What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

I think it could have possibilities as an extra to "do stuff" but the keyboard and mouse is still the best way to interface with the PC. Unless the Leap Motion is used to manipulate actual holographic objects!! See the latest edition of Channel 5's Gadget Show for that one...

Cant wait for holograms to become the norm.

Brian :)

I will be getting what ever HOTAS logitech product is available on release.

I played all the FreeSpace games on an original MS Sidewinder. Unfortunately you don't get Midi ports on newer PC's and the drivers probably won't work in Windows 7...

I had (have?) a MIDI to USB converter somewhere for my Sidewinder but drivers, like you say, are likely to be an issue... That said, there's some weird stuff out there that Win7 copes with surprisingly well without modding...

That Leap Motion device looks really sweet. I wonder how well it would work? I'm not going to be the person to test it but if anyone gets it working with Elite Dangerous let us know.

Just returning to the original post...

Keyboard I think.
Joystick is unlikely to be quick enough for ship manoeuvring AND at the same time speed control, hyperspace, rear view, left and right view.
Well, Joystick users were in another camp in the 1980's - they barely docked at Zaonce!
Keyboard users went all the way...

Bananas

I've got one on pre-order, to see how well they work as kind of touch-screen alternative, so will be reporting on whether it's all hype or not. I don't think it would work as the main controller, but it may well be brilliant for interfacing with the star-map.

y'all can keep your fancy tom cruise-like leapmotion + super-expen$ive force-feedback joysticks.

i won't be using k/bd + mouse alone, but i will be using my trusty logitech ATK3 joystick. it might be an old design but it's got a heavy + wide base, has enough buttons on it that i really don't need to use the k/bd whilst flying in oolite + fits well in both left + right hand.

and it was cheap! :p

I can't resist posting this. I will be using the Saitek X65F, the one that was used in Red Dwarf X as the controller in the engine room. I got the stick straight of the set when they finished with it but it was missing a part.

A couple of weeks later the Prop master found it and sent it to me, plugged it all together and it works perfectly. Hey hey.

Mouse / keyboard or Joystick

Well, I was thinking about mouse and keyboard. I usually use them for FPS , but not sure how good that will be with Elite. So it is looking like a joystick for me.

I have funds allocated for the Saitek X52 Pro but have been reading all the blurb about the HOTAS Warthog. I am not sure I can justify £280 on a Joystick, My better half would string me up if she found out, £112 for the X52 Pro is a lot easier to Justify.

But to say I am tempted is an understatement, I am concerned the HOTAS would be too high on my desk.

HELP.... STOP TEMPTING ME WITH THESE EVIL MONEY EATERS!!!

please... I am WAITING until next Feb before I will make my mind up, but Saitek have beautiful controllers.. BUT will these be workable with Elite ED?

I was hoping the flight sim panels may be adapted to ED too, a little horizon level meter would be handy for landing on a planet.. and a digital display for the radar....

Been thinking about this a bit and I'll likely try the 360 controller first. If it doesn't feel right though the next option may be a dedicated joystick like this:

That looks fantastic - love the throttle on the side! My current stick is a Cyborg Evo, but the throttle is on the front so it's a bit awkward. Definitely gonna have a look at that stick. :)

Twin throttle as well - just the ticket if you want to control separate engines, or things like trim etc (in earth based sims of course). ;)

I should think Saitek's should be compatible, looking at the software you can customise the mappings, so it should be fine.

I am going to move the allocated funds for my X52 Pro in to a separate account i think. You are right in that ED is still a long way off and there is plenty of time to save up.

If I save up enough for a HOTAS Warthog, nothing says I have to spend it all on that joystick, I could still buy an X52 Pro if I decide the Warthog is overkill.

I would be interested to know if anyone reading this has a HOTAS warthog and how they have it mounted on their desk or whatever. Is there a height issue in relation to seating position?

So to summarize a couple of threads into one:

"Now that they've announced they are considering consoles for the future, they better not dumb it down for consoles dammit!! I want to play it on a PC like its supposed to be played!! ....with my Xbox controller!"

Having testing my spanking new x52 pro, it really is a revelation. Hooked on oolite again when I was getting v frustrated with using my 360 controller on it and lack of Deadzone setting in the game on windows.

Curious what the HOTAS Warthog offers that the Saitek doesn't?
