What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Pansies! with your top hats and egg yolks on your joysticks
I'll be using the one true hardcore joystick

The ultimate in comfort and control (according to the box).

Hated this one LINK
I used to go through micro switches like a teenage goes through cleanex :)

I think I also had one of these LINK but that could have just been a fever dream.

I will probably start with the mouse and keyboard, and then plug in my Saitek Cyborg EVO joystick. I *might* Give my Competition Pro USB a go though. I wish I had a Atari/USB converter so I could use my TAC-2 on it...

I am also working on a little project that utilises FreeTrack TrackIR system for head movements, I hope E: D will support it. Basically a slightly modified cheap webcam, opensource software and a headset-mounted 3-point model with IR-LEDs.

Been thinking about this a bit and I'll likely try the 360 controller first. If it doesn't feel right though the next option may be a dedicated joystick like this:

I already have that one. I'll see how it is, but while it works well, I don't have the fine proportional control that I would like with this stick. Part of it is that there is an amount of play in the grip and mechanism that makes precise adjustments difficult.

Maybe something like a Thrustmaster that behaves like a combat yoke in modern fighter jets (the name of which escapes me right now), or a stick that is more solidly constructed might serve me well.

May I suggest getting an ipac or similar keyboard encoding device. That way, you can design your own controls. Its digital as well which is good.

woof woof!

No frills, you had to hold them in your hand, and they had no centering mechanism if I remember rightly, but they were the best joystick I ever had.

Am thinking of going down the road of a PS/Xbox style controller for E: D if there is a bluetooth version.

My biggest problem with joysticks is that I get excited and they tend to tip over. Even ones I've used with suction cups on the bottom tend to come off the table top and become unusable.

Same here, hence I will probably go with a smallish handheld solution

Deadly, But very fluffy...
I'm old school enough to try playing keyboard only. Crazy I know! :)

Crazy Dude!!!:p......actually not really, think i will try the same! i got good just using keyboard on org Elite....

Not to say i wont go for a joystick at some point(gonna let everyone try them out when game has been released, and theres bound to be a poll to see which controller is best after that ;)

I used a joystick for the original elite on my old Amstrad 25 years ago - there was no mouse available. When I played Freelancer on PC ten years ago I was surprised how easy it was to play with keyboard and mouse. What you need will be dictated by what hardware the game is designed around. There will be folk who just want to play it on a laptop.

Joysticks can give you an edge but I won't be going out and investing in any extra hardware until I've tried it in the beta test.

I'm surprised and relieved to see how many people are saying keyboard. I thought I'd be the only one! That's how I grew up playing games... and I haven't spent any real time playing any games, other than the three in the Elite series, since the early 90s.

I might however invest in some sort of controller at some point for Elite Dangerous.

Always used keyboard for Elite/Oolite. As I plan to play from the sofa via the big telly, I plan to use a PS2/Xbox style controller if I can program the Elite keyboard keys to the buttons, stick etc.

Maybe these are a compromise:

I would adjust to a PS3/XBox-type controller if I had to, but I would prefer having the option to play using mouse and keyboard as I always have.

It's primarily a PC game, if they don't have an option for Mouse + Keyboard there's going to be a lot of angry gamers.

I know its not a controller, but I'm sorting myself out with a Triplehead2go so that I can surround myself in spacey Elite goodness!

Brian :)

Triplehead2go is irrelevant (and supports tiny resolutions) given you can do triple-head off a single mid-range ATI card, or even a modestly spec'd NVidia.

Got rid of mine years ago for an ATI 5850, and upgraded to GF680.

Don't waste the money on the TH2Go, just spend the same money on a better card and get triple-headed out of the box!

Gamepad for me, every time. I can't play games with mouse and keyboard anymore. Apart from the kitchen table, I don't own a single flat surface I can run a mouse on enough for gaming.

Here you go Brian, more goodies for your spacey goodness, some elite monitor mountingness. http://www.amazon.co.uk/MDM06-Triple-Monitor-Stand-swivel/dp/B001H2XEP8

I have a massive six monitor stand in my ebay watch list. That way I'll be able to mount the five that I have pkus have room for another later on.

Brian :)

P.s. I now run a pair of GTX680's and a GTX580 in my rig, so no triplehead2go needed any more. Thanks for the advice :)

Cool, very nice. if you do get it, you may well need to reinforce the desk mounting point. a friend of mine used one similar and when it broke the desk and fell off it wrote off 3 monitors and damaged another one. A VERY expensive lesson.

Pretty much set on starting with Mouse/Keyboard combo at first to see how I get on, but would be happy to try out a joystick especially after seeing some of the ones in this thread.
