedback headset....

Anyway I wont bore you's any longer,,, :)

I'd love to see a build log of this mate :)

That's nothing. My build features Michael Brookes himself whispering a description in my ear.

I have a MS siewinder precision pro flightstick which I can dust off OR an xbox 360 pad. I will try both. I just hope the game does not have dumbed down controls for KB and M like in say warthunder.

Becasue of all the flight aids war thunder adds in if you play arcade mode, it is actually far far easier to play with so everyone ends up using those even though it is less immersive.
Back in the day I put a lot of time into freelancer. A great game but pants controls (they worked ok but a total immersion killer.

I know some people (Total Biscuit are you reading! ;) ) think that every PC game must run on KB & M, but I say if you own a PC you are the enviable position of being able to use the right tools for the right job. You would not play R Factor on KB & M so why play a flight game?
sorry a bit of a ramble ;)

I have just bought a new CH setup specifically so I can start learning, so I'm ready for ED/SC.

Before getting the CH Setup, I had the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. I now have :

CH Fighterstick USB
CH Pro Throttle USB
CH Pedals USB

Love it!!!

I also bought the CH Fighterstick, Pro Throttle and pedals. I actually bought them to play SC but no longer intend to play that game. Fortunately, I can still use them in this game. I believe the software is one of the best and there are a ton of buttons. The Fighterstick is huge if you have small hands though. I actually prefer the throttle being flat and without an arch for fast adjustments.

Awesome setup!

But I will resist the urge to get one, I stick to my xbox 360 controller, it will feel cozy enough in the living room with the 55" screen TV :)

I love my setup, but the problem has been the three screens. I never considered it, but going to 3 is pretty heavy on your graphics card. I'm almost tempted to sell the three and go for a single, massive one with Track IR instead..

Very nice. I had my 1st introduction to 3 screen gaming the other month, my mate has a redbull F1 playseat and 3 screen setup. It is so much more immersive and also gives a big advantage in games with the extra peripheral vision. 3 screens though, esp star citizen (I take it that is the hanger module running?) is going to take some horsepower, possibly 780's in SLI if you want all eye candy.
