What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

People who buy gaming consoles buy them to play games specifically, so they're hardly "casual" gamers, while many people play games on PCs that were not bought for games.

I don’t see it that way, I look at casual players as people who play games from time to time with a relaxed easy going approach, what could be easier then turning on your console, it boots up in seconds, slapping in a game and then sitting back on a sofa with a controller in hand, looking at the TV in your living room. Their console has become part of their living room entertainment setup, which lets face it, is what consoles are aimed at, being wireless control with HDMI, being used from time to time, when other features of their entertainment centre is not in use.

Consoles are also used for other than games, I have friends who use their console’s to watch Netflix/LoveFilm, connect up a NAS network drive & use them as media player, with the new batch of consoles (Xbox One/Playstation 4), these media playing features have been emphasised even more.

As for a PC, it’s in a set place (even a laptop you have to get out & connect it to the power), in general not in a TV cabinet as part of someone’s living room entertainment setup & don’t kid yourself in thinking this game will run on your general office PC, if you don’t have a GPX chipset from one of the two big guns in PC graphics, this game will struggle, albeit, a low end games rig will suffice.

So there are a lot of PC gamers who play on PC and don't have things like gamepads and joysticks. Most PC games are perfectly playable with a keyboard and a mouse, so a casual gamer wouldn't expect that he has to buy a gamepad or joystick for a PC game in order to be able to play and enjoy it. Frontier should make sure it's possible to play the game comfortably with a mouse or forewarn potential buyers about the necessity of buying additional controls. If they don't, then they shouldn't be surprised when they get many negative reviews about uncomfortable controls from annoyed customers. A gamepad or a joystick shouldn't be required in order to enjoy a PC game, and playing with a mouse&kb should be a viable option.

Agreed & as I’ve mentioned already several times in this thread, many people are reporting good things with mouse usage in the alpha, so I think warning FD about mouse control is a non starter really.

Basically what I’ve been saying & others in this thread, is that you would get a better level of control with a joystick, of course at the end of the day it’s all down to preference. For instance I realise I’d have a better level of control using a driving wheel for a driving game, but would I buy one, no, I’d make do with my joypad, I’d be happy with that & I’d probably get pretty good with it. As is a steering wheel is the real world control mechanism for a car, as a joystick is for a jet fighter (flight model) & as I see a joypad, it’s been solely designed for gaming, so I look at it as a bit of a half-way house. The mouse was designed to be used for a computer’s GUI OS, although it is suitable for most games & looking to be as well with ED, it’s still my optimum controller when it comes to FPS games, I just can’t get with joypads for the likes of COD, like the youngsters today.

As for getting the same level of control with a mouse, then that is simply impossible, FD can’t reinvent the wheel, as Mike Evens a designer at FD, has already stipulated in this very thread:

I think the issue is that the flight model doesn't move as quickly (or quickly enough) as someone can move a mouse which is pretty much the normal way of doing things in space games. The slowness in motion (not response) is a flight model factor that just so happens to not feel bad when using a stick or game pad compared to a mouse where people are used to things moving as fast as or as close as makes no difference to their ability to move the mouse.

Greetings,

I have one of those in addition to my X52 Pro. Using the Flight5 with VoiceAttack works really well, the throttle control is really good - the only downside is it doesnt have as many buttons as the X52, thus the need to use VoiceAttack.

Kro.

I've seen that VoiceAttack in a youtube video. It looks like a lot of fun and I think its something I'll be getting when the beta premium becomes available. The only downside I can see is with anyone listening in another room might think think I'm nuts when they hear me :D

I pre bought the TH warthog, beautiful throttle and stick, got it installed in the pit and was going to have to wait till beta until I was going to be able to use it. FD then drops the bomb on us with allowing us to upgrade to alpha. Yay.

So after owning the TH warthog for about three weeks, two of which were testing Elite, the damn thing breaks.

So I'm now using and getting very used to using the good old mouse and keyboard.

The shop I bought the TH warthog from (overclockers) have now had the damn thing for longer than I've owned it.

Can't wait to get it back though.

It does feel good in use doesn't it. I'm not on Alpha so installed War Thunder to test out the joystick. This is why I soooooo hope that FD don't apply as many aids for keyboard and mouse players as are in War Thunder, as it has ruined that game. You cannot compete with keyboard and mouse players in that game.

Exactly this. Support, yes indeed but a full blown flight stick (which I don't actually own) really needs to be the optimal solution, just like a serious racing game must never allow so many pad assists that a pad is more effective than a wheel.

I've done a deal with a couple of places where I have had kit that has broken, just to make sure I get it back as soon as possible. The last case was a Das Keyboard. Some of the keys stopped working and they said it could take a week or two to send to Germany to be fixed. I suggested that I just buy another one and then they refund me once they get the broken one back. It might be worth a shot.

the damn thing breaks.

Exactly my experience with every joystick ever. It's 360 controller for me until I'm convinced I need something else.

Wow so glad I've tread this thread back some, voice attack looks like it may be an amazing control system augmentation technology. fire missile, deploy ecm, engage witchspace, transfer power to <x>. No more worries that an Oculus Rift will disengage one from the keyboard.

Same here :)

I just got myself Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog, and the Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals. Although I've only scratched the surface of DCS:A10C, I can't wait to try them out in ED .

Same for me :) Christmas should be here on Wednesday when the UPS guys shows up.

I used to use my old Logitech Attack 3 for combat in x3tc so when I got the Tflight Hotas X I thought id try it out in X3. wow once I got it programmed in it was so easy and the deadzone is easily configurable. Could not get the front rocker on the throttle side recognised but was no biggy. I reckon with this stick and voice attack I may last a whole 5 mins in ED now ;)

Sorry this may have been answered already, but there are too many posts in this thread to read.

Has any compared using a joystick to using a mouse in the alpha?

I have a Logitec Attack 3 and I was hoping it would be better than using a mouse for dog fighting.

I am currently playing 'World of War Planes' and the mouse is better than a joystick in that game. I hope playing with a joystick in ED is at least equal to using a mouse, as I want to use the joystick as part of the game immersion.

joy or not-so joy-stick

I've tried with both (bought the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick specifically for ED) and unfortunately think the mouse is better.

However (a big however), I am still experimenting and finding setting up (on ED side) very messy :(

Thanks for the reply :)

I will use my JS anyway but I was hoping I would not be murdered by NPCs too easily :(

I have tried both and found a HOTAS joystick to be far supperior.

I found mouse and keyboard very tricky. Joystick and voice attack is the way to go in my opinion. (And Occulus Rift when it's out!)

very happy with my Logitech Extreme 3D. love the looks & heavy base. all the button i can handle. though ideally a 2nd hat mini-stick to have power management & thrusts right there...

I will use my new saitek x-55.
It arrived yesterday.
Too bad Elite alpha do not detect the stick and throttle unit correctly.

well, tried with a mouse first, was a disaster. Then tried with a simple stick and the keyboard, and was too slow for multiplayer combat.
Today a box from amazon arrived, containing a warthog HOTAS, and another smaller box containing trackIR5. Can't wait for the weekend to arrive to test :D

As I've mentioned a few times I WANT the x52 but can't (we're REALLY on a budget in this house now) so for my birthday I got an XBox controller. It didn't really work out well for me. Then my seven month old baby broke it and I went back to the keyboard.

So I'm on the keyboard.
